Building in NYC

Hi

I%26#39;m trying to find out what a particular building is in NYC. It%26#39;s near the Chrysler building, it%26#39;s black and the top slopes on two sides to make a point.

I know this is a bit vague - I%26#39;ve tried loads of websites but can%26#39;t find anything!

Building in NYC

Could you possibly mean near Bryant Park/NY Public Library area, the American Radiator Building at 40 West 40th Street?

Here is a link to some pictures: http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/hood/hood4.html

Building in NYC

Thanks for the reply

I%26#39;ve looked at the link and unfortunately it doesnt look like the same building - the one I%26#39;m trying to find has a sloping top rather than stepped - we think it is a fairly modern building.

Is it this building to the right of the Chrysler building in this photo?

Yes here it is again, i%26#39;ve no idea:

Yes - that%26#39;s the one - the black one to the right of the Chrysler building!

ok i think it%26#39;s the Trump Apartments on first ave:

nope, sorry i%26#39;m wrong again, Trump apartments is the tall skinny building.

Found it this time! It%26#39;s an apartment building, 100 United Nations Plaza:

kudos to me

thanks so much for replying - it was driving us mad!

And 100 UN Plaza is a condominium building at the corner of First Avenue and 48th Street, with a plaza in front of it. The Trump World Tower is across 48th street on First Avenue between 47th and 48th.

  • Bedrooms in private houses offered to tourists: how to be...

I%26#39;ve been suggested to take a look at craigslist.org looking for cheap accomodations in NYC. I%26#39;d say there are some very interesting offers, but how to be sure?

I mean, it is almost always requested to pay in advance at least part of the money, and once paid it%26#39;s just a matter of trusting the other person? You have to trust that the person you talk to(and give your money to) is who he\she says he is and actually willing to alllow me into one of his bedrooms?

I am 6.500 km. away from NYC, and I would not have any way to check before I actually get there.

    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Bedrooms in private houses offered to tourists: how to be...

that is basically the gist of the problem

even though I live in the USA, unless I take the time and physically go to the place, I wouldn%26#39;t know either

and even if you know the house exists

how would you know that the bedroom is really available?

    it%26#39;s just like eBay

    risks because it is ';cheap';

and when you run into problems, you are in Italy and the courts and police are here in the USA

How much time to get through customs (international flight...

    Hello,

We%26#39;ve booked a trip to NY. And plan to get a limo or a sedan to pick us up at JFK. But I really don%26#39;t know how much time we will need to get through customs. The Limo company needs to know of course at what time the driver should pick us up.

We arrive with an international flight from Brussels at 1.30pm.

Or maybe, we should be taking a taxi?

    So ... can anyone help?

How much time to get through customs (international flight...

A taxi is very easy if there are not more than 4 of you. It%26#39;s a set price of $45 plus toll ($4) and tip--so about $55-60. At that time of day, I%26#39;d take a taxi.

How much time to get through customs (international flight...

    thx Nywhiz!

Do I order a limo/sedan to get us back to the airport, because I think taxi%26#39;s are payed by the meter when going to the airport?

Flight%26#39;s leaving at 7.50 pm. When should we meet the driver than?

    Thx

Yes, I%26#39;d get a car service back to the airport. For an int%26#39;l flight you need to be there 2 hrs. before flight time. (Doublecheck with your airline). That means be there at 5:50 which puts you in rush hour traffic. I%26#39;d leave at 4-4:30 on a weekday.

    H茅 Nywhiz,

    Thanks for your help!!

I guess we will '; do it your way';.

Should we make an online reservation for the car service now, or is it better to do it from the hotel, once we arrive in NY?

    Thanks again!

It doesn%26#39;t really matter how you order the car. If you order now online, just make sure to confirm by email or phone a day or so before. If you wait til you get here, just be aware what prices are and if the hotel offers to do this for you, make sure they%26#39;re not using someone really expensive (which often happens). Ask how much it will be. (Or phone one of these yourself.)

    airtrain

hi guys - just looking for some advice - arriving at lunchtime on jan7th into jfk - was looking at taking the airtrain and then subway to our hotel on W52nd and Broadway - just how difficult is it - the subway maps look so confusing - used the underground in london and the metro in london with ease but it looks quite taxing - help!!!

    airtrain

The AirTrain trip is very easy. When you arrive at Jamaica Station there will be signs to guide you in the direction of the Subway Platform. The platform will also be marked, Manhattan (right) and Queens (left). You want the Manhattan side, obviously.

