First time to NYC

I am travelling to NYC for the first time with my 14 year old daughter (girls%26#39; treat!) in February. Staying for 5 nights in Murray Hill area. Any advice on the must-see sights so we can make the most of our stay? Also what is the best/safest way to travel around the city - I enjoy walking but my daughter may not be too keen. Is it possible to buy travel cards for use on buses/subway? We have the use of a kitchen at the hotel but would like to eat out once or twice in the evening - any recommendations in the Murray Hill area? Any advice welcomed. Thanks.

Do you have a guide book yet? If not, you should get one and start getting the lay of the land.

Start searching this forum for trip reports, or phrases like ';must see';, and you will have all your questions answered!

Like I said, maps are essential for planning your itinerary. Personally, my fave is the Not for Tourist guide. Very thorough, and all maps are printable from the website, once you register for free:

To sightsee, group things by location/neighborhood. The majority of attractions are in Manhattan and easily accessible by subway.

For example, in lower Manhattan you can do these within a 1 mile radius: Staten Island Ferry, Battery Park, Wall Street, Trinity Church, Subtreasurey Building, Museum of Finance, Ground Zero, Century 21, St. Paul%26#39;s Chapel, Fulton Street, South Street Seaport.

The subway runs 24-7-365 and is very safe. Of course, one should use common sense and always keep a good handle on personal belongings, money, cameras, etc. Don%26#39;t keep your wallet in your back pants pocket, etc.

Finally, you MUST wear comfortable shoes. This is a walking city. You%26#39;ll end up with great legs!

First time to NYC

Hi!

First of all, do a search on this forum, there are so many posts from people who have traveled with teens, plus lots of posts about the Murray Hill area. You will get great information from these.

As a first timer, may I suggest applying for a Big Apple Greeter - www.bigapplegreeter.org.

IT is a free service that pairs a volunteer ';greeter'; with visitors to show them the ropes. It is wonderful, and I am prejudice, because I am a greeter myself.

And yes, subway %26amp; bus is the way to go, you can buy per trip cards or a weekly card, depends on how many trips you think you will take.

Must sees are very subjective....but, in my opinion they would include, in no particular order:

1) Central Park

2) ESB or Top of the Rock (or both - if you want a 2 for 1 voucher for Top of the Rock put in your email address %26amp; I can send you one)

3) A walk over the Brooklyn Bridge

4) Grand Central Station

5) A Broadway show and Times Square

6) Greenwich Village %26amp; The Upper West Side

7) A museum

8) Ellis Island %26amp; The Statue of Liberty

There are so many more, just so much to do.

Check Queensboulevard posts about various websites and information. It is very complete.

Whatever you do, you will have a great time.

See, QB is always on the case!!!!
