Early Riser

My wife and I will be at the Michaelangelo 1/4-1/8. Many posts deal with safety, and I%26#39;m happy to hears from you native New Yorkers that the streets are ok in New York. However, I am cursed with an early morning alarm clock. I usually awaken between 4:30AM and 5:30AM. My wife is a more normal sleeper, so I usually find things to do while she sleeps. There are a few coffee shops close to the Michaelangelo and I wanted to get the thoughts from you about how safe a stroll that time of day would be.

Early Riser

Extremely safe.

Early Riser

I should add that I love walking around Manhattan in the early morning hours when it is not so crowded and hectic yet.

There%26#39;s a French Braserie called Maison on 55 st and 7th ave. that%26#39;s open 24/7 that would be a bit nicer than a coffee shop. ;) It%26#39;s safe but as we say, in any city just be aware of your surroundings. That%26#39;s a fun time to go downtown and maybe take a ride on the Staten Island ferry if it%26#39;s not too freezing.

I have the same feelings as Iddy the previous writer. The sunrise is splendid and especially when your not in a big crowd. Smell the fresh baked bread at the cafes etc...

Take a jogg through central park if your intothat sort of thing.

Thanks all....I am 56 and been through 2 back surgeries, so jogging is out. I do swim 1/2 mile 4 days a week, but the east river is probably too cold....I%26#39;ll miss my YMCA

There are a few public pools around, but I don%26#39;t think any open 24/7. You can also get daily passes at the YMCA as well if you want to get a swim in.

I see there is a YMCA less than a mile from the Michaelangelo. I will call them and see if my membership is good there. And what time they open. According to my info, they have 2 pools.

Maison is actually on 53rd, not 55th. I agree that it would be a wonderful early morning possibility.

The Vanderbilt Y on East 47th Street does indeed have two pools and opens about 5 AM. You should inquire about whether your local membership would be honored there. Also, before you go there to swim, check to make sure one or both of the pools is actually available for laps at the time you intend to go. They block out certain periods for classes, etc.

  • Most straightforward way to get from Newark airport to...

    Hi!

First time poster, and first time traveller to the USA. I will be staying close to Penn station, and will be flying in to Newark airport. What is the simplest and most priceworthy way for 3 adults to get into town?

From my own research I see that a buss is about a third of the cost of a taxi, and takes twice as long, would that be about right?

Do I need to book a taxi in advance or can I hail a cab there? If I book will they be standing somewhere with a sign? Is there anything I need to think about otherwise?

Any and all advice for a first time traveller is gladly received, especially on getting to and from Newark!

Most straightforward way to get from Newark airport to...

Take the train into Penn Station. See this link:

    airtrainnewark.com/airtrainnewark/index.html

Most straightforward way to get from Newark airport to...

Took me a little while to make sense of the websites, but that seems like a very good alternative. Can I check that it is an NYTransit ticket I would need to buy once I have used the AirTrain to get to the EWR rail-station? I can get NYT or Amtrak, but Amtrak seems to be out-of-town trips?

Am I right in thinking I can take a train straight to Penn or do I need to transfer in some manner?

And I guess I must still be missunderstanding as looking at fares on the njtransit site tells me it would be 14 dollars per person one way, in other words about the same price as a cab for 3 people?

The taxi should be $45 + tolls (NJ Turnpike %26amp; Lincoln Tunnel) + tip + $5 (only weekends or certain times on weekdays) = $60 or $65

    www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrtaxizones.htm

The NJ Transit train fare is $14/person one-way.

    Amtrak is $28/person one-way.

The Olympia Trails bus is $22/person round-trip or $13/person one-way.

    http://www.coachusa.com/ss.airport.asp

I%26#39;d pick the bus unless you knew for sure that there was major traffic congestion at the Lincoln Tunnel in which case I%26#39;d take the train. But you have no way of knowing this when you arrive.

Oh, with the train you take the monorail aka Airtrain to the train station. Depending which NJ Transit train you get on, it will be either 1 or 2 more stops before you get to NYC Penn Station. No changing of trains required.

The absolutely easiest way to get to Penn Station is the Olympia Trails bus. I%26#39;ve arrived and departed at all different hours and used the bus numerous times without delays or problems. Do a search here on Olympia and read all about it.

I took the Airtrain, etc. last year and it was a lot more complicated. If you have a lot of luggage, definitely choose the bus.

Where is the camera at in Time Square? Also, I will be arriving tomorrow around 3:00P.M. where is the best place to eat near the Roosevelt Hotel? I like steak, pasta, and good pizza.

    tbaxley,

I will be traveling to New York for New Years and staying at the Roosevelt. Please let me know how it is and any good restraunts as well. thanks

    gibson2,

A friend of mine has stayed at the Roosevelt three times and she has been pleased every time. I will be glad to give you any information when I get back. I should be back on the 19th, so check back on the forum around the 20th.

    Hi there,

Just back from the Roosevelt, found a really lovely bar/restaurant just a stones throw away. When you come out the front door, take a right and cross over at the lights and keep walking for about 100 yards and you%26#39;ll see a place called Eamonn%26#39;s, we ate there a few times, and between duck, rack of lamb, yummy pasta with prawns, it%26#39;s just fab and it%26#39;s very reasonable too. Further on up the road and accross the other side of the road is a place called Connolly%26#39;s, we didn%26#39;t eat there but were advised to by other people we met also staying in our hotel. Have a wonderful trip !

Thanks Trinity for the information. We will be sure to check both restaurants out.

    gibson2,

If you do not mind me asking, what part of Tennesse are you from? We always go to Gatlinburg and Maggie Valley for two weeks in September!!!

I currently live in Nashville, but graduated from the University of Tennessee. Im real familiar with that area of the Mountains, if you need any help

I will take a look at Eamonn%26#39;s and Connolly%26#39;s. I also will be staying at Roosevelt Hotel, and will have plenty of time to eat. My wife is attending class at Redken 5th Ave which last I think 8 hours a day for 6 straight days. So I need plenty of good locations in that area for dining.

Also if you need any help with the Gatlinburg, TN area let me know. I lived in that area all my life so ask away. If you haven%26#39;t already book a place to stay I know of a very nice log home community to stay in.

JFK to Manhattan - Tel Aviv or Carmel Transporation?

Would anyone tell me which is better, Tel Aviv or Carmel, to use as an airport transportation from JFK to Manhattan? Or Aiport taxi better? Thanks in advance.

JFK to Manhattan - Tel Aviv or Carmel Transporation?

I always use Carmel and have never had a problem with them, from my experience. Whether it is better than Tel Aviv, could not say.

JFK to Manhattan - Tel Aviv or Carmel Transporation?

I have used Carmel a few times and find them really bad.For the past few years i use Tel- Aviv who i have always found reliable, prompt %26amp; courteous %26amp; very reasonable.

we used carmel cars and the cars themselves were clean and fine one was a 6 seater the other was larger due to the amount of bags we had.

both slightly mad russian men (I think) but they turned up at the hotel to pick us up bang on time to the minute on the first day of the transit strike so in my mind that was real good. Yes they were a bit late getting us from the airport but we were in a major hurry and our plane had taken an hour delay so I think that was part of it.

We used Carmel twice to get to the airport while we were there. (we took an overnight trip to Madison to see a concert).

Both times the two different drivers were there waiting for us about 10 minutes early.

    Nice cars, and friendly drivers.

As for better than Tel Aviv I can%26#39;t comment as haven%26#39;t used.

Just let me add that all of these cars, from both companies, are independently owned %26amp; operated, so the quality is the luck of the draw.

    Embassy Suites Hotel

Hi everyone and Happy New Year! I think it%26#39;s safe to say I%26#39;m officially addicted to this forum. You all have been such an inspiration that I have decided to change my summer vacation plans of a 2 day stop in NYC then onto Cape Cod, to coming to NYC for 6 days instead. I%26#39;m now considering the Embassy Suites since the reviews are so good and the price is reasonable. However, I am somewhat concerned about the location. Is it really out away from everything? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Embassy Suites Hotel

I am glad you are excited about your trip. The question you asked tho will get many varied replies. It really depends on what you want and what you consider important. It sounds like a great place and my friends enjoyed it. The downside was having to take the subway or cabs to most places other than downtown area. But they liked going to the quiet area at night and didn%26#39;t venture out much. I%26#39;ve been 3 times and prefer paying a bit more and being close to the excitement. It%26#39;s nice to be able to walk to the theaters, Rockefeller Center, 5th Ave., ESB, Central Park, etc., especially if you don%26#39;t want to take up the whole day or people split up for a few hours. I don%26#39;t go to NYC for quiet at night, I have that at home...lol. I go for the vibrancy, people, sights and sounds. Especially if it is your first visit, it seems to make more sense to be in the midtown/theater area. Now of course if you are going for different reasons, then do what will make you most comfortable.