Fear not, even if you get on the wrong train, it only goes one stop further into Queens before turning around and heading back to Manhattan, there is no way to screw it up.

    airtrain

Oh..and get off the train when you reach 50th st station.

This option is really only good if you don%26#39;t have too much luggage as you will have to haul it up and down stairs. If that%26#39;s ok, take the AirTrain to the E train subway stop. Take the E train and get out either at 7 Avenue /53 Street or the next stop, 50 Street /8 Avenue, not sure which would be closer.

yes we will only have a backpack each so luggage isn%26#39;t a problem Why do you new yorkers make everything sound so simple!!!!

it looks like we will use thisoption - do we buy tickets at the airport?

No.. you buy the tickets after the train ride is over in Jamaica via vending machine.

You may see a few first timers on the platform at JFK looking confused cause there is no place to buy tickets, even I thought it was a little weird the first time.

Also make sure the signboard says ';Jamaica Station'; before you get on the train. (Above the doors)

now i am confused!! we were planning on taking the airtrain to howard beach and then geting the subway from howard beach to 50th - is this another option??

Yes Jamaica is much quicker. You will enter Manhattan in midtown, and it%26#39;s fewer stops in Queens.

It%26#39;s the same track, so its not confusing at all.

i was just checking my subway map and yes it does look a lot quicker - how long can i expect the trip to take - thanks you have been a huge help

AirTrain is crazy fast, you will be at Jamaica in about 10 minutes then from Jamaica to 50th st is about 25 minutes.

Depending on the transfer time, I would say it should take roughly an hour for the entire trip.

trip report... Christmas with the kids

    A Transit strike, a seven year old with the flu, a delayed flight on a puddle jumper that we had to walk onto the tarmak to board. (In an Alex Trebek voice) ';What are ways to make a shaky start to you vacation?';

I was so nervous that all of my months of planning were in vain, but once in the air everything started coming together. We finally left Louisville and arrived at La Guardia 1 1/2 hours later eager to see the city. We stepped into a yellow cab with no wait and began our whirlwind ride into Oz. I noticed a picture of Muhammad affixed to the dashboard of the cab and although I am a Christian, I figured at this point we can use all the help we can get! The ride cost $40 with toll and tip. We arrived in one piece at the Marriott Marquis hotel. The hotel was perfect, we never waited even one full minute for an elevator and the system was simple. We were on the 11th floor so this may have helped, the higher up I assume the longer the wait. Our room was surprisingly large with two double beds and because we were situated at the side of the building we had a partial view of times square. The view was perfectly adequate for me considering how little time we spent in the room, I wouldn%26#39;t pay the extra $$ for the full view. I%26#39;ll submit a full review on TA later on the hotel. By now it was about 4pm so we headed to Johns Pizza for an early dinner/late lunch. One large plain pizza and four soft drinks cost only $22 plus tip! And the brick oven pizza was delicious. After ';linner'; we stopped at Toys R Us which was a mad house so it was hard to really look around, we decided to come back another time so we headed up to the Hershey Store. My 10 year old daughter is on a no sugar kick so she was delighted with her sugar free chocolate find. We stood in a looooong line to pay for her candy and also the $5 to put a message on the store marquis out front. It read, ';Kayleigh and Alexa love NYC!'; We hurried across the street for a photo of their names in lights. They loved it. We then walked to the American Girl place and made a modest purchase which is difficult in this particular store! Next, we happened upon the tree in Rockefeller Center which was huge and beautiful with the rink full of skaters below. Here we also saw the costumed characters such as Chicken little and Elmo but I had seen on the news that they are actually just panhandlers? Well off again to St Patricks which was breathtaking inside and out although it was dark so you couldn%26#39;t really see the stained glass very well. I wish we would have seen it during the day in all it%26#39;s glory. We then headed to FAO Schwartz where the children loved the life sized stuffed animals (especially the $15,000 elephant) and my husband took a photo of the ';Big'; piano where the employees were putting on a fab show. Then we dragged ourselves past Tiffany%26#39;s and to Central Park where we took a carriage ride through the park. We didn%26#39;t see much, especially at night, but we did see the ice skaters and the kids felt like princesses. We somehow walked back to the hotel and crashed. Hows that for day one??

