Building in NYC

Hi

I%26#39;m trying to find out what a particular building is in NYC. It%26#39;s near the Chrysler building, it%26#39;s black and the top slopes on two sides to make a point.

I know this is a bit vague - I%26#39;ve tried loads of websites but can%26#39;t find anything!

Building in NYC

Could you possibly mean near Bryant Park/NY Public Library area, the American Radiator Building at 40 West 40th Street?

Here is a link to some pictures: http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/hood/hood4.html

Building in NYC

Thanks for the reply

I%26#39;ve looked at the link and unfortunately it doesnt look like the same building - the one I%26#39;m trying to find has a sloping top rather than stepped - we think it is a fairly modern building.

Is it this building to the right of the Chrysler building in this photo?

Yes here it is again, i%26#39;ve no idea:

www.worldofstock.com/closeups/TNY1468.php

Yes - that%26#39;s the one - the black one to the right of the Chrysler building!

ok i think it%26#39;s the Trump Apartments on first ave:

scroll down

nope, sorry i%26#39;m wrong again, Trump apartments is the tall skinny building.

Found it this time! It%26#39;s an apartment building, 100 United Nations Plaza:

kudos to me

thanks so much for replying - it was driving us mad!

And 100 UN Plaza is a condominium building at the corner of First Avenue and 48th Street, with a plaza in front of it. The Trump World Tower is across 48th street on First Avenue between 47th and 48th.

  • Bedrooms in private houses offered to tourists: how to be...

I%26#39;ve been suggested to take a look at craigslist.org looking for cheap accomodations in NYC. I%26#39;d say there are some very interesting offers, but how to be sure?

I mean, it is almost always requested to pay in advance at least part of the money, and once paid it%26#39;s just a matter of trusting the other person? You have to trust that the person you talk to(and give your money to) is who he\she says he is and actually willing to alllow me into one of his bedrooms?

I am 6.500 km. away from NYC, and I would not have any way to check before I actually get there.

    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Bedrooms in private houses offered to tourists: how to be...

that is basically the gist of the problem

even though I live in the USA, unless I take the time and physically go to the place, I wouldn%26#39;t know either

and even if you know the house exists

how would you know that the bedroom is really available?

    it%26#39;s just like eBay

    risks because it is ';cheap';

and when you run into problems, you are in Italy and the courts and police are here in the USA

How much time to get through customs (international flight...

    Hello,

We%26#39;ve booked a trip to NY. And plan to get a limo or a sedan to pick us up at JFK. But I really don%26#39;t know how much time we will need to get through customs. The Limo company needs to know of course at what time the driver should pick us up.

We arrive with an international flight from Brussels at 1.30pm.

Or maybe, we should be taking a taxi?

    So ... can anyone help?

How much time to get through customs (international flight...

A taxi is very easy if there are not more than 4 of you. It%26#39;s a set price of $45 plus toll ($4) and tip--so about $55-60. At that time of day, I%26#39;d take a taxi.

How much time to get through customs (international flight...

    thx Nywhiz!

Do I order a limo/sedan to get us back to the airport, because I think taxi%26#39;s are payed by the meter when going to the airport?

Flight%26#39;s leaving at 7.50 pm. When should we meet the driver than?

    Thx

Yes, I%26#39;d get a car service back to the airport. For an int%26#39;l flight you need to be there 2 hrs. before flight time. (Doublecheck with your airline). That means be there at 5:50 which puts you in rush hour traffic. I%26#39;d leave at 4-4:30 on a weekday.

    telavivlimo.com

    1800mycrown.com

    H茅 Nywhiz,

    Thanks for your help!!

I guess we will '; do it your way';.

Should we make an online reservation for the car service now, or is it better to do it from the hotel, once we arrive in NY?

    Thanks again!

It doesn%26#39;t really matter how you order the car. If you order now online, just make sure to confirm by email or phone a day or so before. If you wait til you get here, just be aware what prices are and if the hotel offers to do this for you, make sure they%26#39;re not using someone really expensive (which often happens). Ask how much it will be. (Or phone one of these yourself.)

    airtrain

hi guys - just looking for some advice - arriving at lunchtime on jan7th into jfk - was looking at taking the airtrain and then subway to our hotel on W52nd and Broadway - just how difficult is it - the subway maps look so confusing - used the underground in london and the metro in london with ease but it looks quite taxing - help!!!

    airtrain

The AirTrain trip is very easy. When you arrive at Jamaica Station there will be signs to guide you in the direction of the Subway Platform. The platform will also be marked, Manhattan (right) and Queens (left). You want the Manhattan side, obviously.

