Unfortunately, there are so many restaurants in NYC that this is impossible to answer unless you say 1) what neighborhood do you want to be in, 2) what kind of cuisine do you like, and 3) what price restaurant will you consider?

please help

Put the words

in the search box and many posts on this topic will come up. Even the Christmas Eve discussions have good ideas.

Also, check out the ';sticky'; post at the top of this forum about Holiday Dining.

You%26#39;re going to have to do some digging, and probably pay a lot of money.

Here%26#39;s some ideas:

http://www.scruffyduffys.com/

lol you sound desperate, i know how you feel.

The area around times square will be an impasse until after midnight, then it clears out pretty quickly and the bars start to fill up even more. Why not try Stout on 33rd between 6th ave and 7th ave (closer to 7th). You should either arrive early or call them to make sure it%26#39;s open to the public(on the off chance that it could be closed for a private party). After midnight it will fill up with the times square revellers making their way down towards Penn station to go home to Long Island, so either it will become a lot of fun or too crowded, depending on how you like your bars. Also this is not a bad walk home to your hotel when Times Square will be navigable again:

http://www.stoutnyc.com/

Also there are a bunch of bars in that area where you could manage a pub crawl if Stout is no good. Nearby is Mustang Harrys, Mustang Sallys both further down 7th ave, or heading back towards 5th ave there%26#39;s a couple more old irish pubs, one being Jack Demseys, and another next door to Stout, but both are a bit grimy compared to the others i mentioned.

Someone else here has mentioned booking at Ruby Foos if you like Asian food. That sounded like a good idea.

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k385304-鈥?/a>

Obviously also depends on how old you are, how much you want to spend, what sort of vibe.

I think Danny%26#39;s and Swing 46 are also good ideas although I haven%26#39;t eaten at either. The street they%26#39;re on, 46 st b/w 8th %26amp; 9th is restaurant row, one place after another. Lattanzi and Orso are really nice Italian rest. on that street. There is a place called Don%26#39;t Tell Mama, a piano bar, also on that street. Fun.

I just went to www.Opentable.com and entered an ';example'; of Sat., Dec 31 for 5 people at 6 pm. I also clicked on ';New Year%26#39;s Celebrations';. Got dozens of options!

Are there any Baseball Batting ranges in NYC?

Will be in NYC in June to see the Sox vs Yankees series and would love to try this out. We don麓t have any here in Sweden. I think they are called batting ranges. Any one know if there are any in NYC?

Thanks!

Do dvds of Broadway performances exist?

I took the girls to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang last week and they loved it, so they want a copy of the performance but I can only find the sound track and the D*ck Van Dyke movie online. Does such a video exist?

(Ha! TA made me change Mr Van Dykes name because it is profain! Tee Hee!)

Do dvds of Broadway performances exist?

no they don%26#39;t; at least legal ones

Do dvds of Broadway performances exist?

The library at Lincoln Center maintains an archival collection of Broadway videos, but they%26#39;re only available for students to view on site. I used the service once to get a ';rerun'; of a particular show I loved, and I was sorely disappointed. The archive video is shot with a single camera, and performances that were spellbinding on stage were diminished to a flat, boring presentation.

When you see a taped performance of a live show, as you%26#39;ll see sometimes on PBS, it is specially produced for video. That is, there are several cameras and it%26#39;s edited for the screen. Even then, it often bears little resemblance to the original. Two favorites of mine -- ';Nicholas Nickleby'; and ';Death of a Salesman'; (the underrated but spectacular version with Dustin Hoffman and John Malkovich!), were brilliant on stage but boring on television.

What makes a performance so vibrant is the fact that it%26#39;s live. Hold onto the memories!

Thanks guys, I guess I%26#39;ll go for the soundtrack and let them use their imaginations to fill in the blanks : )

New Year's Eve Times Square restaurant with teenager..where...

Me and my 4 friends want to find a nice restaurant to reserve on Dec 31a anytime between 6 and 10 pm. We have a teenager with us. We know that most restaurants have the one price all you can eat and drink special. We want to be in the middle of the Times Sqaure action also. Can anyone suggest a resturant or hotel in the area?

Don%26#39;t you think all restaurants in the Times Sq area are already booked solid by now? The ball drops in about 38 hours.

Renaissance New York

DoubleTree Guest Suites

Marriott Marquis

TGI Fridays

Bubba Gump

Sbarro Pizza

Olive Garden

Foley%26#39;s Fish House

I%26#39;d get out of Times Square and head to the Village, the East Village, Soho or the Meatpacking District. Better for teens.

Disappointed at Asia de Cuba

This is for anyone who is planning to go to this restaurant....don%26#39;t!

I went with my boyfriend on Xmas Eve, our first night in New York, did not enjoy it at all....service rushed and anonymous interior design.

The food was the worst aspect though....asian fusion cuisine is fine. I like it and have had it many times. However, the flavours have to be balanced correctly and here they weren%26#39;t. Who puts black cod miso with a deep fried pepper and mint flavoured beans????!

We both felt sick after eating here...save your money!

Disappointed at Asia de Cuba

I didn%26#39;t have as strong a reaction as you did, but Asia de Cuba is not one of my favorites.

Disappointed at Asia de Cuba

Sorry you didn%26#39;t like it, but thanks for warning the rest of us! Much appreciated, and very interesting.

I know it seems like a strong reaction but it honestly was not a great experience - we have been to the branches in both London and San Fran and San Fran was the definite winner: it had a slightly better menu and a great atmosphere...

I would highly recommend Kittichai if you like satisfying and delicately flavoured asian cuisine though....

Looking for somewhere in WNY to take wife overnight for her...

My wife%26#39;s birthday is next month. We live near Rochester. I%26#39;d like to take her somewhere, either a hotel or B%26amp;B, with suitably romantic rooms. It doesn%26#39;t have to feel like a Turkish harem or anything, just not too sterile (a fireplace or jacuzzi would be nice). I%26#39;d also like it to be reasonably close to a good restaurant, and preferably within a 2 hour drive from Rochester. Any ideas or recommendations are appreciated.

Looking for somewhere in WNY to take wife overnight for her...

Try the Belhurst Castle (great dining) or Geneva on the Lake. We have never stayed at Geneva on the Lake, but I have heard it is lovely.

Looking for somewhere in WNY to take wife overnight for her...

Glenora on west side of Seneca Lake is great...rooms are romantic and the food is also good. It will put you right in the middle of wine country which is a plus. Also Seneca Shores on east side of Seneca Lake is a nice B%26amp;B - nice rooms. I haven%26#39;t tried Esperanza Mansion on Keuka Lake, but it looks great too. I%26#39;m sure Belhurst and Geneva on the Lake are both nice too, but there is something about being further down the lake that feels more romantic to me.

Hi, was just wondering if a photo drivers licence is recognisable and exceptable in N.Y for proof of age for entering bars/clubs etc, as i was worried about taking my passport with me!

    Photo I.D

You may need your passport to back up your out of country drivers license.

i always keep my passport with me when traveling, safer than trying to hide it in a hotel room, thieves know all the %26#39;secret%26#39; spots.

    Good luck.

As stated, you will need your passport for ID and should always carry it with you. Make a copy of the main page and place the copy somewhere else in the unlikely chance that you lose your passport.

    BAG question

    Hello,

Are there any BA greeters on this forum?

I have applied for a BAG. We%26#39;re coming to NY in April. When can we expect to know if we are gone get someone or not?

What can we expect from a BAG? I didn%26#39;t ask to visit a particular neighborhood. What places do they take people to?

    Thanks!

    BAG question

    Hi:

I am a greeter, and I can tell you that sometimes you hear right away, or sometimes you can hear right before your trip.

We take people to specific areas if requested, sometimes we just show newcomers the ropes, ie: using the subways %26amp; buses, just making people comfortable in order for their experience in the city to be better.