Dec 24th subway fares were on special for $1 so we took the train to ground zero. It was quiet and somber but I%26#39;m glad we did it. Most people were respectful but there were some morons smiling like they were taking every day family photos. I will assume they just don%26#39;t know any better. We then walked to Battery Park and then over to the Staten Island Ferry for the free ride past the Statue of Liberty. The view was great and made for some great photos. We hopped on the subway back to Macy%26#39;s which was too crowded to move so left almost immediately. BTW, the subway was very easy for us newbies, the maps are very self expanatory. Anyway, we then walked over to Bryant Park and picked up a few items from the Holiday Market. The kids then wanted to ice skate which was free except the $7.50pp skate rental. It was the children%26#39;s first time but they took right to the ice and had a blast. I, however, turned 30 this year so I%26#39;ll blame that for my quick exhaustion but needless to say we didn%26#39;t stay very long! We saw the outside of the library next door and then walked back to Ollies Noodles for dinner. It was very good but I asked the waiter if it was family style and he said no so we ordered an entree each and had way too much food. Back to the hotel again with aching feet!

Dec 25th we walked to Grand Central for the laser show which was a complete joke, but the building was beautiful and we had brunch at Junior%26#39;s topped off with a famous slice of cheesecake...Yum. After re-entering times square we were approached by about the millionth vendor asking if we wanted a purse or watch. I broke down and bought a $20 bag (he asked $25) I know it%26#39;s controversial on this forum but if you do want one of these bags don%26#39;t think you have to go into some locked room with a stranger to get one. I could never have done that with my children with me. Maybe the quality is better in the ';back rooms'; but I live in Kentucky so I doubt anyone will notice or care that mine is not genuine. Okay, so now it started to rain so we bought a $5 umbrella and a $2.99 t-shirt in a souveneer shop and headed back to the hotel. We cleaned up, had a quick bite and headed to Hilton Theatre for a 6pm performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was a wonderful show, the sets were magnificent. Both the children and I loved it and hubby didn%26#39;t fall asleep so I guess that%26#39;s good. Back to the hotel again for some rest. Along the way we were suckered into getting a drawing of my 7 year old for $5. Well afterwards the artist shows you that it will smear with the slightest touch so you must buy the frame for an extra $20! She ended up giving us both the frame and picture for $20, what a bargain huh? Oh well lesson learned $5 is never $5 in times square : )

Dec 26th woke up to some stubborn drizzling rain but left early anyway and went across the street to Good Morning America. We were on tv for about a second.. woo hoo, we%26#39;re famous! Charlie Gibson was very friendly and made an extra effort to shake eveyone%26#39;s hand and say hello even when the cameras were long gone. The kid%26#39;s felt really special at their 2 seconds in the limelight : ) We then stopped at a couple of the shops that were too crowded to enjoy before and bought some last minute items. Crowne Limo picked us up at the hotel at 12:30pm for our 2:50pm flight. They were early in fact and arrived in a navy blue 6 passenger limo that I reserved for $39 plus tip thanks to this forum (you just have to mention you saw the ad in the travel magazine to get this rate) The driver took us over the Queens bridge so there was no toll and we got different scenery than when we arrived. So $50 for this leisurely ride versus $40 for the cab ride, I%26#39;ll gladly pay the extra $10 next time.

In summary we all had a great time. The weather was unseasonably warm which was great with all the walking we did. We only took the subway twice, to get to and from downtown. We never even had to take a cab besides from the airport. Everything was so convenient to the hotel. Next time the kids want to return in the Spring or Summer months to see more of Central park, Coney Island, some of your wonderful museums. That being said, we accomplished so much in our 4 day 3 night trip and fell in love with the city. If I ever win the lottery, look out, I%26#39;m coming to stay!

Thanks everyone on this forum for your wonderful advice, I%26#39;ll take you over my guidebooks anyday... well at least in conjunction with my books ; )

    WWE - Continental Arena

I only went once about 3 years back to see aerosmith. i took the continental arena bus from the port authority bus staion. I only remember being dropped off in a giant carpark to wait in line to get in the stadium. So unless things have changed since then, there%26#39;s nothing else to do when you%26#39;re there, no.

thanks - will get bus over earlyish to pick up will call tickets
