I%26#39;ve been there only once and I really didn%26#39;t have time to look around, I just moved outside to queue for a Taxi.
This time I will try to make it by bus (which leaves right outside the terminal, it%26#39;s #10) and I could use a 7 days Unlimited MetroCard to get to my lodging; the ride includes 2 transfers and there%26#39;s a chance I won%26#39;t make it in less than 2 hours.
Are MetroCards available at JFK airport?
Are you sure you want to take the Q10 bus?
Unless you are traveling at rush hour, from the schedule it looks like it takes about 55 minutes just to get from JFK terminals to Kew Gardens with the subway connections.

if you are taking the A subway, it won%26#39;t be so bad since the bus ride to Lefferts %26amp; Rockaway is 30 minutes
I would look in the newstands. Many of them sell metrocards, though the pay-per-ride ones, not the unlimited.
I have booked a room in Astoria (in Ditmars Boulevard, near Subway N) and it looks like I have to take Q10 at terminal 4, then transfer to Q60 at Kew Gardens, and at last to Q19A at Queens Plaza.
All this starting at around 6 PM at JFK ( rush hours, right?) my guess is that it will take quite a lot of time...