Some are Central Part experts, some are Harlem experts, some do Greenwich Village, I do Brooklyn, basically, but will do parts of lower Manhattan, too. Some go to Queens or the Bronx, it all depends. Generally, we try to take people to less ';touristy'; areas to get a better feel for the real NY. You don%26#39;t need us to visit a museum of to up the top of the ESB.

In any event, it is a great, free service, that has expanded to other cities, such as Chicago %26amp; Melbourne %26amp; Adelaide, Australia.

    BAG question

    thx for the info, NYCgirl!

Just curious, did anyone get a satellite radio for Christmas so they could continue to hear Howard Stern (and other commercial free programming) on the air?

    getting to NYC

Hi there! I am hoping someone out there can help me out, with what I assume is an easy question for any new yorker to answer!

I am going to be in NJ for one night (Morris Plains), then going into NYC (Times Square) for a few nights after.

I have looked at several websites (NJ Transit and PATH), and it seems there a so many options in getting to the city. What I am looking for is the best way to do it! I would like to avoid the bus, as I am not a big fan of bus rides, but I am very open to any other transportation.

Can someone please suggest the best way to get from one place to the other?

any other tips for a first timer in NYC would be appreciated!

    getting to NYC

I answered your question on this in the NJ forum. As I wrote there, there is a NJ Transit train station right in Morris Plains. There are no other options other than possibly bus which you don%26#39;t want. Or you can rent a car.

Subways do not run out to NJ. The PATH do not run out as far west as Morris Plains as their website www.pathrail.com shows.

    getting to NYC

I know you did, and thank you. I was just posting here to see if anyone else had any ideas.

    thank you again

you probably don%26#39;t realize that Morris Plains is quite is about 45 minutes by car from Manhattan

while most New Yorkers won%26#39;t have reason to go out to Morris Plains the reverse is more likely to be true since many people who live in NJ commute to Manhattan for work every day

Search this forum for the words ';first timer'; and you%26#39;ll see dozens of great threads on this topic!

    City Tours

My retired husband and myself will be visiting New York in April for the first time - for 4 days.

We would like to take some tours and also wanted to know if there were any tours to NY City from Long Island where we will be staying.

Would also like info on the best way to get to the tours etc.

    City Tours

I doubt there are since you generally have to get yourself into Manhattan to get onto the many many different tours. Also though, Long Island is a very huge place so please be more specific as to where you%26#39;ll be for better info.

    City Tours

From end to end, Long Island is 120 miles long. It includes four counties and a population of 7.4 million people, which is more than the population found in 39 of the 50 states. Thus, to say ';Long Island'; is rather like saying you are staying in ';Georgia';: it would be helpful to know what town you will be in!

Much of Long Island (and by the way, both Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island) is served by the Long Island Rail Road (yes, Rail Road is two words), which can take you into Manhattan easily and relatively cheaply. Most visitors staying on Long Island would travel into Manhattan and then visit according to their own itineraries.

I will not say that there is no such thing as a formal ';tour'; of New York City that originates in Nassau or Suffolk counties, but the idea strikes me as strange and uncommon.

There are dozens and dozens of tours. For general tours, Grayline hop on/off, NY Party Shuttle and Marvelouse Manhattan tours are some that people have enjoyed.

Bigonion.com is another co. that does more specialized tours that also get good reviews. The Municipal Art Society does some wonderful architecture/historical tours. There are also some great free tours--everything from the lower east side to Central Park, Wall St. and Central Park. So, tell us where you%26#39;re staying and what sort of tours you%26#39;d like to do. Also, be aware some of the free/specialized tours are only given on certain days/times.

Call the Super 8 hotel in North Bergen,NJ.Ask the name of the tour that goes into NYC and other places.Sorry forgot the name of the company. The bus picked us up in front of the hotel for all day tour. The tour included Central Park,Grand Central station, ferry ride to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island-got off bus 3 times to walk about.I believe it was $49 per person.Others on the bus were picked up at other hotels.Maybe this will help.

I don%26#39;t know about tours from Long Island, but there are plenty of tours available once you get into the city. The thing to be mindful of is weather conditions and your personal tolerance of discomfort. The sightseeing bus tours are terrific - but I wouldn%26#39;t do an open top bus this time of year (and the view from the lower deck of the double decker buses isn%26#39;t great.) Walking tours are also terrific- but think about how much you want to walk around if it%26#39;s really cold and windy. I would recommend a bus tour - but only from a coach bus, so you could see the sights and be warm and toasty at the same time. Have a great trip!

If you don%26#39;t want to walk, take the bus tours offered by Grayline or NY Party Shuttle. Good overview of Manhattan and other boroughs.

All other tours mentioned are walking tours.

    http://www.newyorkpartyshuttle.com/

    http://www.coachusa.com/newyorksightseeing/

As was mentioned, walking tours are plentiful and very interesting. They have a smaller focus on a neighborhood or theme - haunted places, radical activism, food and cuisines, women%26#39;s history, Broadway and theatre, etc.

Where on Long Island are you staying?

We are staying in Babylon and will probably leave daily for tours.

I highly recommend the Marvelous Manhattan Tour.

    kingofnyc.com/Marvelous_Manhattan_Tour_Optio鈥?/a>

This tour is a smaller group of about 26 and the tour guide is very outgoing, humorous and knowledgable about NYC history. You get a great overview of Manhattan, including UES and UWS and Harlem. He makes stops at various attractions for picture taking and closer looks. One of the best tours I%26#39;ve ever been on!

Here is a link to the Long Island Railroad schedule for Babylon to NYC. It takes anywhere from an hour to 1 1/2 for the trip depending on time of day. The train leaves you at Penn Station (34 st %26amp; 7th ave.) and many of the tours start in the Times Square area which is a short 10 minute walk from there. The station is very near Macy%26#39;s.

    Sorry, forgot the link!!

Things to do new the American Girl Store...

We are going to the American Girl Store (AGS)at 609 5th Ave. That is something for our 9 year old girl. Also going along are our 16 year old daughter and 9 year old son. What is in close vicinity of the AG store that could be of interest to the other two kids? Last time we spent time in the book store across the street from AGS and a little time at Saks, but that was just spending time and giving my teenager things to want at Saks that I had no intention of buying. Trying to avoid that this time.

    All thoughts appreciated....

    ---Paul

Things to do new the American Girl Store...

Rockefeller Center is right across the street. (Well across the street and 1/2 a block up.)

Things to do new the American Girl Store...

Your 9 year old son might enjoy the Nintendo World store nearby. It has a large Pokemon section and several game stations where he can play video games for free.

Maybe the others could go on the NBC Studio tour across the street. Or just a few blocks up on 5th Ave. is the NBA store.

This optical illusion on the cieling at 30 Rockefeller Plaza should kill about 15 minutes.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k325554-鈥?/a>

Ice skating at Rock. Ctr? Top of the Rock observation deck? H %26amp; M shopping (16 yr old)? Trump Tower up the street. Really, American Girl store is in the middle of everything on Fifth %26amp; 50th. It just depends on how comfortable you are with how far the other kids can go on their own if there%26#39;s not another adult. I%26#39;d say Top of the Rock or skating is the best idea.

My wife would be with my 9 year old daughter at AGS. I would be with our son and teenager.

Guess they have to put up with wherever I take them!

best resaurant for sisters birthday party

sry by accident i put this topic in the north creek forum for some reason...i dont know why..anyway:

Hi! my sister is turning 14 in Feb. and would like to take a group of her friends to a fun restaurant in the city...we live on long island and i think my dad might hire a limio to take her friend in and including our family..i dont know about the limo part yet..this is what i have in mind for resturant ideas and what she had agreed on so far:

    -planet hollywood

    -hard rock cafe

-mars 2112 (we were just there yesterday..liked the atmosphere but really didnt care for the food...or the 2+ hr. wait)

    -jekyll and hyde

she needs a fun place with a decent menu that her friends will have something they will like...b/c some of her friends are picky eaters..

i hope some1 can give me some other suggestions and some feedback on the restaurants i chose! thanks in advanced!