    Embassy Suites Hotel

Im in the hotel right now - really nice suite overlooking the Hudson. Hotel is ace.

Easy to get about - just jump in a cab or a subway if we%26#39;re heading up to Times Sq etc....

    I%26#39;d recommend it.

we stayed there a few weeks ago and it has amazing views and you feel like you get a breath of fresh air down there!

We came the week before xmas and midtown was heaving and it really is nice to get away from the crowds at night. Last time we stayed at the crowne plazza and my head felt wonky after a few days like I needed space if you know what I mean and I am someone who loves busy busy cities etc.

If you have small kids it can be a bit of a pain getting the stroller up and down the subway etc but to be honest it wasnt so bad.

I think in the summer it would be lovely downtown in the evenings I found it relaxing just wandering around downtown a bit more!

it is fab for the cost and the breakfast is lovely!

    Affinia Dumont vs Benjamin

I%26#39;ve narrowed it down to these two hotels - has anyone stayed in both? If so, which would you recommend for first time visitors? Appreciate you thoughts.

    Affinia Dumont vs Benjamin

I havent stayed at either, but I have stayed at the Affinia 50 (which was lovely) right next to the Benjamin which I think is in an excellent location. Safe, central and easy walking distance to lots of attractions.

    Affinia Dumont vs Benjamin

I would agree with tripgirl that I%26#39;d have a preference for the location of the Benjamin, but many tourists like the location of the Aff. Manhattan which is a bit closer to Times Square. I just prefer NOT being so close to Times Square and having less touristy dining options. The Benjamin is a short walk, cab ride or bus ride from the theater district/Times Square. Don%26#39;t know if you realize they%26#39;re both owned by the same co.

The Benjamin is suppposed to be a posher hotel than the others in the Affinia group in terms of service and style, but most of the other Affinia hotels have now been renovated more recently than the Benjamin so I have heard complaints of worn carpets/furniture etc. at the Benjamin. If you read the first review listed here, they complain about poor temperature control in the room, a common problem in some of the older buildings.

The Affinia 50 would also be my first choice in terms of room size and location, but the Benjamin is right near it if you prefer that. The Kimberly is another all suite hotel right near there too that people like. You will enjoy any of these that you choose. ;)

Daft question - whats the cover charge???

We hope to go to a comedy club while we%26#39;re in NY but I%26#39;m not sure about the entrance fee.

the websites say things like sunday-thursday 10dollar cover plus 2 item minimum.

Does this mean that you have to pay 10 dollars to get in and then have to buy at least 2 drinks?

How do they know if you%26#39;ve bought two drinks or not? is it all waitress service?

sorry to ask an obvious question but I%26#39;ve never come across this before and just want to be sure

    thanks

Daft question - whats the cover charge???

It%26#39;s not a daft question and you%26#39;re not the first to ask it. Yes, the cover is equivalent to an entrance fee but it usually appears on your drink/food check rather than being collected at the door. A 2 drink minimum is usually the language and yes, it%26#39;s waitress service so they keep track. The drinks don%26#39;t have to be alcoholic, btw. Soft drinks count too. ;)

  • Top of the Rock AND Empire State Building?

Our tour includes Top of the Rock so I%26#39;m wondering if it would be a must to go to the Empire State Building too? Or would our time be better spent seeing something different? I was thinking about doing ESB our 1st night but would you suggest doing something else (cheap)? It will be me and my 2 teenage boys staying at Milford Plaza this summer on a group tour with plenty of free time.

I%26#39;m so happy to have found this forum. I do tons of research but the advice/tips/personal experience found on boards is priceless. Thanks for your help.

    Jen

Top of the Rock AND Empire State Building?

Though the views are slightly different, you don%26#39;t need to do both and the time can be spent to see the many other things.

Top of the Rock AND Empire State Building?

How many days will you be here, and what else is on the agenda?

Thanks, I was hoping to save my time %26amp; money by not having to do both if the experts agreed they were both too similar to have to do ESB also. I don%26#39;t have the full itinerary yet but here%26#39;s what I know. We%26#39;re flying from WI late morning/early afternoon (don%26#39;t have times yet) and staying 6 nights.

Monday: arrive at LaGuardia, meet local tour guide who will give us an welcome introduction on our coach to the hotel. Evening free to enjoy as we wish (Times Square, 5th ave? not sure what would be a good 1st night activity)

Tuesday full day of touring by motorcoach includes Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, South Seaport, Ground zero, Financial District, Greenwich Village, SoHo and walking tour of Chinatown %26amp; Little Italy with included dinner. Evening is free

Wed: Free day to use the included all loops 2 day double decker hopper pass. Tonight%26#39;s show Producers

Thursday: Free day to use bus pass. Tonight%26#39;s show Hairspray

Friday: Touring by foot or subway includes Times Square, Stage door tour at Radio City, Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Center, %26amp; St Patrick%26#39;s Cathedral. Afternoon Circle Line ferry 3 hour cruise. Night; an evening illumination tour with our guide.

Saturday: Free morning. Afternoon matinee of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Free evening

Sunday: Fly home with lots of great memories.

So far I%26#39;ve come up with this list of things to do in our free time: Start free days with a full loop tour and go back to anything we want to see more of (not sure of what stops it makes still researching), Central Park, Grand Central Station, 5th ave window shopping, walk across Brooklyn Bridge (sunset? maybe on last day after the matinee) %26amp; maybe a museum (not high on my priority but probably natural history if time). Fit in time for souvenir shopping. Eating at quick and cheap venders, delis, cafes.

    Comments %26amp; suggestions welcome, Jen

If you and the family enjoy Top of the Rock, and want another bird%26#39;s eye view, then by all means, go to the ESB the next evening. It would be interesting to get a night view of the city.

...otherwise, sounds like a great trip, and you already have great ideas on what to do.

During your free time, go back to Greenwich Village, esp St. Marks Place and Bleecker Street. Do your teens like sci-fi/role playing/fantasy/comics? Go to Forbidden Planet on 12th St. and Broadway.

Visiting In September for Yankees Game

I know it%26#39;s early but I like to plan ahead. My husband and I are planning a trip in September and are looking at the Novotel. I read it%26#39;s close to the subway and that%26#39;s how we are planning to get to the game. Should I look into something else. We want a 3 star hotel and close to Times Square. Thanks for any suggestions. It%26#39;s our first time.

Visiting In September for Yankees Game

I don%26#39;t know much about hotels (since I don%26#39;t stay in them because I live here. Haha.), but I do have advice about the subway and Tmies Square.

It%26#39;s perfectly ok NOT to stay in Times Square. TS is full of tourists, and you might have a more intersting and in-depth experience staying in another neighborhood.

Everything in Manhattan is so close (within a short walk or a short subway ride), that you don%26#39;t need to stay right next to TS.

To get to Yankee Stadium you need to do is find the #4, D or B trains. These take you directly to the Stadium. If you stay on the Upper West Side, for example, you%26#39;ll be very close to the B and D. If you stay at the Hyatt at Grand Central, you%26#39;ll be near the #4. Or you can stay in TS and walk to the B and D at 42ndSt. /6th Ave at Bryant Park.

Bascially, don%26#39;t let being near TS tie you down.

I see you%26#39;re from upstate (beautiful area!) Get a good map and see how close and convenient everything is. Personally, I love the Not For Tourists guides. A wonderful ';little black book'; that has everything you need to know.

Thanks for your advice. It was very helpful.

    Using cabs...

I drive everywhere here in Texas, never have use for cabs. From the airport to the hotel, is it enough to say the hotel name or do you tell them The Sofitel on 44th Street? or the complete address, 45 West 44th Street? Thank you

    Using cabs...