Fear not, even if you get on the wrong train, it only goes one stop further into Queens before turning around and heading back to Manhattan, there is no way to screw it up.

    airtrain

Oh..and get off the train when you reach 50th st station.

This option is really only good if you don%26#39;t have too much luggage as you will have to haul it up and down stairs. If that%26#39;s ok, take the AirTrain to the E train subway stop. Take the E train and get out either at 7 Avenue /53 Street or the next stop, 50 Street /8 Avenue, not sure which would be closer.

yes we will only have a backpack each so luggage isn%26#39;t a problem Why do you new yorkers make everything sound so simple!!!!

it looks like we will use thisoption - do we buy tickets at the airport?

No.. you buy the tickets after the train ride is over in Jamaica via vending machine.

You may see a few first timers on the platform at JFK looking confused cause there is no place to buy tickets, even I thought it was a little weird the first time.

Also make sure the signboard says ';Jamaica Station'; before you get on the train. (Above the doors)

now i am confused!! we were planning on taking the airtrain to howard beach and then geting the subway from howard beach to 50th - is this another option??

Yes Jamaica is much quicker. You will enter Manhattan in midtown, and it%26#39;s fewer stops in Queens.

It%26#39;s the same track, so its not confusing at all.

i was just checking my subway map and yes it does look a lot quicker - how long can i expect the trip to take - thanks you have been a huge help

AirTrain is crazy fast, you will be at Jamaica in about 10 minutes then from Jamaica to 50th st is about 25 minutes.

Depending on the transfer time, I would say it should take roughly an hour for the entire trip.

trip report... Christmas with the kids

    A Transit strike, a seven year old with the flu, a delayed flight on a puddle jumper that we had to walk onto the tarmak to board. (In an Alex Trebek voice) ';What are ways to make a shaky start to you vacation?';

I was so nervous that all of my months of planning were in vain, but once in the air everything started coming together. We finally left Louisville and arrived at La Guardia 1 1/2 hours later eager to see the city. We stepped into a yellow cab with no wait and began our whirlwind ride into Oz. I noticed a picture of Muhammad affixed to the dashboard of the cab and although I am a Christian, I figured at this point we can use all the help we can get! The ride cost $40 with toll and tip. We arrived in one piece at the Marriott Marquis hotel. The hotel was perfect, we never waited even one full minute for an elevator and the system was simple. We were on the 11th floor so this may have helped, the higher up I assume the longer the wait. Our room was surprisingly large with two double beds and because we were situated at the side of the building we had a partial view of times square. The view was perfectly adequate for me considering how little time we spent in the room, I wouldn%26#39;t pay the extra $$ for the full view. I%26#39;ll submit a full review on TA later on the hotel. By now it was about 4pm so we headed to Johns Pizza for an early dinner/late lunch. One large plain pizza and four soft drinks cost only $22 plus tip! And the brick oven pizza was delicious. After ';linner'; we stopped at Toys R Us which was a mad house so it was hard to really look around, we decided to come back another time so we headed up to the Hershey Store. My 10 year old daughter is on a no sugar kick so she was delighted with her sugar free chocolate find. We stood in a looooong line to pay for her candy and also the $5 to put a message on the store marquis out front. It read, ';Kayleigh and Alexa love NYC!'; We hurried across the street for a photo of their names in lights. They loved it. We then walked to the American Girl place and made a modest purchase which is difficult in this particular store! Next, we happened upon the tree in Rockefeller Center which was huge and beautiful with the rink full of skaters below. Here we also saw the costumed characters such as Chicken little and Elmo but I had seen on the news that they are actually just panhandlers? Well off again to St Patricks which was breathtaking inside and out although it was dark so you couldn%26#39;t really see the stained glass very well. I wish we would have seen it during the day in all it%26#39;s glory. We then headed to FAO Schwartz where the children loved the life sized stuffed animals (especially the $15,000 elephant) and my husband took a photo of the ';Big'; piano where the employees were putting on a fab show. Then we dragged ourselves past Tiffany%26#39;s and to Central Park where we took a carriage ride through the park. We didn%26#39;t see much, especially at night, but we did see the ice skaters and the kids felt like princesses. We somehow walked back to the hotel and crashed. Hows that for day one??