    Hi - I have a just-turned 15-year old daughter so maybe I can help out a bit...

Stay away from Jekyll %26amp; Hyde - when my daughter was 13 she thought this the stupidest place on the face of the earth ;-)

You%26#39;ve alreday come up with the answer for Mars 2112 - stay away!

There%26#39;s nothing wrong with either Hard Rock or Planet Hollywood - but I%26#39;ll bet the waits will be long.

I%26#39;d also recommend Ellen%26#39;s Stardust Diner, John%26#39;s Pizzeria or ESPN Zone as well as Virgil%26#39;s BBQ.

You should Google all of these to get a feel for them - Ellen%26#39;s has a singing waitstaff and they can sing Happy Birthday to your sister!

    Good luck with your search.

best resaurant for sisters birthday party

I%26#39;ll add Ruby Foo%26#39;s, it can be fun for young teens.

Another fun place is The Cowgirl Hall of Fame in the West Village at 519 Hudson St. Southweatern and Tex/Mex food in a funky hip atmosphere.

Thanks for all of the advice! i think more than likely shes going to be between hard rock and planet hollywood...we have been to hard rock plenty of times b/c we go to st. thomas every year and before it closed down last yr, we always made a stop to eat there...anyway i think she might want to try planet hollywood b/c she has never been there before..i have (not the one in the city but the one in washington d.c. on a class trip) but since i was on a class trip they limited the menu and i didnt like it...i kno the waiting time wont be long b/c i know she is inviting between 15-20ish people and every place you go to, they take reservations for large parties...if you had to choose between hard rock and planet hollywood, what would you choose? Thanks again!

Need help planning trip to Finger Lakes

My husband and I and 2 kids ages 9 and 11 will be in the Finger Lakes Region for 2 full days in July. I had wanted to stay in a cabin in a state park but they require a week%26#39;s stay. Any suggestions for simple, inexpensive lodging in the area? Also, in my research I%26#39;ve discovered there are so many state parks. Robert H. Treman, Cayuga Lake and Taughannock Falls state parks have caught my attention-which parks are must sees since we can%26#39;t possibly hit all of them?

Need help planning trip to Finger Lakes

I would suggest you use Watkins Glen as your base for a stay. The Seneca Lodge which is at the entrance to Watkins Glen State Park is ideal for your situation. www.senecalodge.com They have cabins for 45.00 per night that are rustic and clean. The whole Seneca Lodge complex has an odd charm that most people love. The restaurant and bar are excellent. Watkins Glen is the one must see state park in the region. The gorge is a wonderful hike and extremely beautiful and unique. You can walk into the park from the lodge. Great pool and picnic facilites. This will put you in the postion to hit both Keuka (20 minute drive) and Seneca Lake (5 minute drive) wineries easily. Consider a cruise on either lake. Take one early-evening and drive to Ithaca to see Cornell%26#39;s campus and catch dinner on the commons area downtown or up in college town area. Skip the other state parks unless you have time for Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca. Great diving board into swimming hole at the base of a beautiful waterfalls. Stop at Ithaca Brewing just before the park for a beer tasting. I saw your other posts. Dont skip Toronto. You will love it.

Need help planning trip to Finger Lakes

Watkins Glen is a nice village and would probably make a good base. It can%26#39;t hurt to check out Geneva also - the town has a bad rep but has cleaned up a lot lately and is very central to the area attractions. As for the parks Taughannock Falls is can%26#39;t miss. Absolutely beautiful. Also Keuka Lake is in my opinion the most unique of the lakes because of the branch shape. If you will be there on a Saturday check out the Windmill in Penn Yan - a great farmer%26#39;s market that the kids will like. They will probably also like the glass museum in Corning. I tend to think of wine when I think of the Finger Lakes, and that isn%26#39;t exactly kid appropriate, so I%26#39;m sorry but I can%26#39;t think of much else to reccommend. But definately don%26#39;t miss Taughannock Falls. I%26#39;ll think more about this and see if anything else comes to mind as far as must sees.

Thank you both for the info. I had done some research before checking in here and was also leaning towards Watkins Glen as well as the Seneca Lodge. It seems like there are lots of bed and breakfasts in the area which really aren%26#39;t our speed and lots of the smaller motels don%26#39;t have much info on their websites. We definitely don%26#39;t need fancy but no roach motels either! Thanks also for the info on the parks-the area looks absolutely beautiful.

Trip report - rather late and a bit long!

    Hi

Although I have tried desperately to keep this short it%26#39;s impossible - so apologies. Thanks to all who put so much info into this forum - we picked up on a lot of which helped make the trip special.

Day 1 we were up around half six so decided to take advantage of the early start to go up the ESB - got there around eight so didn%26#39;t really queue at all and had a gorgeous view at the top as it was a sunny clear morning. Headed back to the hotel to meet Helen, our Big Apple Greeter. This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip - she took us down to Greenwich Village and we saw the Meatpacking District, Little Italy, China Town, the World Trade Centre, Wall Street, NYU taking in parks and Doggy Spas not to mention Magnolia%26#39;s for cupcakes where the smell of the sugar is enough to give you a high! It was fabulous to see all this with someone who was so knowledgeable - she really personalised New York for us and gave us so many good tips.

For the remainder of that day stayed in the Wall Street / World Trade area wandering around. Did try Century 21 but it was so busy and confusing had to leave - definitely for the more dedicated shopper. That night back to China Town for dinner. Had a lovely meal in a place called East Village then went home via Times Square for an early night (so much fresh air in one day was a shock to us office worker types!!)

Monday did a bit of shopping - went to BH and round Macy%26#39;s - a few hours in Macy%26#39;s was barely long enough to scratch the surface! Had to pull ourselves away as although we could have stayed for a day it seemed like a waste when there was so much to see going on outside. So back to the hotel to drop the shopping off then went to the United Nations buildings. The tour was really interesting being able to see inside the actual chambers and the guide was really helpful. After the tour went to Grand Central Station which was stunning then decided we deserved a few drinks at the Oyster Bar (plus couldn%26#39;t face going back into the rain) so we spent a couple of hours people-watching and sampled some Long Island and Brooklyn beer (befor deciding I really do prefer wine). Decided we were too wet to go out for dinner and too late to go back to the hotel to get dry only to go out again so we got a salad and went back to the hotel and ate in the room in order to be bright and fresh for .....

RAIN! The Tuesday was wet again however we persevered despite spending a little time getting out of the hotel due to being stuck in the elevator for a while. We paid a visit to Filene%26#39;s Basement which someone had rightly recommended as a shopping treasure - smaller scale than Century 21. Went down to Pier 83 and got the Circle Line Cruise. Inside the boat was packed but as a true Scot I decided a little rain never hurt anyone so wiped down a couple of seats outside and had the best seats on the boat - we found a beer and hot dog helped guard against the cold and anyway the chattering teeth and soaked through clothes were worth it for the sights! Anyway there%26#39;s no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothes. The Cruise was great - our guide had lots of little gems of information over and above the sights. When the cruise was over we went back to Times Square and got tickets for Mama Mia that night. Got rid of our %26#39;wet chicken%26#39; look at the hotel then went to Da Nico%26#39;s in Little Italy for some fabulous pizza before heading back up to Broadway for the show. Which was brilliant!! Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

Wednesday was a beautiful clear crisp day so headed early to the Rockefeller building and went to Top of the Rock for a magnificent view. If I were to choose between the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Top of the Rock I%26#39;d probably say Top of the Rock was my favourite because for one thing you get a great view of the Empire State Building and a closer view of Central Park. But also because the staff there were so friendly and welcoming - you almost felt like a guest in their home (paying guest of course) - they had a much more polite way of organising the tourists to get them to the top. We then paid homage to Saks, Bloomingdales and Tiffany%26#39;s although didn%26#39;t put off too much time in any of them as time was running out. Went to St Patrick%26#39;s which was beautiful and then went to Central Park where we put our feet up on a horse-and-carriage ride. We meandered through the park over to the Dakota Building and then, as it was reaching the end of the afternoon and was such a beautiful day, took the subway to Brooklyn then walked back across the bridge for the sunset. The view was spectacular even though it was freezing by this point - worth the numbness. Remembered we needed a post office so ran around the area until we found the massive one near J and Rs which is a lovely building in itself. As it was our last night we treated ourselves to a Martini in the hotel bar and some champagne to round off the holiday which combined with the fresh freezing air to paint our cheeks a shocking shade of pink!