It is always best to give the name of the place, the address, and the cross streets if you know them, such as ';the Brooks Brothers store, 666 Fifth Avenue, between 53rd and 52nd Street.'; If you do not know the cross streets, just say the name of the place and the address. It is rarely enough to say the name of the hotel, or the restaurant, or the theater, although once in a while you will find a cabbie who speaks fairly good English and who knows the city relatively well, and who will not need the address of something fairly well known (such as Penn Station.)

I realize the need to take a cab from the airport, but I do hope you plan on using the subway whenever possible during your stay - faster, cheaper, and much safer than a cab...

    Using cabs...

Cabbies don%26#39;t want the address of where you%26#39;re going, they want a street (44th)and cross street(s) (between 5th %26amp; 6th).

Nywhiz, I agree, and that is how I would do it myself -- but for those who are visiting and only know a place from the address in the telephone book or on the website, the address is the next best thing to actual cross streets. In any case, the point was that one should not just say ';Cafe Gotham'; or ';the Old Merchant%26#39;s House Museum'; and expect the cabbie to know where it is just from the name.

Since the question has come up though, I think it%26#39;s worth explaining to people that the cab drivers are not as knowledgeable as you would expect. Therefore, it%26#39;s a good idea to KNOW the street and cross streets of your destination. For example, on your hotel, if it doesn%26#39;t say on the website what the cross streets are, look on a map so you know. If you%26#39;re looking up restaurants on menupages, they tell you what the cross streets are at the bottom of the listing. The Zagat guide also gives cross streets.

So, if I were going to the Sofitel, I would tell the cab driver 44th between 5th %26amp; 6th. When we got to the st. or near it, I%26#39;d say I%26#39;m going to the Sofitel, or it%26#39;s number 45.

At times, if a street is going in the wrong direction, the driver might ask ';do you want me to go around the block?'; (For example, from JFK, 44th st. goes the wrong way). If I had a lot of luggage, I%26#39;d say please drop me in front. If not, I%26#39;d say no, I can get out at 5th. Just a heads up.

As I got in a cab where the driver didn%26#39;t know how to get to Battery Park, I would go prepared with your own map ready to direct him if necessary.

    Should have added

    ';From outside Macy%26#39;s';

    lol!

    4 females: 2 in their 50s, 2- 21 yr olds, first time...

We are planning a trip for September 2006 for my daughter%26#39;s 21st birthday. I am thinking of staying at the Radio City Apts or Salisbury for a long weekend thurs - sun. Are either of these better located for first time visitors who want to visit the tourist areas. Any help with suggestions for activities for 2 21 yr old girls who are not too interested in museums would be appreciated. Also help with bars, etc in the area that would be fun for their first experience as 21 yr olds. Thank for any advice. Gerrie Shopping suggestions?

    4 females: 2 in their 50s, 2- 21 yr olds, first time...

I would say those 2 hotels are very similar. Radio City Apartments is close to Rockefeller Center and to H %26amp; M, a popular shop for their age. Salisbury is a bit closer to Central Park. If the 4 of you are planning to share 1 room, I%26#39;d say pay attention to whichever will give you the space and bed configuration you want as location is not dramatically different. I%26#39;ve noticed cheaper prices for the Salisbury on quikbook.com so doublecheck price before booking.

    What is Gerrie shopping????

    4 females: 2 in their 50s, 2- 21 yr olds, first time...

I know that Radio City Apts. gets rave reviews. But honestly, of the two, I really like the Salisbury%26#39;s location better. It%26#39;d be good to hear from someone who%26#39;s stayed at both, but to me the Salisbury has a classier look. Plus, in September you%26#39;d want to be nearer to the park.

I%26#39;ll take a stab and say ';gerrie shopping'; is for the two older ladies, as in geriatric, but 50 isn%26#39;t THAT old !! If I%26#39;m wrong, please accept apologies. lol

Sorry Gerrie is my name. The shoping suggestions question was an afterthought. Should have used a period. Just wondering about shopping suggestions for the 21 yr olds. Thanks for all the info. Gerrie.

Oops, sorry, Gerrie, it wasn%26#39;t meant as an insult. Have a fabulous trip, and have fun planning.

Since the Salisbury has been mentioned in several posts this morning, just thought I%26#39;d mention that one of my favorite hotel websites quikbook.com often has prices for the Salisbury that are cheaper than the hotel%26#39;s own website but it may require prepayment. Since you have quite a bit of time til next Sept., you might want to sign up for email specials from the hotel on their own website.

I%26#39;ll also mention that a great all suite hotel is the Affinia 50 and you might want to check that one as well. It%26#39;s generally pricier than the 2 you mentioned but there are sometimes specials there as well. It%26#39;s very near Bloomingdales and some other good shopping destinations.

For 21 yr old shopping, H %26amp; M should be at the top of the list and they have several locations, one right near RAdio City apts., one near Bloomingdales, one near Macy%26#39;s.

DSW is a discount shoe store (part of a national chain) that has a store near Union Square.

Top Shop is an English store that recently opened downtown in NYC.

nymetro.com is the NY Magazine website. They have a pretty good search engine for shopping. They also have a good guide for finding cheap anything (fashion, food, etc.)here

    nymetro.com/cheap

dailycandy.com is a good website for fashion info and stores. ;)

If your girls are energetic shoppers and really want bargains, go to Century 21. They do have terrific prices.

    Hotel For March! Help!

    Hello everyone, happy new year.

My girlfriend and I will be returning to New York in March this year and cant wait, we dont have major amounts of money for the hotel we have managed to find flights for 拢500 in total for both us from Ba, which is good. But now we are looking for a hotel, we were going to book the Radio City Apartments for a week 22nd 29 March but when i checked it said it unavailable but we still are looking for a hotel in the same price range so can guys help out?

we are wanting to go for a week or so and pay around $1400 (拢750ish) for the hotel we can be a bit flexible with it but not to much!

    Hotel For March! Help!

The Salisbury has a rate of $179/night on their own website for your dates.

    nycsalisbury.com

Other options I%26#39;d consider from quikbook.com

The Excelsior (upper west side lovely hotel) $154/night

Shelburne Murray Hill studio suite $179/night

    Hotel For March! Help!

Thankyou for the reply! ill check them out in a bit, stayed at the Raddison Lexington last time which was ok i suppose but dont want to go back.

Thankyou for the reply! ill check them out in a bit, stayed at the Raddison Lexington last time which was ok i suppose but dont want to go back.

By all accounts the Radisson Lexington is not very good. Any of these will be MILES better. I should have also mentioned that I have sometimes seen better (ie less expensive) prices for the Salisbury on quikbook.com than on the Salisbury%26#39;s own website. Sure enough, there%26#39;s a rate of $148/night for the Salisbury on quikbook for your dates while on the hotel%26#39;s own website the only option I got was the $179. The $179 is for a king bed, while the $148 is for a ';standard queen or 2 doubles.'; It doesn%26#39;t make clear the size of the room on either website. If you want the cheapest rate possible, go with the quikbook rezzie but it requires pre-payment so you can%26#39;t really cancel.

Have you discovered hotwire.com? They don%26#39;t tell you the hotel name until after you%26#39;ve paid but they will list hotel rating (stars) and facilities. See www.betterbidding.com for an idea what the hotel might be and be brave!

We%26#39;ve just got the Barclay Intercontinental for $170 per night compared to their advertised rate of $295. Have used hotwire in London, Birmingham, Paris, Chicago, Las Vegas and now New York and got amazing value each time!

Mount Royal Hotel Hostel - decent or not?

My husband and I are spending 4 nights in NY as part of a trip across the USA taht we%26#39;re doing in Aug-Sept 2006. The accomodation in NY is so expensive, that we%26#39;re considering the hostel-style lodgings, but with rooms with private bathrooms. I have read the reviews of the Mount Royal Hotel which seem very mixed. We can accept %26#39;basic%26#39; accomodation given the price, but are the rooms clean and quiet and is the location handy %26amp; safe? Also, do they have mini-fridges in the rooms? Thanks!

Mount Royal Hotel Hostel - decent or not?

Based on the reviews posted here including headlines like ';worst hotel ever'; and ';dirty and disgusting'; I can%26#39;t imagine why you%26#39;d consider this. The Hostel International (HI) seems to be the preferred hostel in Manhattan but I%26#39;m not sure it has private rooms. There are two ';Y';s (YMCAs) that have private rooms that get not bad reviwews, the Westside Y and the Vanderbilt Y. Both are listed here. hostelz.com is another website to check for hostels and reviews.

