Buffalo Casino

The Buffalo Casino may be coming that much closer to a reality. It will be an interesting social experiment-Can a casino pull a struggling city out of it%26#39;s downward spiral? Will the Casino put the shine on the gems: like great neighbors, beautiful buildings, cultural hotspots, and a potential for waterfront development or will it suck the life from them. I am ever hopefull that other people will discover this great city.

Buffalo Casino

I heard the news about the Buffalo Casino....I was really hoping it would have came to Rochester instead. I think it will definately help the city. The newest Casino in Niagara Falls has totally changed that entire Fallsview area.

Buffalo Casino

It looks like the Casino will be going into the old D%26amp;L station. That is a bit of an icky area at the moment, so any development certainly can%26#39;t hurt the area.

I%26#39;m not sure how much it will help Buffalo overall. Our politcians have a history of squabbling like three year olds over everything and the Falls has done okay, but outside the immediate Casino area up there it%26#39;s still pretty dirty.

Everyone believes a casino will be the silver bullet that will pull buffalo out of it%26#39;s hole (and yes, we are in a MASSIVE hole). It%26#39;s every politican%26#39;s easy way out and green card to getting re-elected (except for those who are opposed to the casino on purely moral reasons).

But, i am sure it will provide only to plunge the city into another mess of stupidity, increase the already ridiculously high crime rates that hurt tourism, local businesses and city development.

What the city of Buffalo needs is to significantly downsize its staff (this isn%26#39;t a city of 800,000), restructure, and attract capital investment.

Contrary to popular belief, there is simply NO easy solution to the MESS our politicans (and those who put them in office) have created. Until the day comes that we completely rectify the situation that has come to being, Buffalo will never be the beautiful, progressive city it could be.

I couldn%26#39;t agree with you more.

I feel the same way about the Falls. I cringe whenever I look at the reviews of the Niagara Falls Hotels, we don%26#39;t have any that are above a 3 star, and they get horrible reviews.

In fact I considered writing a letter to Donald Trump asking him to do a combination apprentice/extreme makeover show, for the whole city.

I am not convinced of the value of the Casino, in fact I believe what the protestors are saying-it will not appeal to tourists so much as local people, and it will suck money from every other part of the local economy.

However, it is better than nothing. We have had nothing for a long time.

As every struggling city, rural area, etc., turns to a casino for salvation, casinos will become so commonplace that they are no longer going to be tourist draws (if in fact they are tourist draws today, which I%26#39;m not convinced of). They%26#39;ll draw some local people, who otherwise might%26#39;ve gone to a local restaurant, movie or live theater, etc., and that%26#39;s about it. A casino might be better than a hole in the ground but it%26#39;s no solution to deep-rooted problems.

I must express how much i agree with dave%26#39;s comments. Ten or Fifteen years ago, Casinos used to be limited to places such as Atlantic City and Las Vegas, w/a few others here and there--and that%26#39;s what made them so profitable, people were able to get away from their lives for some entertainment that they otherwise couldn%26#39;t get near their places of residency. Now, Casinos are popping up all over the country: it seems these days, every community wants to solve their problems with casinos. And, i do think that Casinos are becoming so common place for Americans, that they are starting to lose their glitz and appeal that they had years ago. Moreover, what does this say about our moral beliefs as a city, as a region, and as a nation, if we believe that all of our problems can be solved through casino gambling, instead of intensive hard work and community resolute to rid corruption and work towards a common goal of economic prosperity?

BUT if we must have a casino built, then let%26#39;s have it in the city, NOT in cheektowaga.

Agreed?

As someone who%26#39;s lived in other cities and countries, it%26#39;s very difficult for me to see the city and region get caught in the lines of politics and get seduced by the idea of casino gambling. In actuality, Buffalo has every asset a city could want: an educated population (one major university and at least 5 four year colleges in the immediate area), excellent infrastructure, and the list goes on and a high standard of living. But yet we waste these excellent tools because we desire the easy way out.

Buffalo casino is no answer out, maybe it is a drop of water in a desert, but i see it only as a waste of paper, time, brain power, electricity, and tax payers%26#39; dollars. It%26#39;s a perfect political tool for the recycled career politicians-keeps them on the payroll longer without doing any sort of work and without ';disturbing'; any interest or political group.

I will always be a Buffalonian at heart, and i will always love the city where i was born and i consider my home, but unfortunately i find myself unable to be proud of this place i love so much. I always find myself defending the beautiful city that i love, instead of lauding it. And unfortunately, very soon I will become part of the growing band of people exiting the area, as i have to move someplace else (out of state more than likely) because of the depressing economic landscape here, which will provide me with little opprotunity when i graduate.

Bass Pro WILL change Buffalo, not a casino.

Everywhere they go, the effect is astounding. Any developer sitting on money should jump on plane and just wander around their HQ place, blocks in any direction. And try the Same at Cabella%26#39;s out in Nebraska...you%26#39;ll race back to Buffalo and start investing...quickly.

Casinos are now part of an American fabric. Look at every major city in Canada, each has a casino in or nearby. The point of casinos social/economic effects on a region are moot for Buffalo because Buffalo has had a casino for over ten years and it is only separated from Buffalo by a easily traveled border. Lets face it, Niagara Falls and Fort Erie are basically suburbs of Buffalo. The ecomonics of casinos have already pulled investment away from Buffalo and Americans have been pouring money into Canada for years. We need to compete. Look at Niagara Falls today as opposed to 15 years ago. Thier side was a dump too until the casino sparked investment. Has the Senecas investing close to 300 million dollars into NF hurt. Did it affect the local business.???..there are no local businesses!!!! Does anyone really think that a Buffalo Casino will hurt the Chippewa, Allentown and Elmwood scene? Come on..Like buffalogirl states...it may add shine to the plethora of regional assets Buffalo has. We are not Biloxi or Atlantic City. We have alot to start with, and like it or not Buffalo is already a tourist attraction...our location is a key asset. etc. etc.