Thursday was last day so went out to find the best spot for Macy%26#39;s parade - we took a couple of subways and tried various spots before ending up on 40th round the corner from the hotel which turned out to be an ideal place to stop and view as the crowds weren%26#39;t too bad. Had lunch in a diner then reluctantly got the subway down to Howard Beach to get to JFK. Interesting journey down - we had a dancer, a magician, a slightly mad man and a dvd seller all going up and down the carriages so were glad we%26#39;d taken the train.

Short summary - brilliant trip, early trips to ESB and TOR recommended to avoid crowds, Circle Line Cruise definitely worthwhile, Mama Mia great for feel good sing-a-long, Big Apple Greeter FANTASTIC idea if you can, Hilton at Times Square was great for view from the room but every time you leave the hotel be prepared to hit chaos, Metro 7 day pass paid for itself over and over again and the people we met were friendly and helpful everywhere we went.

Thanks again to the contributors at this forum which I scanned daily for about a month before going and who provided help in the planning of our trip!

Trip report - rather late and a bit long!

    Great trip report!

I am very jealous of you trying out the cult cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery. I dragged my boyfriend along Bleecker Street only to get there and find that they were shut for the holidays!

    I could have cried!!! :(

Trip report - rather late and a bit long!

Enjoyed your report, sounds brilliant. Have to agree with you about Top of the Rock, lovely staff, much nicer experience than the ESB, but both are worthwhile and I do honestly think the ESB view is better, but the Top overall is better. I would do both!

I fondly remember my trip to Scotland a few years ago, I think the sun shone only one day. And I didn%26#39;t mind a bit. I like the way you put it though -- ';no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.'; Absolutely right!

I also agree totally about Top of the Rock vs. ESB. I wish the folks at ESB would take note. It would be so easy for them to make the experience nicer from start to finish.

And congratulations on your stamina and hardiness. The Brooklyn Bridge walk is worth a bit of a chill, isn%26#39;t it?!

This is a great report. Sounds like you packed plenty into your trip :)

Sorry you had so much rain but didn%26#39;t seem to stop you. ';there%26#39;s no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothes';--love it!

Thank you so much for posting this...I%26#39;m in the midst of planning our first trip to NYC in June and your account gave me some great information!

    Another shopping query

Going to be in NYC for five nights from Jan 24th. Having a debate with hubby as to whether a trip to the outlets is worthwhile. I%26#39;ve done a search on here and read the reviews of Woodbury v Jersey Gardens and still can%26#39;t decide.

I was in Woodbury in 2000 but it was a Christmas shopping trip so I wasn%26#39;t really looking for things for me. My main shopping problems are that I%26#39;m a US size 0/2 and take size 5 shoes. Sometimes outlets can be better for small sizes and sometimes a waste of time. Gap, Banana Republic and Nine West would be staple shops and these are in both outlets as well as downtown NYC. Any recent visitors with opinions as to whether it%26#39;s worth going out of town or if I should be okay given the old faithful downtown places.

    Another shopping query

    Hi,

I have the same measurements as you and I only shopped in Manhattan. I found that places like Barneys have lots of stuff in our sizes...its more expensive than the likes of Gap but with the sales it is possible to pick up a real bargain in brands like Juicy, True Religion etc.

As for shoes, size 5 is common here....you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem.

    Happy spending!!!!

    Another shopping query

You lucky girl! If you were looking for high end designer stuff I%26#39;d say go to Woodbury. But since you%26#39;re looking for mid range stuff, I%26#39;d try the shops in Manhattan first. If you don%26#39;t find what you want, then try one of the malls out of town.

    Some ideas for in NYC

%26gt;Ann Taylor is a chain that carries good small sizes (and Loft by Ann Taylor).

%26gt;J. Crew has nice casual things and also carries a lot of small sizes.

%26gt;DSW is a huge shoe store with a big size range.

%26gt;I%26#39;d also make a quick pass through the sale racks at Henri Bendel on Fifth Ave. It%26#39;s a small dept. store with great things and many in small sizes.

%26gt;Find Outlet on west 17 st.

We have junior sizes here (usually for teens) that run in odd numbers 3, 5, 7 etc. that might also work for you. You%26#39;ll find junior depts in most of the dept stores.

You will be fine staying in NYC. There is just about every major store and everything in between. Broadway%26#39;s shopping is amazing. You can find all the major stores, but there are always no name stores with cheaper cloths too.

Thanks everyone, looks like a precious day will be freed up. Glad to know size 5 shoes aren%26#39;t a problem, I%26#39;m a regular visitor to Chicago and struggle to get 5s there. A bit like I struggle here at home!!

I agree with your decision to stay in NYC. You have to consider the cost of the RT bus to Woodbury, it would be quite expensive for two people. You will be delighted with the many sales that will be in progress during your stay.

I just spent four days in NYC with my eight year old daughter. She loved Chinatown! Lots of shops with little things girls love to buy. Cheap wallets, purses. jewelry, belts etc.

cdierich - Tell us more!!! Will you be writing a trip report? We love them!

Empire State building, esp. with new king kong movie out.

oh and the 4th floor of macys total kids fashion experience complete with loud music and flashing lights, but if she%26#39;s a ';young'; 12 year old then skip it.

    All great ideas. Thanks

It will be VERY crowded everywhere, especially around Times Square. But no trip to NYC with a 12-year-old would be complete without seeing this great site. The Toys R Us store there is another must.

Be sure that your daughter knows the name and address (with cross streets) of your hotel. (Tuck a business card or brochure from the hotel in her coat pocket.) Be sure she has enough money to take a taxi back to the hotel, in case you get separated in the crowds. We always had a rule in my family that, if separated, you go back to the last place you saw each other. But, you need a fail-safe back-up plan in case something goes wrong.

    Park Ridge NJ to Manhattan

Hi, I am coming to New York in February, and will be staying with a friend who lives in Park Ridge, New Jersey. She works so I will need to get around without her help. I am having a bit of trouble working out how to get from Park Ridge to Manhattan. Can someone please help me out!

Can you catch subways the whole way, so I can use an unlimited Metrocard? or do you have to go on PATH and then subway or bus or what! I am getting so confused!!

    Thanks!

    Park Ridge NJ to Manhattan

    can%26#39;t your friend help?

she must have some idea how to get to Manhattan

    Park Ridge NJ to Manhattan

The New York City transit system does not cross state lines.

The borough of Park Ridge is on the Pascack Valley line of New Jersey Transit, though. If you can get to the station, you can take a train to Secaucus Juction and switch for a train to Manhattan, or you can continue to Hoboken and take the Port Authority%26#39;s PATH train into the city.

I%26#39;m sure she can help, but i want to work it out before i get there, and a phone call between australia and america is quite expensive, when i can get a pretty quick response for free asking on a forum...

Thanks Greenwhiteblue. Can you use the metrocard on the Pascack Valley line?

Emailing or IMing would work since you%26#39;re concerned about cost. Without a car in the far suburbs of NJ does not give you a lot of options so you had better be communicating with her before your arrival.

    www.mta.info

metrocards work on nyc subway and buses and PATH trains only

As broadwaynyc noted, you cannot use an NYC Metrocard on NJ Transit.