There are also several b %26amp; bs and hotels, some with shared bath facilities that get good reviews. Second Home on Second is a

b %26amp; b with both ensuite and shared bath options.

Finally, there are some apartment options that might meet your budget. citylightsnewyork.com has a ';hosted'; apartment program where you stay in someone%26#39;s apartment but get your own bedroom and sometimes bathroom for I think about the same price as a private room in a hostel.

newyork.craigslist.com is a website where people list vacation rentals (among other things) and rooms to let. Just realize there is no way to know for sure what sort of experience you%26#39;ll have doing it that way.

At that time of year, make sure wherever you stay has air conditioning. It can still be very hot. If you can manage up to $120/night, you might want to make a reservation that%26#39;s cancellable and consider bidding for a room on Priceline. People are often able to stay at top hotels like the NY Hilton or the Grand Hyatt for $100-120/night plus tax (remember none of our prices here include tax). If you%26#39;re not familiar with Priceline, you absolutely should get to be as it could yield you wonderful hotel rooms on a cross country trip. Betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com

are websites that explain the bidding ins and outs. Betterbidding is a bit friendlier but both give good information and advice and will even help you strategize a bid.

Mount Royal Hotel Hostel - decent or not?

The only thing good about the Mount Royal is its neighborhood on the Upper West Side. You may want to look at the Newton which is a short distance from the Mount Royal, is much, much better and has some less expensive rooms that have shared baths.

The Newton Hotel is on the Upper West side on Broadway and 95th Street. It gets good reviews, especially for value. It is in a safe residential neighborhood with close by shops and good moderately priced restaurants. It is one block from the subway which can get you to midtown in 10 minutes and most anywhere in Manhattan in 30 minutes.

  • How do you get to Brooklyn...

How do you get to the River Cafe in Brooklyn from 44th street and 5th avenue? Is the ride and restaurant pricey? Dress Code?

How do you get to Brooklyn...

There are four ways to get there:

    1) Hail a taxi in Manhattan, and go to the River Cafe (be warned, many cabbies do NOT know how to get there.)

    2) Take the subway to Borough Hall in Brooklyn and catch a cab there - cheaper than the above, and slightly better chance the cabbie can find Front Street in Brooklyn.

    3) Take the subway to High Street, and walk the five blocks or so down the hill. Cheapest of all, but not recommended in rain or snow.

    4) Depending on the time of day, go to Pier 11 near Wall Street and take the water taxi over the river.

How do you get to Brooklyn...

Restaurant is pricey. For more detailed info and dress code go to their website

    rivercafe.com

re #2 for greenwhiteblue - there isn%26#39;t a snowball%26#39;s chance in hell of you getting a taxi at Borough Hall in Brooklyn - yellow cabs simply do not ply their trade in Brooklyn - so don%26#39;t even think of trying to get a cab while in Brooklyn.

Other than the subway your best bet is to get a car service to and from.

You can combine this with your walk over the Brooklyn Bridge if that was ever on the list of things to do. It%26#39;s not far from the end of the bridge.

    Hi

I agree with LTT, car service is the way to go if you%26#39;re not taking the subway (which involves a walk at the end to reach the restaurant)...this way the price is pre-determined %26amp; your driver will know the destination (specify this to the car service company - it%26#39;s their job to provide directions if the driver doesn%26#39;t know...however, this being said I always take along the address/phone number of the destination in the car as back-up). Taxi%26#39;s can run up a huge fare if there%26#39;s traffic on the bridge, or if they take a wrong turn - a lot of us Brooklyn-dwellers use car service. River Cafe can help you arrange for car service back to the city as well (some queue up in their parking lot). It is a pretty restaurant w/an amazing view...enjoy your trip.

Re livetotravel%26#39;s comment -- it is true that yellow cabs do not ordinarily work in Brooklyn. However, people do take cabs to Brooklyn, and the cabs head back for the bridges. One has very little chance of finding a yellow cab in Park Slope, for example, but one can easily find one on the streets of Downtown Brooklyn/Brooklyn Heights that lead to the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges -- including near the Borough Hall subway station. Anyone who needs a cab in the city could find few better places to catch one than, say, the end of Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights where it turns into Tillary -- and cabs can regularly be gotten on Adams Street.

For most of Brooklyn, however, it is very true to say that you will find a flamingo on the street more easily than you will find a yellow cab.

    trip report part 2

I%26#39;m tapping in and out of my report so hope you can follow ok.

Tuesday 20Dec - Potential disaster - the Transport strike!! Luckily our pre-booked

S ex and the City tour wasn%26#39;t cancelled. It was FANTASTIC. Our guide was Lisa, and having done the tours before, I was pleased that she wasn%26#39;t too serious. Very funny girl, kept the coach party amused with anecdotes and info.

It lasted 3.5 hours so we got to see a lot of Manhattan, from the Plaza hotel, thru Tiffany%26#39;s, downtown to the Flatiron building and Greenwich where SJP lives and around the Magnolia bakery to try cupcakes. Not from the Magnolia but the same recipe. Photos taken at %26#39;Carrie%26#39;s stoop%26#39;. Also had a cosmo coctail in O%26#39;Neil%26#39;s. It was great.

Went from there to the Rockafeller Centre to watch the ice skaters, had an inexpensive but very tasty Chinese snack at the Rockafeller Centre and went to top of rock, using the voucher from Cazpiece (thank you!) and even tho we were freezing, we got some fantastic photos of New York at night.

By this time it was around 8pm and we met another friend who brought us to the White Rabbit bar in the Village.

A gorgeous, I mean gorgeous!!! barman served us cocktails (virgin cosmo for daughter) and the roaring fire and great music added to the atmosphere.

The owner is pure New York, good looking, funny and very very hospitable.

Had dinner around the corner, can%26#39;t remember the name of the restaurant, great steak tho, and were close to the cafe of the When Harry Met Sally scene (you know the scene???.

Back to the hotel for a late night coffee. A little spoiled by the surly attitude of the barman. The only member of staff to be rude in our hotel.

Wednesday 21st Dec - Strike still on though I have to say that although most of folks working in the various tourist attractions and stores would have had difficulty getting to work, they remained up beat and there was very little complaining. I have lived through strikes here......... very different.

Anyway, went on the Manhattan tv and movie tour. Although this was ok, I would have liked more info on the old classic movies set in NY. Apart from that another cheap tour (拢20) and totally worth the money - you get to see so much of the city, and if you are interested in tv and movies, it really adds to the trip.

After the trip however, disaster struck. Daughter took sick. Stomach bug that left her unable to go ice skating in the Rockafeller Centre. Nothing and I mean nothing would stop her from the Knicks game in Madison Square Garden though. Poor thing yelling %26#39;Knicks!! Beugh! Knicks! Beugh! Without being graphic, she had nothing in her stomach so it wasn%26#39;t as gory as it sounds!!

Late dinner had to be cancelled as she just wanted to get to bed after the game. So my friend and I had a drink at our hotel bar. My goodness what is in absolute?? Three of them and I was talking like a washing machine on the spin cycle!!!

    More to follow

    trip report part 2

    That%26#39;s wonderful! Great report.

Sorry to hear about daughter losing her cupcakes. I%26#39;m sure no one batted an eyelash at the Knicks game. Did anyone offer her some ginger ale at least? Did she enjoy the game anyway?

    ';What%26#39;s in Absolute?'; LOL!

    trip report part 2

The virus your daughter had is going around!! We just had two days of exhaustion, headaches, stopped-up systems, and bowling ball bellies! If you can%26#39;t withstand the blockage, it%26#39;s gotta get out somehow. We both just over it, a friend got it last week, and now we just got a call from someone else with it.

We feel her pain. Poor kid, what a trooper!

    Which terminal at JFK?

    Happy New Year Everyone!

OK, we leave on Wednesday and the panic has just set in as I haven%26#39;t really organised anything, just collected vague ideas!

Once I started to think about the travel arrangements I realised I don%26#39;t know which terminals I%26#39;m travelling in and out of at Heathrow and JFK. I have an e-ticket (email confirmation from American Airlines) that only gives flight number and time.

