Short trip w/ 2 year old & fire at Radio City!

Decided to take a mini- weekend in NYC when I found a deal at the Grand Hyatt for $143 per night on a Sunday night in December. The night before %26amp; the night after were $500. We have been to NYC many times but wanted to bring our 2 year old grandson to see Santa %26amp; the Christmas Spectacular.

Drove up from MD %26amp; stayed in NJ on Sat night. Drove into the city on Sunday morning. Was a relatively easy drive %26amp; came right into the Grand Hyatt. Of course we couldn%26#39;t check in right away because they were sold out ';on both sides'; as they said. Stood in a very long line to check our bags but finally found a bellman who took our bags for us.

We then went to explore Grand Central Terminal. Even though we had visited the city many times, we had never been here before. We loved it! Went to the transit museum %26amp; had some lunch at Junior%26#39;s before looking around the Christmas fair. Since our room was still not ready we decided to split up - daughter %26amp; husband went shopping %26amp; my husband %26amp; I stayed with grandson. We walked up to Bryant Park %26amp; looked around the Christmas fair there, watched the skaters %26amp; grandson rode on the carousel. By the time we got back, our rooms were ready (exactly 3 pm). Rooms were very nice %26amp; beds were comfortable. I was a little worried because of some of the reviews - but I am picky %26amp; I found the rooms perfectly fine. Went to see Christmas Tree at Rock Center that night - got pictures taken in front of it that we ordered online %26amp; then took grandson to see Santa at Macys. Line was long but went very fast. He wasn%26#39;t so sure that he wanted to see Santa but got a cute picture with him anyway.

Daughter %26amp; husband got up early on Monday to go to Regis %26amp; Kelly. Husband, grandson %26amp; I went to breakfast at Pershing Square. A beautiful restaurant %26amp; good food. By then it was time for us to head back to the hotel to gather up our bags to be checked so we could head up to Radio City. We had just settled in our seats %26amp; I was feeling particularly emotional because I remembered seeing the show with our daughter when she was young %26amp; now here I was with our grandson. Well so much for those feelings because all of the sudden, everyone was grabbing their coats %26amp; running out the fire exits. Seems there was a fire in a closet. We had to stand in the Plaza for an hour %26amp; wait for them to check out the building. Well back to our seats %26amp; the show. Grandson enjoyed it but got a little restless toward the end. After the show we tried to eat at the Rock Center Cafe but the line was ridiculously long. So grabbed a bite at John%26#39;s Pizza %26amp; then headed back to collect our bags %26amp; head home. Unfortunately we ran into some bad traffic on 78 in NJ %26amp; it took us 8 hours to get home. It was a nightmare - only thing we could do was laugh!.

All in all a good but short trip. Will be heading back in the Spring with about 5 busses of teachers for a girl%26#39;s weekend.

Thanks to all the posters for some great advice %26amp; happy new year to all!

Thanks for the short but sweet report. Glad the fire didn%26#39;t cause a meltdown for the day, or your grandson. It sounds like a lovely weekend getaway to the big city. Happy New Year!