For more information about trains to Park Ridge, go to the NJ transit page

    www.njtransit.com/sf_tr_schedules.shtml#

    Aussie_Chick20 --

Rockland Coaches also have buses from Park Ridge to NYC. These are usually slightly more expensive than New Jersey Transit, but they offer more direct routes.

Here%26#39;s a link for the services you require:

    http://shorl.com/byfydudrybrety

You could get a bus to the GW Bridge Terminal where you then go downstairs %26amp; catch the A train. This will take you down 8th Ave thru Manhattan; the Express is a quick ride, assuming you%26#39;re looking to go to 59th St %26amp; south.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you do a bit of research on Park Ridge. It%26#39;s a nice town in Northern Bergen County, NJ. There are no subways, the closest PATH station is probably Hoboken (a small city that%26#39;s at least a 45 minute drive away,) although a commuter train runs thru the town (I think.)

Hopefully, your friend lives w/in walking distance of the downtown area, or at least a bus stop, because Park Ridge is not a city, it%26#39;s a suburb, and, as previously mentioned, without a car you%26#39;ll be lost.

Thats great, thanks so much for your help!

Getting to and from Madison Square Garden area

I will be bringing my 74 year old mother to MSG for the Westminster dog show. We plan on going to the show for part of the day, returning to the hotel for a break and going back in the afternoon or evening. The show is open until 10pm or so both nights.

We%26#39;re willing to walk a bit between the hotel and MSG, but I%26#39;m concerned about distance and safety. Would it be better to stay at the Metro and walk back and forth or stay further away at the Westin (Times Square)and rely on cabs. We%26#39;d love the freedom of being able to walk, but other posts suggest this is a dreary (possibly unsafe?)neighborhood.

If the cost of these two options were the same, what would you suggest?

    Thanks in advance!

Getting to and from Madison Square Garden area

Where exactly are these two hotels you are referencing. This would be helpful for those wishing to respond to your query.

The areas mentioned are highly populated, I would deem them as safe as any other midtown locales, however if safety is an issue, take a cab.

    Poppa

Getting to and from Madison Square Garden area

    Thanks for your reply.

The Metro is at 45 West 35th (supposedly about 0.3mi from MSG).

The Westin is at 270 West 43rd (about a block off Times Square and about 0.6mi from MSG)

I would recommend that you try the Affinia Manhattan. Right across from the Garden and a nice suite hotel. affinia.com

This is not an unsafe area for walking and because of MSG and Penn Station, there are always plenty of people on the street.

The Metro should be fine. It%26#39;s right off Sixth Ave in front of Macy%26#39;s which is very close to MSG on Seventh Ave. You would only have to walk one avenue and three blocks south to get there. If you%26#39;re mother can get around at all, she should be able to make it. Of course, I don%26#39;t know her too well though. If not, it%26#39;s be about a $4-$5 cab ride.

Also, I don%26#39;t know who said midtown in the 30s was unsafe, but they%26#39;re out of their minds if they think that. You could get a wallet pickpocketed if you%26#39;re unaware and in the crowds on 34th st, but you won%26#39;t be in any danger at any time.

West 35th Street is not unsafe by any means, but it is a bit dreary after about 9 pm. It%26#39;s a somewhat commerical area with luncheonettes, shops and wholesale places, which close down at night. It%26#39;s just blah, and not busy. The action is on the Avenues.

I like the reco for the Affinia. It gets good reviews here.

My advice is to stay as close as possible. There will be a lot of walking inside the dog show. You%26#39;ll both be tired. Not a question of safety. If you%26#39;re not used to walking on paved streets, my suggestion is...stay close you%26#39;ll both be happier. The streets around the Garden will be filled morning, noon and night. That%26#39;s not the issue. It%26#39;s difficult to get cabs at certain times so you will most likely be walking.

    jr

The area is safe, just not terribly attractive. But for this purpose, I agree stay as close as possible as long as it%26#39;s a good hotel. I think the Affinia Manhattan or even the Affinia Dumont would be great. From the Dumont, you could walk or take the crosstown 34 st bus. The Metro is also fine but the others I think are a bit nicer.

You MUST bring comfortable shoes. You%26#39;ll have a ball.;)

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

The Affinia looks great, but is booked already.

Looks like most people recommend staying close and walking. Is it that much of a pain to get a taxi in the MSG/Penn Station area? I don%26#39;t want to get stuck at 10pm some night, but am leaning towards taking advantage of frequent guest points at the Westin...

To Tour or Not To Tour

(sounds like a musical! ha ha!)

Regarding Ellis Island and SOL - Im browsing their webstie and I know you have to take circleline charter to actually to go there but does that include the tour? and if you dont take the guided tour, what area are you allowed to view? Im confused,... can anyone tell me if its actually worth it?

To Tour or Not To Tour

There is a tour of the inside of the Statue but you would need to make a reservation for this.

Here is the info on the statue tour:

Current Park Hours: Liberty Island 9:30am - 5:00pm.

Visitors experience a special insider%26#39;s view of the engineering marvel that is the Statue of Liberty. Time passes are needed to enter the monument. A limited number of time passes are available at the ferry ticket offices for walk-ins on a first-come, first-served basis or reserved in advance by calling the ferry company at: 1-866-STATUE4(1-866-782-8834)U.S. calls only. Callers outside the U.S. can call the NY ticket office at: (212) 269-5755 or on-line at: WWW.STATUERESERVATIONS.COM

To better understand this monumental work of art, visitors will be able to view inside the Statue through a glass ceiling, guided by a park ranger and an enhanced lighting and new video system. In addition, visitors can walk out onto the Statue鈥檚 observation deck to see the panoramic views of New York City and the Harbor, and witness the Statue up close from her promenade and Ft. Wood. The Statue%26#39;s crown is not accessible and the torch has been officially closed since July 1916.

Here is the site for info on Ellis Island:

    http://www.nps.gov/elis/

    Hope this helps.

To Tour or Not To Tour

So just to make sure I am understanding correctly, you have to purchase a tour in addition to the ferry ride, right? And its only worth doing circle line if you are interested in the tour, otherwise you may as well see it from the SI ferry i suppose...

Sorry im being a pain, i%26#39;ve gone back and forth on the idea. Its not really a money concern - im just seeing if it money well spent or if we should perhaps save it for something else....

You only pay for the ferry, the tour is free, if you choose to do it. Otherwise you can walk around the island and see the statue up close %26amp; personal. From all of the previous posts on this subject people seem to enjoy this tour, plus everyone finds The Ellis Island Museum quite interesting, so why not do both?

I was just at Ellis Island/SOL on my last NYC visit in October. To do each justice, you need at great deal of time at both (I would say 2-3 hours each, plus the boat ride. You don%26#39;t want to get down to the boat dock any later than noonish to do full justice to the sites.

If you%26#39;re looking for a shorter visit, and only want to tour one of them, I would pick Ellis Island. Ellis Island and its history are far more interesting and educational IMO.

Trying to decide between 3 hotels....

My best friend %26amp; I are going to NYC in March to celebrate my 40th bday!

Based on reviews %26amp; comments %26amp; rates, I%26#39;ve narrowed my selection down to 3 places; The Novotel, The Belvedere, and On the Ave.

I know the Novotel %26amp; Belvedere are more centrally located but I also like the idea of being in a ';neighborhood'; and close to the park. If we stay at On the Ave, are we going to wind up spending all our money on cabs %26amp; subways to get everywhere?

So I guess I%26#39;m kinda taking a poll. Out of those 3 which would you pick %26amp; why?

Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Trying to decide between 3 hotels....