Other half believes we fly out of Terminal 3 at Heathrow, but I can%26#39;t find any info on which Termainl to go to at JFK for the return flight. Can anyone help?

Sorry if this is all obvious, it%26#39;s my first long haul flight and I%26#39;m starting to feel giddy with nerves! (nothing to do with the champagne that I%26#39;ve been supping since lunch! ;) )

    Greef

    Which terminal at JFK?

AA indeed does fly from terminal 3 in Heathrow and from terminal 8 at JFK. Don%26#39;t worry. The taxi drivers should know, and if not, there are signs all over the road into the airport.

Stop worrying so much - it%26#39;ll be fine :)

    Which terminal at JFK?

    Thanks Iddev!

I have just been overwhelmed with all xmas/new year celebrations, visiting relative etc that I only really remembered the fact that we%26#39;re going away today when we finally got back home. I think I will spend tomorrow writing lists and all the travel info down so I can calm down a bit!

Just go to American airlines web site and you can check out your flight details. They also have an office in london. On the web site you can get the phone numbers for all their international offices.

    www.aa.com

    Dont worry,be happy.

I did try the AA website (both the US one and UK) but found it hard to navigate when trying to find detailed information, and not that user-friendly. I hope that isn%26#39;t indicative of their service in general!

yep T3 for AA at heathrow and the horrid T8 at JFK, dont expect to do any duty free shopping on the way back as it is one small shop with not a lot in it unless it has been revamped in the past 2 years.

On the other hand after T8, T7 the united and BA terminal pleasently surprised me.

Fellow VW Polo Driver...... Hope you have a really good time in New York and that everything goes according to plan and that the weather is good etc etc etc!

    Grand Hyatt

Anybody stayed here? what did you think of it?

I have seen some good reviews and somebody mentions it is worth getting the gold passport card which can get you upgrades. Anybody know what this is and how we can get it?

    Thanks.

    Grand Hyatt

The Grand Hyatt is a wonderful place to stay. It is next to Grand Central Station.

The gold passport is akin to a frequent flyer program(me). See http://www.hyatt.com for details.

    Taxi's - How much?

How much will it cost from JFK to Penn Station?

How much do I tip and will there be any tolls?

    Taxi's - How much?

Beg_mun - all your recent questions can be answered by searching this forum. Taxi fares, airports and various modes of transport to-and-from are discussed here constantly and repeatedly.

I%26#39;d recommend that everyone who has these questions search this forum for words like taxi, ';how much';, JFK, ';flat rate'; or ';flat fare'; for more info.

There%26#39;s also info on the JFK website:

    http://www.panynj.com/

Here%26#39;s a cut-n-paste from one of the previous posts.

    1. The flat rate from JFK airport to Manhattan in a LICENSED NYC yellow taxi cab is $45 + tip + tolls, if any. Get in the taxi stand line (queue) and wait for the dispatcher to assign you a cab. Let the dispatcher know if you have any special needs (large group, disability, lots of luggage, etc.) and hopefully they will try to accomodate.

If you take the Queensborough/59th Street bridge to Midtown, there will be no toll. There are tolls on the Queens-Midotwn Tunnel and the Triborogugh Bridge.

All official NYC taxi are yellow, have the same license nuber on the roof light and license plate, and have a ';medallion'; (saucer-sized metal plaque) welded to the roof of their car hood. They are all metered, and you should ask for a receipt when you pay, just in case you need to track down that lost cello you left in the back seat! ;o)

    2. Private livery cabs (';for-hire'; cars), limo companies, other car services, etc. charge their own rates. Check their websites for rates or call them (e.g.: www.crownlimo.com, www.carmellimo.com, etc.) to arrange for a pick-up. Or you can use the courtesy phones at the luggage carousels. If you use a car service, print out your confirmation so that the driver can%26#39;t change your fare on the fly.

    3. Tipping. Usually 15 - 20% of cost of any service before any other add-ons (tax, tolls, etc.)

Search this forum for words like ';tipping'; or ';how much to tip'; or ';tipping etiquette';, and you%26#39;ll find previous discussions such as this heated debate!

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k289829-鈥?/a>

    4. Never take a ride from anyone in the airport terminal/luggage carousel area who offers their taxi.

    Taxi's - How much?

Flat rate from JFK to Manhattan - $45.00, $4.50 toll %26amp; tip of between 15 - 20% of the 45.00, or anywhere from $7.00 to $9.00.

If the driver takes the bridge instead of the tunnel, deduct the $4.50 - you can request that they do this, will also depend on where your hotel is located. The tunnel enters the city on 33rd Steet on the east side, the bridge takes you to 59th on the east side, so if you are staying midtown or downtown it is easier %26amp; faster to take the tunnel, but you have to pay the toll.

It should be noted that not all bridges are without tolls -- the Triborough Bridge, which enters Manhattan at 125th Street, has the same toll as the Midtown Tunnel.

It should also be noted that you may direct your driver to use free bridges besides the Queensborough Bridge at 59th Street. If you are going downtown from LaGuardia, or if you are coming from JFK by way of the Belt Parkway, you may want to cross the East River by means of the Brooklyn Bridge (near Chambers Street), the Manhattan Bridge (Canal Street) or the Williamsburg Bridge (Delancey Street.)

We r going for 2 weeks in feb with a 4 kids and we are wondering on how to pack for the 2 weeks or laundry facilities there or near by. More for kids than ourselves. Kids 15,11,6,5.

    Clothes

There are laundromats and other laundries all over Manhattan where you can leave your laundry. They will launder and fold it and you can pick it up later that day or the next day. They usually charge by weight of the laundry. You can do your own laundry at the laundromats but although cheaper that would be wasting your time.

    Clothes

Use the laundry places. Great, fast service. Inexpensive.

    Sheraton Manhattan

Coming to New York at the end of April to celebrate my wife%26#39;s 40th birthday. Booked a hotel through Hotwire several months ago and got the Sheraton Manhattan. I haven%26#39;t seen any recent reviews on trip advisor for this hotel. Anyone stay there recently? Is it an okay hotel? The location seems very good (halfway between Central Park and Times Square). Any comments on this hotel would be greatly appreciated.

    Sheraton Manhattan

Plenty of reviews here including one from Dec 15. The location is terrific. It%26#39;s a big (convention type) hotel but there%26#39;s an indoor swimming pool.

I would contact the hotel in advance and tell them you%26#39;re celebrating a special birthday. I%26#39;d also join (for free online) their frequent guest program before the trip and show your card on check-in. You may get some freebies or an upgrade. IF you%26#39;re not satisfied with the room you%26#39;re shown, ask for another. It%26#39;s a big place and the sizes etc. can be very different.

    Coming back in Sept!!

I am coming back in September, YAAAAAY!! I am starting my planning a little early I know, but I am sooo excited to be coming back to NYC. It is my favorite place in the world! Tell me, anyone know how the Doubletree Metropolitan is?? I have stayed so far at Doubletree TS and at Waldorf Astoria. I would rather not stay in TS again, It%26#39;s nice to visit but a little too touristy for me to actually stay there. I much prefer the other beautiful neighborhoods. The Waldorf was gorgeous and in a great location, but just thought we would check out other hotels. Any info?? Thanks.

    Coming back in Sept!!

Doubletree Met is not far from the Waldorf on Lexington Ave. (the back side of the Waldorf). It%26#39;s a fairly recently renovated hotel. I know the rooms are small and I also think some have complained about noise as there%26#39;s a police station nearby. Would not be my first choice unless there%26#39;s some amazing deal. Have a look at Affinia 50 or the Kimberly. Both are all suite hotels in the same area (east side 50s). You might also consider trying the much loved upper west side. Look at the Lucerne.

good restaurants close to Doubletree Guest Suites, Times...

Anyone have a suggestion for good, fairly reasonably priced food in this location? Arriving apporx. 1:00 Pm-- need luch place nearby-- Thanks!

good restaurants close to Doubletree Guest Suites, Times...

Any particular type of food, because there are lots of restaurants in the area.

good restaurants close to Doubletree Guest Suites, Times...

Across the street is Roxie%26#39;s deli..which gets mixed reviews. The portions are huge,....but you can bring home leftovers and put in your fridge for lunch the next day. They also have awesome cheesecake. There are so many restaurants around the area you can just go out for a walk and see what interests you.