Hi, My daughter lives in Greenich Village and I have gone up to NYC several times over the past few years...last month i rented an apt at Harold towers for the same price as a hotel...more room if you need it and a kitchen, but for your Birthday you%26#39;d probably not want to cook! NY hotel are very small and paying $400/night would get you the standard of a $100/night hotel room. Manhatten is walkable! A nice stroll even at night, well lighted always others walking, ex. uptown to midtown or midtown to downtown, if tired a cab is only $4-6 to anywhere in town...not much more than a metro fare for two. If you don%26#39;t want to spend all your money on a hotel to sleep... hey you%26#39;re in NYC! Save it to do and see things! The cleanest, most reasonable stay on a budget is Hotel 17 or Hotel 31...old and quaint. Pictures on the website, young models, European students stay here...no tourists really. Like in Europe, some rooms have shower down the hall. $79-99/night as cheap as $50 off season. Do go to 46th/Broadway to buy steeply disounted tickets to any Broadway play...ex. $40 for Phantom of the Opera. They only sell the seats left for that day%26#39;s show. Have cheesecake at Sardi%26#39;s like Doris Day to get to sit in the restarount so frequently filmed, walk through Central Park...now this is further and more tiring than uptown to downtown!!! Shop for cheap knockoffs on Cannal street...hey thay may be fake but the quality of the watches, purses etc are better than walmart and cheaper and cute! ps always bargain to pay less. Do not buy any dvd%26#39;s unless it is for a gag gift very cheesy poor quality, incomplete/illegal too. Happy Birthday!!! Enjoy your trip...I%26#39;m going back up next month for my birthday. ps The Met is almost as good as the Louve! if i can answer any other questions for you. Mary Catherine

    Luggage allowance?

I am going to the big apple this Sunday for a week. We intend bringing a big(ish) case each and one piece of hand luggage each.

As we hope to shop til we drop, will we get away with a second case each coming back? Any customs issues?

    Flying with AerLingus from Dublin.

This has maybe been asked before so sorry for repeating.

    Luggage allowance?

Have you checked the AerLingus website? Each airline varies slightly on what is allowed. Also, if you shop too much - you can always stop by a mailboxes or UPS store and ship your stuff back to Ireland.

    Luggage allowance?

Some airlines also have weight restrictions on each piece of luggage, not just the number, so call AerLingus.

This info is from the Arelingus website

    Checked baggage

    Allowances as follows:

    Transatlantic Routes Premier Economy

    Number of pieces 2 2

    Dimensions of bag =

    length + width + height 158 cms/62 ins per bag 1 bag at 158 cms/62 ins and 1 bag at 140 cms/55 ins 1 bag at 115 cms/45 ins and 1 collapsible stroller

The weight of any one piece of baggage must not exceed 32 Kgs/70 lbs.

The Transatlantic baggage allowance also will apply for all travel in Ireland and Europe for passengers originating in the U.S. on an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight.

    Hi there

    Thanks for the advice.

Elle - ta for all the trouble to get me the aer lingus info.

Hi Eighteen no problem we just got back 2 weeks ago and are desperate to go back, have beween offered a super deal for Jan 19 3 nights out of Belfast staying in Intercontinental The Barclay trying to justify going back to myself (and my kids who will be left behind again ;-)any way hope you have a wonderful time look forward to a trip report - Elle

Why are you taking so much to start with?

Last time I went, I literally took one hange of clothing in my suitcase, and it was full on my return.

Also this looks better with customs as if you have worn new clothes, they bviously don%26#39;t look so new!!

    Have fun!!

Thanks we had a blast of a trip. Trip report to follow. Luggage was no problem as we were within limits.

AngieM - you obviously don%26#39;t have an 18 year old daughter - she couldn%26#39;t decide what to bring so brought most of her wardrobe, straying in to my baggage too!!!!!!!!

  • Ice Skating

How much is it to do ice skating at Rockefella?

    Ice Skating

    http://www.nyctourist.com/rock_center_ice.htm

    Ice Skating

But Bryant Park is free, youjust pay to rent skates and the skating is great!

And there%26#39;s Wollman Rink in Central Park - it has an admission fee plus skate rental fee.

Just as an aside, one of the great rip-offs IMHO is Wollman charging a $5.00 per person fee to watch the skaters! I took my daughter there last week and almost fell over when they told me that!

Try the hill about a block away to do your free looking!

    FYI, it is ';Rockefeller';.

Just because we drop our ';Rs'; when speaking, doesn%26#39;t mean they don%26#39;t exist! ;o)

I have just returned from NYC and highly recommend Bryant Park....as the previous post said it%26#39;s free and has a really nice atmosphere. It was my favourite rink - Rockefeller and Central Park seemed busier and more touristy.....

I`d definitely go to Bryant park, just returned from NY and the highlight of the trip for my 2 kids{ages 6+10} was the ice skating !We went at 8am one morning and it was very quiet, they have several people to help show you how to skate if you have never done it before

    trip report

The only negative aspects of our trip related to our Aer Lingus flight. Having travelled twice before to NYC with Virgin and BA respectively, I had expected really nice service, individual tv screens, selection of viewing, a goody bag containing albeit cheap, items to make the trip more comfortable. Sadly none of this was available.

    Anyway New York Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

We got the administration done in Dublin so getting through JFK was seamless. Took the advice of a learned tripadvisor contributor and walked past all the guys shouting %26#39;taxi%26#39; until we got to the line for yellow cabs. My daughter%26#39;s eyes were like saucers from when we saw that line until we got to our hotel, Jolly Madison Towers.

On check-in, I mentioned that it was a trip for my daughter%26#39;s 18th and they upgraded us to a superior room. Not that big but very clean and no complaints on any aspect.

Dumped all luggage and went straight to Central Park. 2.15pm a frosty Sunday afternoon, and there we were walking round Central Park eating pretzels. My daughter loving every second.

We walked down the West side of CP and along to 5th Avenue. Loved the shop windows and ended up at Times Sq. Called into a lovely bar called Maxine%26#39;s. Just sat at the window drinking (non-alcholic) and watching the busy world go by and hugging ourselves that we had the rest of the week to be New Yorkers.

Sunday evening saw us in TGI Friday%26#39;s for dinner. Good stuff.

Monday 19th December - Went to a local deli for pancakes and maple syrip then met a friend from Brooklyn who brought us on the subway to Queen%26#39;s for discussions with my daughter about some gap year work experience. Lovely, lovely people who brought us to a lovely wee Irish pub for lunch.

From there we went to Ground Zero. I have been there before but I still got very emotional thinking of the many lives lost and of the families and loved ones who are still affected by the tragedy. In ensuring that they are never forgotton, I also felt a sense of determination in New Yorkers that building for the future is a priority.

We went from GZ to Century 21 and spent a fortune on loads of bargains. After this we went to St Patrick%26#39;s cathedral - a sanctuary within a very busy city. We said a little prayer and just absorbed the character of the church. This was marred somewhat by a guy with two children complaining loudly about the security man who appeared to be only doing his job. The man%26#39;s voice reverberated around the church nastily and he said he wanted to get the security man fired that he was trying to teach his children about church. I loved it when the security lady quietly said ';what about teaching the girls some forgiveness';? Still the complaining guy didn%26#39;t spoil our visit.

Finished our first full day with dinner in our hotel, had an Italian meal each. Very nice.

    More to follow...................

    trip report

You%26#39;ve found the ';real'; New York -- it%26#39;s not in the tourist attractions, but in strolling the park and having a pretzel. Good for you!

Looking forward to the next installment.

    Help! Trip not going well.

#1 Feet hurt badly #2 Hotel (Avalon) room so hot we can%26#39;t sleep/they told us, ';open a window'; #3 one of the 2 hotel elevators not working #4 the crowds are terrible #5 teen daughters mad at each other #6 waiting time for restaurants we want to go to is long and wait time for ferry to statue of liberty was 2 hours(we said forget it). I am usually the MOST optimistic person. Just needed to vent. We are here until January 3. I just wanted this to be a great vacation for our family. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Help! Trip not going well.

Just read about Sole. I think I must make an appt. and I will try a different pair of shoes today. Thanks to all of you New Yorkers that reply to our posts.

    Help! Trip not going well.

I don%26#39;t know what to say except I hope things turn up!