Not being quite sure of what you like and what you mean by reasonable, so will give you some cheap options as you have some more expensive options already.

Sapporo - a very reasonable Japanese noodle shop.

    La Paloma - Mexican.

Lots of diners like Cafe Cello and Le Rendez-Vous Cafe.

See menupages.com for addresses and more.

Connolly%26#39;s pub on w.45 is near this location. It%26#39;s where we ate when we wanted something quick and convenient when we stayed at the Doubletree. It%26#39;s typical bar food but quite reasonably priced. connollyspubandrestaurant.com/index.html

Thank you porchparty and LibraryGirl! Times Square is a popular location for tourists, and it%26#39;s an area that someone like myself doesn%26#39;t go to that frequently. It%26#39;s great to get actual eperiences from tourists who%26#39;ve stayed around there. Let%26#39;s hear from other recent visitors who stayed in Times Square!

Thanks to everyone who posted ideas. Your advice is so much better than a guide book! We are a family of five (3 kids--18, 22, 23) so our food preferences are all over the map. These sound like great suggections.

A great place for lunch would be Johns Pizza on 44st Street between 7th %26amp; 8th Avenues.

Transfer from JFK to Murray Hill and another dilemma

Point taken - best for me is the least hassle (never been to New York before) and, if possible, the best value for money. Thanks.

I now have another dilemma - I have booked a 3 star hotel in Murray Hill (a v good deal with Expedia) - now I have read that other travellers who have booked similar discounted rooms have had disappointing experiences - have I done the right thing or should I cancel and spend more on a 3/4 star hotel bearing in mind that I want this trip to be a memorable one for the right reasons!

    Thanks.

Transfer from JFK to Murray Hill and another dilemma

If you are more than one person and have luggage, take a taxi. Cost is $45 fixed rate to Manhattan, plus $4,50 toll plus tip.

What is the name of the hotel you booked?

Transfer from JFK to Murray Hill and another dilemma

    Hi

I have just arrived back from New York - will be posting a trip report in the next couple of days.

Just to say another method re transfering from JFK to Murray Hill is prebooking the Super Shuttle via Expedia which is good value. This is what I used to get to my hotel in Murray Hill area.

I wait to here which hotel you are booked in - Murray Hill area is a nice area I found.

I wait to here which hotel you are booked in - Murray Hill area is a nice area I found.

I have just spent a week in the Murray Hill district, a the Jolly Hotel. The area is fabulous. It is just off Madison Ave and is quiet yet just a couple of blocks from Fifth Avenue.

As for travelling from JFK to our hotel, we got a yellow cab from the airport (the only way to see the big apple for the first time imo.

For our travel back to JFK we got the hotel car. It turned out to be a limo and the charge was only $65, inclusive of toll and tip.

I know you will have an amazing time and you are so lucky to be preparing for your trip. I am still coming back to earth after ours.

The easiest way is to use the taxi as it is a fixed price to manhattan. However what ever you do do not talk to anyone who offers you a taxi before you get to the yellow cab stand. This will be for an unofficial taxi and they will rip you off.

As to the hotel it always depends.Obviously the cheaper the rate the less chance of a great room but especially if not very busy you can be lucky. If you give our new york friends the name of your hotel they will be able to give you better advice.

It is impossible for us to advise you without knowing some details like which hotel, the price/night you%26#39;ve paid, what the bad reviews are, when you%26#39;re coming (to have an idea of what else will be available at what price) how much more you%26#39;re prepared to pay and whether you%26#39;d have to pay a cancellation fee and/or stay with Expedia.

As to the best way to/from JFK, a taxi will cost $60 when you include toll and tip and you get door to door service. You can take a bus to Grand Central Station which is in the Murray Hill area for $15/person or $27 return but from there you either have to walk, pay a bit extra for a small bus connection or take a taxi. There are coach services (Super Shuttle) that will take you directly to your hotel but it takes forever if you%26#39;re not the first drop off. Whatever you do, DON%26#39;T use this service for the return (Super Shuttle) as they%26#39;re infamous for not showing up.

Thanks all for your advice so far...

The hotel I have booked in mid February is the Shelburne Murray Hill. Three reasons : -Murray Hill sounds an ideal area for us; I have got a good deal (less than GBP100 per night) and we have a studio suite which hopefully means we can do some self-catering. The only thing concerning me is that it is too good a deal - ie that the suite may not come up to expectation (ie the on -line photos of the room.) Somewhere (and it may not even have been on this site)I have read that travellers who booked hotel rooms through Expedia at a discounted rate were given not so good rooms and because they had booked through Expedia, could do nothing about it once at the hotel. If all the rooms at the Shelburne are of the same standard, then I am worrying for no reason and I will be delighted!

I think I did read that as well but not sure it was the Shelburne. Maybe one of the other Affinia hotels? I think there are some regular rooms there that may not be ';suites.'; Perhaps you should email the hotel and ask the question? Be honest.

Thanks for that advice - will do.

    How about a comedy show:

Comedy Cellar is a great ol%26#39; mainstay, and it%26#39;s in the heart of the Village. It%26#39;s a little worse for wear, but you won%26#39;t be disappointed. It%26#39;s great to walk around the neighborhood.

One thing we enjoy doing when in NYC is heading up to Cleopatra%26#39;s Needle to listen to live jazz. It is at 92nd and Broadway (take the #1 train to 96th St.). While they serve food there and it is reasonably priced, I would not recommend eating there as the food is mediocre at best. Your best bet would be to go for a drink. Check out their webpage (www.cleopatrasneedleny.com). If you do want to go, I would recommend looking at the webpage since it tells you who is performing on what nights--some nights are just ';open mike'; nights. Best of all, you can go casually dressed and there is no cover charge. Last time we were there, we had 1 drink each and with the tip the cost was $20 total (that%26#39;s the total cost for the 2 drinks and tip).

I think dismissing theater makes no sense.

With the exchange rate the way it is, it%26#39;s much cheaper to go to theater here for you and there are things here you won%26#39;t see in London. There are some really good off Broadway things as well. Have a look on playbill.com or theatermania.com

    Trip report 21st - 28th dec...

After waiting so long our trip finally arrived.

21st dec we flew in from Dublin..must say it was great clearing immigration in Dublin before we left, and after our 2 hour delay we were off.

We arrived in JFK about 3pm(in the middle of the transit strike and didn%26#39;t know what to expect). Outside at the taxi rank the price we were given to Manhattan was 70 dollars plus toll and tip. I was more than happy to pay this as I thought it would be 30 dollars each, but as we were 2 adults, one 15 yr old and one 12 year old he charged for a family. Our ride into midtown was good, and the driver was very talkative and friendly, and took about 1 hour with all the traffic.

We checked into our hotel (courtyard Manhattan midtown east. Review of that already done!!!) and by 5pm we were heading out to explore. No unpacking, just out, and fast as we were all so excited to finally be there.

Quick bite to eat, and our first stop was The Waldorf Astoria.. my son was concerned we couldn%26#39;t go in as we were not guests, but in we went. Fabulous! On down towards Byrant park for a quick look, and on to Time Square. My son had an urgent appointment at toys-r-us!!! Everyone on the ferris wheel. didn鈥檛 care about looking silly as everyone was the same. The children were so excited anyone would have thought they had jumping beans in their shoes.

The only BIG disappointment was we had been allocated a big apple greeter for the next morning, but because of the strike, when we called to say we had arrived she had to cancel although she sounded as upset as we were, and told us to call her if we needed any help or advice about NYC, which I thought was nice.

Back to our hotel, now about 10.30pm, everyone exhausted, but very happy.

Thursday 22 dec...All up and out early. Strike still on so we walked to ESB. our hotel was on 3rd ave,52 st, so we were able to take in plenty of atmosphere in our walk. Arrived ESB around 9am. No queues at all, straight up to the top, and WOW!! The sun was out, ok it was cold but those views. We didn%26#39;t know what to expect, but they were better than we had expected. WE stayed up there for about two and a half hours, although I could have stayed all day. Lunch was in a deli in 34th st..the children are fussy eaters, so delis set the pace for eating most of the week, as they usually had something to suit everyone.