Nothing to do about the hotel. As for crowds, this is the most crowded week of the year in New York -- I don%26#39;t go out except to go to work, and do some errands in the neighborhood, and will wait til next week to catch up on movies, museums and shopping.

But since you don%26#39;t have that option, try going to less crowded areas -- get away from midtown and explore tthe West Village or Chelsea or the Upper West Side. Central Park has plenty of open space and has a more rugged beauty this time of year.

As for restaurants, pretend you never heard of the ones you already had in mind and go discover some fun funky places -- you%26#39;ll feel like an adventurous New Yorker. Ninth Avenue in the 40s and 50s is particularly good, as is the East Village. There%26#39;s a terrific Ethiopian restaurant, Meskerem at 468 W 47th St New York, between 9th and 10thh Avenues.

You gotta be like a New Yorker; that old cliche about when the going gets tough is true.

But you should feel free to vent here. A lot of New Yorkers would just do it on the street. :o)

Wow, sorry things aren%26#39;t going the way you expected. Teenage daughters locking horns, with all of you in one room? Ouch, that%26#39;s gotta hurt!

    1. Sorry about your feet, but this is a walking city. Are you wearing sneakers? Sole is WONDERFUL! You won%26#39;t be disappointed. The only disappointment is you still have to use your feet afterwards. Wish they provided a ';carry you home'; service.

    2. The best way to counteract over-enthusiastic heating system that you can%26#39;t adjust is to open a window. Or sleep naked.

    3. That stinks. I%26#39;m assuming taking the stairs is out of the question?

    4. Crowds? What crowds?

    5. Buy them each a MetroCard, give each a map, spending money and some quarters (or a cell phone). Tell them to go their separate ways and come back in two hours. Worked for my parents!

    6. Waiting times? What waiting times?

(Seriously - where are you eating? Are you going to touristy restaurants? Try eating at ';off hours'; and going to Chelsea, Murray Hill or Gramercy Park. I%26#39;ve been eating out all week, and not seen crowds.)

Don%26#39;t forget to drink lots of water. Since your room is hot, you are exercising a lot (by walking more than you are used to) and there is low humidity, you may be dehydrated and not realize it. I suspect this is a factor. Re-hydrating will reduce foot swelling, fatigue and crankiness.

p.s. get an umbrella - it is supposed to rain the next couple of days.

In adddition to PontMarie%26#39;s great suggestions re: the dining situation, I would suggest considering eating an early dinner, say around 5 p.m. Most places, especially off the beaten path, will seat you immediately at that hour. If you all think you%26#39;d be hungry later in the evening, then buy some snacks and drinks. Sorry to hear that your hotel room is so hot. You could look at it this way--it%26#39;s better than being too cold. I have a 20-year old daughter so I know how moody teens can get. If you haven%26#39;t already, ask them what they would like to do (within reason, of course!). We did that with our daughter when we went to NYC with her. Of course, we drew the line when she said she wanted to go to H%26amp;M and do a lot of shopping! I have found with most vacations, you do have some down days that don%26#39;t go as planned.

Have just returned from a Xmas stay so would suggest - Top of the Rock - no queues at all, only five of us up there. Let teen daughters explore on their own. I had blisters on blisters - painkillers were my only solution. Have you tried Statten Island Ferry ?- this will go past S of L and is free. Hope things get better for you and your family.

You%26#39;ve gotten great advice. The only thing I%26#39;ll add is start heading south. Just south of you in the teens and 20s there are lots of restaurants and shops that will be less crowded.

Fifth ave. in the 20s has lots of shops the teens will like. Go to the Forbes museum (free) on Fifth ave. %26amp; 12 st. From there keep going south to Otto%26#39;s for pizza at 1 Fifth Ave. You%26#39;ll be right in front of Washington Square Park. Then keep going south (or west) into the village. You%26#39;ll all like it.

I can offer great sympathy my feet were terribly painful. It wasnt blisters it was a problem with the arches. I took different shoes and rotated them but nothing worked they throbbed so bad. My husband went to duane reede and got me some arch supports and also some of their own brand pain reliver cream and we rubbed that in my feet every day and it numbed them nicely and really helped somewhat!

the crowds were bad the 2nd half of our holiday after that weekend (the one before xmas) and it was really bad then so we gave up on the places to eat that had the crowds.

we had probs with our two eldest killing each other they are 16 and 12 and it was hell, to be honest they ruined it and tears from me didnt help but rest assured seeing as they couldnt control their tempers for 5 mins we informed them this would be the last family holiday with both of them together and sure as sure they are being shipped to grand parents next december whilst we take the little one to disney (the big three have already been and me and hubby need a break from them!)

with the hotel, maybe bluff and say you are a travel agent and you shallnot be sending any more business this way or give send an anonymous email to the them with a link a new subjet on this site saying something like the hotel avalon lacks customer care....maybe then the publicity will do something!

    hope it gets betters!

Try the Jekyll and Hyde Club for the teenagers. It%26#39;s entertaining and will give the kids something to do for 2 hours or so. We just got back from NYC 18-21 and stayed at the Avalon, me and a friend and our 2 teenage sons age 14 and 15. The heat wasnt an issue with us, but the plumbing was. We had to move rooms 2 times, thank goodness it was only the 2 of us in a Junior Suite. IF you continue to have problems, ask for a room change or upgrade. We did and got it!!Go to website eerie.com for directions to the Club. I think its at the edge of Central park, or in that general area. We went on a Monday night and had no lines, and they told us usually during the week you can get right in. Only long lines on the weekends. Hope things work out for you! Its a shame about the Avalon. Beautiful hotel, but major problems with lack of service, etc. Maybe because of union workers on strike? Anyway, good luck!!!

Just returned with our teenage son and we agreed that next time we will come alone and doo all the things we want to do but as others have recommended go south out of midtown and you are sure to find many less crowded places to eat - the vallage, soho etc. Also, get down to the Staten Island ferry - no crowds and its freee and you also get good views of SOL and the south Manhattan skyline from the river.

Just back from trip with 2 kids aged 6 +10,they loved Mars 2112- you go on a space ride up to the restaurant{Mars} and martians come to visit the table.Food is ok-usual fare. Also, try Ellens Stardust Diner across the road, burger joint but all the waiting staff take turns to sing.Bennigans on corner of 8th and 48th had the best food and was the friendliest to the kids.Avoid TGI Fridays on Broadway, had to go there 1 night as it was late and could nt get in anywhere else and it was grotty, food was cold, very expensive and the place was filthy.Enjoy your trip !

Of course, it was probably even better since we weren%26#39;t paying! ;o)

Honestly, I%26#39;d happily go here again on my own. I%26#39;d say prices were what we in NYC call ';moderate';. The food and service were well worth the $3-$5 per dish more than I would normally expect to pay.

Since we had a large group, we received complimentary salmon tartare on little toasts. Already, we loved the place! Then we ordered a wide range of dishes, and everything I tasted and sampled was excellent.

I had sliced duck breast - which was nice and pink in the middle and juicy - with a soucatash of corn, figs, butternut squash, shallots and pecans. The shredded beet salad was also fresh and full of ';stuff';. I missed the goat cheese croquets, but heard they were amazing.

We all had different desserts - cheesecake with carmelized pecans, s%26#39;mores bread pudding, sorbet (lime/coconut/mango), gelato (chocoalte/vanilla/hazelnut), and a cheese platter with green apple and bread. They were all outstanding.

    Enjoy!

    (Just kidding!)

    How early to book trip/shows?

I am trying to plan an anniversary trip (5th!) to New York in early March. How far in advance do I need to book hotels/shows?

I%26#39;d like to do it pretty soon, but I don%26#39;t have the dates finalized quite yet.

    How early to book trip/shows?

I%26#39;d do it as soon as you have your dates! Many people are in NYC in March with spring vacations. When we went in March last year, I bought my tickets to see ';Wicked'; the week after Christmas....and a month later all their shows were sold out!