Spent a while in Macys (daughter loved there), and we went up to see Santa on the 8th floor. Really knew it was near Christmas then. Back up to Byrant park, as son had seen the ice rink and NEEDED to do there. Husband and son skated for a while and my daughter and I went round the Christmas market shops. All in all a really lovely afternoon. Quick dinner, and over to the Shubert theatre to pick up our tickets for Spamalot. This was fantastic. A really super show enjoyed by everyone. Walked back to hotel via 5th ave and saw the rink and tree at Rockafella center, and radio city on the way. Exhausted after a great day.

Friday 23 Dec...We started our day at the Sony Wonderlab (an interactive science museum) which was enjoyable, but I wouldn%26#39;t say is a must see if time is short. On to Grand Central Terminal and bought metro cards. The strike finally over. Our first trip on the subway was an experience. Down to Bowling green station, and we got the ferry over to Station Island. The views were amazing of lower Manhattan, and the SOL. Another quick lunch on Staten Island, and we got the ferry back. Today was a lot warmer, and really pleasant for walking around all the sights. Saw ground zero site, quick in and out of century 21.. it was so busy in there, and then we got the subway to Canal st..China town. Again we didn%26#39;t know what to expect, but when you come up the steps from the subway you really would think you had arrived in a different country, the buildings, shops and even the smells of all the cooking in the air. Walked around and then over to Little Italy. I thought this area seemed really classy. After a little shopping we took the subway back up to our hotel after another really enjoyable day.

    Saturday 24th dec (Christmas eve)..

WE took the subway to Penn station and walked over to 12th ave for our ride in the helicopter. We went on The Big Apple tour which lasted approx 10/12 minutes, and this was really amazing. We all buzzed with excitement after this, the weather was great for our ride and it really was beautiful to see everything from the air. A real one off experience. Lunch, then we took the subway up to 110th st central park north (yes, we did enjoy the subway by now, all part of the great NYC experience). We then took a bus all the was down 5th ave to sight see. This was a far cheaper option than the hop on/off tour buses, and we saw everything as the traffic was so slow moving.

Then we needed shopping, so it was into FAO Schwartz (about 90 mins), Trump tower, Tiffany鈥檚 (windows only as it was closed by now, so decided we would need to go back to that one!). Dinner in Shbarros. Back to hotel, and bed, starting to panic now that our time was going too fast and we wouldn%26#39;t be able to fit all our plans in.

    25th dec..CHRISTMAS DAY..

Had a bit of a lazy morning today as we were all exhausted. Never done so much walking in our lives. Out at 10.30 and round to see St Patrick鈥檚 cathedral. Morning service was on and it was really moving to be there an Christmas morning. Down again to Byrant park. We all went ice skating this time, and it was a great atmosphere for Christmas day. Mid afternoon the rain started and lasted the rest of the day. Quick bite to eat (no big fancy Christmas dinner for us. We were on a mission to see and do as much as we could), and we then picked up our tickets for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. WE all really enjoyed this and again the atmosphere made it seem really like Christmas. Excellent show, but back to our hotel, and bed.

    Monday 26th dec...

We%26#39;re getting later in the morning. Out to Bloomingdale鈥檚 at 10.45am.

Then we took the subway to 34th st to pay another visit to Macys, Manhattan mall etc...

Walked back up 5th ave, children got bears in Build a bear shop, and although they are 12 and 15, they were both like little children in that store. Up to Tiffanys..It was open this time! Spent ages looking around there and dreaming. Bought daughter a bracelet for her 16th birthday next month, and I think it was me who was more excited to get a Tiffanys box and bag! although she was over the moon, and it is something she can always keep.

Another day over. The time seemed to go in so fast.

    Tuesday 27th dec..

Our last full day. Took the subway to Clark st in Brooklyn, walked around, and down the promenade, again the views of lower Manhattan were amazing from here. Walked back over THE bridge. FANTASTIC. Saw city hall the stock exchange, Wall street, and called into the police museum. The tribute in there to 9/11 was very moving and humbling. The buildings all around here were beautiful. Subway back to time square, Madam Tussauds, dinner and bed.

    Wednesday 28th dec..

Home today. Up, packed and the hotel got us a car to the airport. Checked in and had a smooth flight back to Dublin, from where we had a two hour drive home to reflect on our time in The Big Apple.

All I can say was we all really enjoyed our trip, sorry this report is so long winded, and a really big thank you to everyone on the TA for all advice and information prior to our trip.

HAPPY AND HEALTHY 2006 to everyone.. X

    Trip report 21st - 28th dec...

Sounds like a really well planned wonderful trip. Were you actually able to get inside St. Patrick%26#39;s on Xmas day without a reservation??

    Happy New Year!

    Trip report 21st - 28th dec...

Sounds fantastic...every time your daughter wears what was purchased at Tiffanys she will think of your trip and all of those great memories, and that is what it is really about!

Glad it all worked out for you, even with the transit strike....sounds like a great time was had by all.

Happy %26amp; Healthy New Year to you, too.

    nywhiz,

Yes, on christmas morning we were passing st patrick%26#39;s, just planning to take photographs, and others were going in and out, so I decided to try to get in. Ok I was at the very back..standing room only, but I felt very privileged even to be able to get in at all. Some place..especially on christmas morning. Beautiful.

Wow is all I can say. You lucky duck. I%26#39;m envious. Happy and healthy new year to you and your family. Sounds like a great way to end a year.;)

Enjoyed your report. I never find any report too long. Happy you all has a great time!! A happy ans healthy new year to all of you.

What a great time! You really got to sample quite a lot of Manhattan. Feel free to chime in and use your experiences to add to the great advice on theis forum. Thanks and happy new year.

WE really didn%26#39;t stop for the whole week. The only thing we didn%26#39;t do properly was eat...we didn%26#39;t have time!!

Hopefully sometime my husband and I can return on our own without the children. They really did enjoy their holiday so much, and there was still so many places and things we didn%26#39;t manage to fit in, but it would be nice to be able to sample some of the great restaurants and find a relaxing break in NYC..I%26#39;m sure there is a relaxing side to it all somewhere! Until then ...

    Happy New Year

So good to hear from you Ange! A very happy New Year to you all. Met Daisiegee the other day and asked about you. I hear you%26#39;re looking gorgeous and glowing. ;)

We had a fantastic new year%26#39;s. Great friends, feasting at Carmine%26#39;s, and toasting in the new year with champers at Bethesda Terrace under the fireworks display.

I%26#39;m sure Daisiegee will post a full report when she recovers.

I%26#39;m off to meet the gang at Wollman Rink. I%26#39;ll be the one holding the coats.

    Need a starting point please!

    Hello Everyone,

I%26#39;m thinking about planning a trip to NYC either in February or May...not to sure how long yet. I%26#39;ve never been to the US before, let alone NYC! But I%26#39;ve always wanted to visit there.

So I really have no information whatsoever. What I am looking for is a decent hotel that isn%26#39;t too expensive (I%26#39;m a student), and is downtown somewhere near all the shopping and attractions. What would be an average cost per night someone like me would be paying?

I haven%26#39;t looked up how to get there yet, although I think I can get there by bus. Anyways, I have lots of research to do, but I was just hoping for a bit of initial info on hotels and the location of them that are near attractions.

After I know a bit more, I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll have questions about what to do in the city and where to go. Also, is it safe for someone like me to go alone? I%26#39;m 21 and female. Thanks for any help!

    Need a starting point please!

Will you be travelling alone? How many nights are you thinking about? For a safe, clean and fairly central mid-town hotel expect to pay around $175-$200 US a night. I stayed at The Belvedere in September...avg price was $225 Cdn, but safe and clean were very very important to me. It%26#39;s 2 blocks from Times Square, but I%26#39;ve heard that you can stay in Jersey city for much less and just commute by train.

    Need a starting point please!

Yes I will be travelling alone...not sure how many nights yet - it kind of depended on the cost. But thanks for the info on that hotel...safe and clean is very important to me too! And I%26#39;d rather pay for that than safe and not be in a very good environment.

    how about an all-women residence?

I put links to some of them that someone found

    http://www.broadwayfocus.com/nj_nyc/

Bella, I recently returned from a solo trip to NYC. Stayed at the Hotel Wolcott in Midtown Manhattan. It was clean and inexpensive (relatively speaking) and near the Empire State Building, Macy%26#39;s (world%26#39;s largest department store), lots of other shopping, cafes, parks, train and bus stations, etc. There was a subway stop within 3 blocks (34th and Broadway) that provided easy access to the rest of the city.