    How early to book trip/shows?

cl - as soon as you firm up your dates order your theater tickets. - broadwaybox.com or playbill.com and theatermania.com are all great discount sites.

Same for hotels, the sooner the better to get the best choice of rooms.

Hope you enjoy The Big Apple.

    Poppa

I used those sites to get theater tickets etc and it is a good price and you know you have tickets for the show. Do take a risk and buy same day tickets that go on sale for the afternoon or evening shows for the seats that are remaining at 46th and broadway! standing in a relatively short line in the morning will get you $40 tickets to Phantom of the Opera or Chicago etc... and even cheaper off broadway shows like the blue mans group. Newer shows are sold out fast or not available for popular times.

you%26#39;re referring to the TKTS booth which is fine except for sold-out shows such as The Lion King, Wicked, Spamalot, The Odd Couple.

with those you have no choice but to buy ahead if you want to pay a fortune to a ticket scalper

    that should say ';buy ahead UNLESS you want to pay a fortune to a ticket scalper';

there are always a few hanging around the TKTS booth

Of course i meant the TKTS booth...never risk buying from a scalper, you could pay a fortune and then not get to see the show because the tickets are fake at times! i also indicated only to take a risk to see an ';extra'; broadway show for so inexpensive.

I know that%26#39;s what you meant, but the original poster might not.

Some folks might not realize that for a show as popular as Wicked they must buy ahead.

There have been questions asked on this very message board about being to buy Lion King tickets at TKTS. :-o

I do hope Lion King will be available eventually...i would go see it again. I paid box office price to see it the first time and got balcony way off to the right, but still enjoyed the show. When we went last month at Thanksgiving I got some tickets ahead worried the holiday would sell out and risked getting one same day. Of course the NYC couple behind us paid only $40 for the show we got for $100, and we thought a bargain compared to $290. I am going up again next month and will buy from TKTS to see anything! Is Wicked or Spam-a-lot worth getting at full price and which web site did you find the best deals?

    Need some help here.......

Need some advice......leaving early from NYC or afternoon departure? Last time my wife and I were there we left early for the airport w/o any traffic problems checked our baggage w/o a line, and it was a smooth hassle free morning. As we waited for the airport to open we noticed how fast it got crowded.

OK the problem is that we are now traveling with another couple that doesn%26#39;t want to fly separately and doesn%26#39;t want to get up early. My wife and I would rather avoid the hassle and get out, but they don%26#39;t seem to believe us. Can anyone here help support my effort so that they want think I%26#39;m crazy. They have never been to a busy city/airport let alone NYC/LGA.

    Need some help here.......

Take two separate taxis - you go first as early as you want, and they can go later whenever they want. Meet them at the gate and see who wins!

    Loser buys drinks!

    XoP``````

    Need some help here.......

I%26#39;m not sure I understand the prob/question. Is it about how much time to leave to get to the airport or which return flight to book, an early morning or afternoon? If the first, QB%26#39;s solution is perfect. But I think it%26#39;s the second, which return flight to book. I hate to say it, but this could be the first of many disagreements. Sort it out before the trip. If they%26#39;re not morning people and you guys are, you%26#39;re gonna have a problem on the trip every day.

If leaving from Times Square what time should a person leave to make a 11:00am flight? My wife and I have always left early say 4:15am to 4:30am to make for a 6:00am flight.

The problem with an 11:00 AM flight is that if you want to get there two hours before the flight leaves (as they always recommend), you are trying to get there for 9:00 AM -- which means you will be travelling at the height of rush hour. A better question might be %26#39;what time do you want to arrive at the airport?%26#39;, and then take it from there.

If you need to get to LGA at 9 AM, leave Times Square 8 AM. True it%26#39;s rush hour, but you%26#39;ll be going against the traffic. The worst part will be getting out of Manhattan.

I think the best route to LGA is the Midtown Tunnel. You can take the Midtown tunnel to the Long Island Expwy, and change to Rte 278 E(Brooklyn-Queens-Expwy) which branches off into the Grand Central Parkway to LGA.

Use a AAA map or check the new beta of Yahoo Maps for better directions.

I think my fellow locals have got the problem boxed for you.

Are you leaving town on a weekend? This%26#39;ll matter. Early in the morning, or on a weekend I get to LaGuardia in 17-18 minutes from the Upper West Side. You%26#39;ll be by the QMTunnel, and it shouldn%26#39;t take much longer.....if it%26#39;s before the evening rush. Most frustrating part of your trip will be getting across town.

I agree with whomever it was that suggested you%26#39;d better examine how squabbles will be resolved with your fellow travellers, or you%26#39;re in for a rocky road.

    Joe in NYC

Short trip w/ 2 year old & fire at Radio City!

Decided to take a mini- weekend in NYC when I found a deal at the Grand Hyatt for $143 per night on a Sunday night in December. The night before %26amp; the night after were $500. We have been to NYC many times but wanted to bring our 2 year old grandson to see Santa %26amp; the Christmas Spectacular.

Drove up from MD %26amp; stayed in NJ on Sat night. Drove into the city on Sunday morning. Was a relatively easy drive %26amp; came right into the Grand Hyatt. Of course we couldn%26#39;t check in right away because they were sold out ';on both sides'; as they said. Stood in a very long line to check our bags but finally found a bellman who took our bags for us.

We then went to explore Grand Central Terminal. Even though we had visited the city many times, we had never been here before. We loved it! Went to the transit museum %26amp; had some lunch at Junior%26#39;s before looking around the Christmas fair. Since our room was still not ready we decided to split up - daughter %26amp; husband went shopping %26amp; my husband %26amp; I stayed with grandson. We walked up to Bryant Park %26amp; looked around the Christmas fair there, watched the skaters %26amp; grandson rode on the carousel. By the time we got back, our rooms were ready (exactly 3 pm). Rooms were very nice %26amp; beds were comfortable. I was a little worried because of some of the reviews - but I am picky %26amp; I found the rooms perfectly fine. Went to see Christmas Tree at Rock Center that night - got pictures taken in front of it that we ordered online %26amp; then took grandson to see Santa at Macys. Line was long but went very fast. He wasn%26#39;t so sure that he wanted to see Santa but got a cute picture with him anyway.

Daughter %26amp; husband got up early on Monday to go to Regis %26amp; Kelly. Husband, grandson %26amp; I went to breakfast at Pershing Square. A beautiful restaurant %26amp; good food. By then it was time for us to head back to the hotel to gather up our bags to be checked so we could head up to Radio City. We had just settled in our seats %26amp; I was feeling particularly emotional because I remembered seeing the show with our daughter when she was young %26amp; now here I was with our grandson. Well so much for those feelings because all of the sudden, everyone was grabbing their coats %26amp; running out the fire exits. Seems there was a fire in a closet. We had to stand in the Plaza for an hour %26amp; wait for them to check out the building. Well back to our seats %26amp; the show. Grandson enjoyed it but got a little restless toward the end. After the show we tried to eat at the Rock Center Cafe but the line was ridiculously long. So grabbed a bite at John%26#39;s Pizza %26amp; then headed back to collect our bags %26amp; head home. Unfortunately we ran into some bad traffic on 78 in NJ %26amp; it took us 8 hours to get home. It was a nightmare - only thing we could do was laugh!.

All in all a good but short trip. Will be heading back in the Spring with about 5 busses of teachers for a girl%26#39;s weekend.

Thanks to all the posters for some great advice %26amp; happy new year to all!

Short trip w/ 2 year old %26amp; fire at Radio City!

Thanks for the short but sweet report. Glad the fire didn%26#39;t cause a meltdown for the day, or your grandson. It sounds like a lovely weekend getaway to the big city. Happy New Year!

Short trip w/ 2 year old %26amp; fire at Radio City!

Sounds like a fun weekend, it%26#39;s great to see that so many people are taking their kids to NYC, it really is a wonderful family vacation destination.