Although I%26#39;m male, I never felt unsafe, even at night. Of course, I stayed alert and remained aware of my surroundings.

    http://www.wolcott.com/

    Happy New year!

Hi Bella, I recently travelled to New York with my 19 year old daughter. We stayed the first night in a hotel( won%26#39;t recomend where we stayed...another story!)just to get our feet on the ground then the next 8 nights we stayed at the Hostel International in Amsterdam Ave, close to 103rd street. You have all the facilities and access to cheap meals, internet and get the chance to meet lots of interesting fellow travellers who can give you heaps of tips. By the way we also stayed 9 nights at the Hostels International in Toronto and absolutely loved it. You probably realise you can choose mixed dorms, 4 bed female, 6 bed female etc etc. The rooms are very clean as is the whole hostel. There are lockers, and they supply towels and bed linen and blankets. It was a 3min walk to the 103rd St subway station then 5-10 min ride to get to Times Square. It was very convenient and we always felt very safe. What I enjoyed in this environment was that people were keen to chat and learn things from each other rather than return to a hotel room and close the door. Sure hostels may not be for everyone but think about it as another option.

Another tip, on your first day catch one of the Hop on Hop off buses with a real person for a tour guide! this will give you your bearings and jot down places of interest that you would like to return to. You will learn so much from these tour giudes. I think the ticket lasts 24 hours so you can do the complete tour one day then go back next morning and hop on and off at the places you want to check out. You are going to have a wonderful time, the people are beautiful and extremely helpful to confused travellers! We always felt safe and we were out at all times of day and night. Just be as sensible and aware as you are in Toronto. Best wishes, Anne.

I think you%26#39;ve gotten excellent advice so far. It would help to know what sort of budget you have for accomodation and what sort of place you%26#39;d like. Perhaps the hostel idea is a good one since it would be a way of meeting some other travelers.

For getting here, I see some amazingly cheap airfares from Buffalo. US Air has fares of $130 roundtrip! Jet Blue also flies from Buffalo to NYC and should be competitive. Much better than a bus all the way.

You should DEFINITELY check out the Cosmopilitan Hotel

    http://www.cosmohotel.com/

It is very convenient to downtown, Greenwich Village, Soho, etc., etc. and a short subway ride (20 minutes max.) to all other tourist attractions and museums.

For more info about downtown/Lower Manhattan, check this website:

    http://www.downtownny.com/default.aspx?sid=3

    It%26#39;s a great area!

BTW, since you%26#39;re from T.O., you will probably take to NYC very quickly. There are a lot of similarities in culture, diversity, food, subway system, etc. NYC is like a super-mega-collosal version of T.O. You%26#39;ll have a great time!

Here%26#39;s my usual shpiel about good resources for firt-time visitors:

Do you have a guide book yet? If not, you should get one and start getting the lay of the land.

Start searching this forum for trip reports, or phrases like ';must see';, and you will have all your questions answered!

Map are essential for planning your itinerary. Personally, my fave is the Not for Tourist guide. It %26#39;s a ';little black book'; that has a low goofy-tourist factor. Very thorough, and all maps are printable from the website, once you register for free:

    www.notfortourists.com/newyork.aspx

To sightsee, group things by location/neighborhood. The majority of attractions are in Manhattan and easily accessible by subway.

For example, in lower Manhattan you can do these within a 1 mile radius: Staten Island Ferry, Battery Park, Wall Street, Trinity Church, Subtreasurey Building, Museum of Finance, Ground Zero, Century 21, St. Paul%26#39;s Chapel, Fulton Street, South Street Seaport.

Finally, you MUST wear comfortable shoes. This is a walking city. You%26#39;ll end up with great legs!

How about Radio City Apartments. We (4 women) stayed in a 1 bedroom suite and the cost was $155 per night. The smaller rooms are cheaper. It is located on 49th street between Times Square and 5th Avenue. Perfect location. I would stay here again in a minute. Very clean, comfortable beds, kitchenette and a nice living room area. It was nice to have a sofa to relax on after much walking. Have I said that it is in the perfect location! Subway right around the corner. Have I said the location! Oh, sorry I keep repeating myself about the location!

I agree with Radio City Apartments. Stayed there last year (!) and it was a great location and great price. Nice to have a kitchen for snacks etc. Single female traveller who felt very safe and secure - near all the tourist sites but not right on top of them.

    Have fun.

Cost to get from Lag Airport to Affinia Manhattan? Have 5...

What is the best way to get from Lag Airport to Affinia Manhattan hotel? Have 5 people in my party.

    THanks.

Cost to get from Lag Airport to Affinia Manhattan? Have 5...

Regular taxis only hold 4 passengers, so you would need two which will cost you about $70 total (fare, tolls and tip). A larger vehicle from a car service may be less. I use Carmel. carmellimo.com 212-666-6666. Give them a call.

Cost to get from Lag Airport to Affinia Manhattan? Have 5...

You could get one of the mini bus taxis - should fit 5. Just request this from the taxi dispatcher.

Yes there are larger taxis that take 5 but not too much luggage. If you can get one of these it will be about $35.The dispatcher will be able to help you out and should not have to wait long for the larger cab.We didnt.

Crown limo may have a rate for a stretch limo that would cost less than 2 taxis. Try emailing them for a rate quote at

    1800mycrown.com

Say you saw an ad in the travel magazine and wondered what the cost would be for 5 to midtown. I think it should be about $50.

  • this works
  • Credit Card Safety at Parfumerie Douglas Inc.

I purchase some products in the Washington, DC store and later discovered on my receipt that this store print your whole credit card number on the receipt. Which this is in voliation of your privacy actas well as credit card theft or fraud. I will not be shopping there anymore because of this practice, their corporate office need to immediately fix this problem before there is a big lawsuit that would not be pretty. Please tell anyone that you know that purchase anything by credit card to check their receipt.

    Signed Annoyed Customer

Credit Card Safety at Parfumerie Douglas Inc.

Although that a good security practice, it is not against any law to print the entire credit card number on the receipt nor is it credit card theft or fraud. In fact, small merchants who only have mechanical credit card equipment have to print the credit card number on the receipt from the embossed number on the card and therefore the whole number has to be on the receipt.

Credit Card Safety at Parfumerie Douglas Inc.

As someone who has worked in retail for many years I fully agree totall. It may not be illegal but it is about time more retailers did more to protect their customers.Another bug bear of mine is when assistants cant be bothered to check signature against your card...

The problem is we tend to let our guard down when on holiday, but we have to take responsibility for our credit cards too.Dont ever let your card out of your sight(eg in restaraunts).I deal with credit card theft and fraud on a regular basis but it still never fails to amaze me how common it really is.

And as for chip and pin, lets not even go there.....!

I meant to say that: Although that in ';not'; a good security paractice.

It doesn%26#39;t matter what is on the credit card receipt - the whole number is not against the law. With new technology it is very easy for thieves to copy card information and then just make a whole new card with your name, number, expiry date and even the security code on the back. I have just signed off on over $5,000.00 worth of items purchased with a credit card in my name in Paris, France in early December. The fraud squad is investigating. The whole thing is called ';skimming'; and is very common the world over.

This appears to be a place in Wash. D.C. and you%26#39;re on the NYC board.

Thanks, whiz--I was beginning to wonder if there was a 930 Club in NYC, also!

LOL...thanks for your responses NYWhiz and Sue! Hubby had the wrong info!

    large hotel room under $250

I am going to NY in June. I would like to get a hotel not far from Laguardia airport and 3 to 4 star. I would love a hotel with a great bar and a room that is a nice size. Does anyone have any ideas ? Also a great view from would be great.

    Thanks

Whoa. Have you looked at a map? La Guardia airport is in Queens, not Manhattan. Do you want a hotel in Queens near the airport or one in Manhattan? It%26#39;s only about 20-30 minutes into Manhattan from the airport so not far. But it%26#39;s like being a world away. Easy to find a room for $200 at LGA.

If you want a hotel in Manhattan, there are plenty of options that would fit the bill. The Millenium UN Plaza has a nice bar (no view) and nice sized rooms, many with views. They have an enclosed rooftop swimming pool with great views.

The Affinia Beekman Towers hotel has a rooftop bar with view and many of their rooms are suites with kitchenettes.