Dec 24th subway fares were on special for $1 so we took the train to ground zero. It was quiet and somber but I%26#39;m glad we did it. Most people were respectful but there were some morons smiling like they were taking every day family photos. I will assume they just don%26#39;t know any better. We then walked to Battery Park and then over to the Staten Island Ferry for the free ride past the Statue of Liberty. The view was great and made for some great photos. We hopped on the subway back to Macy%26#39;s which was too crowded to move so left almost immediately. BTW, the subway was very easy for us newbies, the maps are very self expanatory. Anyway, we then walked over to Bryant Park and picked up a few items from the Holiday Market. The kids then wanted to ice skate which was free except the $7.50pp skate rental. It was the children%26#39;s first time but they took right to the ice and had a blast. I, however, turned 30 this year so I%26#39;ll blame that for my quick exhaustion but needless to say we didn%26#39;t stay very long! We saw the outside of the library next door and then walked back to Ollies Noodles for dinner. It was very good but I asked the waiter if it was family style and he said no so we ordered an entree each and had way too much food. Back to the hotel again with aching feet!

Dec 25th we walked to Grand Central for the laser show which was a complete joke, but the building was beautiful and we had brunch at Junior%26#39;s topped off with a famous slice of cheesecake...Yum. After re-entering times square we were approached by about the millionth vendor asking if we wanted a purse or watch. I broke down and bought a $20 bag (he asked $25) I know it%26#39;s controversial on this forum but if you do want one of these bags don%26#39;t think you have to go into some locked room with a stranger to get one. I could never have done that with my children with me. Maybe the quality is better in the ';back rooms'; but I live in Kentucky so I doubt anyone will notice or care that mine is not genuine. Okay, so now it started to rain so we bought a $5 umbrella and a $2.99 t-shirt in a souveneer shop and headed back to the hotel. We cleaned up, had a quick bite and headed to Hilton Theatre for a 6pm performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was a wonderful show, the sets were magnificent. Both the children and I loved it and hubby didn%26#39;t fall asleep so I guess that%26#39;s good. Back to the hotel again for some rest. Along the way we were suckered into getting a drawing of my 7 year old for $5. Well afterwards the artist shows you that it will smear with the slightest touch so you must buy the frame for an extra $20! She ended up giving us both the frame and picture for $20, what a bargain huh? Oh well lesson learned $5 is never $5 in times square : )

Dec 26th woke up to some stubborn drizzling rain but left early anyway and went across the street to Good Morning America. We were on tv for about a second.. woo hoo, we%26#39;re famous! Charlie Gibson was very friendly and made an extra effort to shake eveyone%26#39;s hand and say hello even when the cameras were long gone. The kid%26#39;s felt really special at their 2 seconds in the limelight : ) We then stopped at a couple of the shops that were too crowded to enjoy before and bought some last minute items. Crowne Limo picked us up at the hotel at 12:30pm for our 2:50pm flight. They were early in fact and arrived in a navy blue 6 passenger limo that I reserved for $39 plus tip thanks to this forum (you just have to mention you saw the ad in the travel magazine to get this rate) The driver took us over the Queens bridge so there was no toll and we got different scenery than when we arrived. So $50 for this leisurely ride versus $40 for the cab ride, I%26#39;ll gladly pay the extra $10 next time.

In summary we all had a great time. The weather was unseasonably warm which was great with all the walking we did. We only took the subway twice, to get to and from downtown. We never even had to take a cab besides from the airport. Everything was so convenient to the hotel. Next time the kids want to return in the Spring or Summer months to see more of Central park, Coney Island, some of your wonderful museums. That being said, we accomplished so much in our 4 day 3 night trip and fell in love with the city. If I ever win the lottery, look out, I%26#39;m coming to stay!

Thanks everyone on this forum for your wonderful advice, I%26#39;ll take you over my guidebooks anyday... well at least in conjunction with my books ; )

2 of us are going over to WWE on Jan 3rd from NYC - if anyone else is going would be happy to share a limo etc....we%26#39;re based at Battery Park.

Is it worth going over there early? Starts at 1930hrs I believe - presume it will finish at approx 2200hrs??

I only went once about 3 years back to see aerosmith. i took the continental arena bus from the port authority bus staion. I only remember being dropped off in a giant carpark to wait in line to get in the stadium. So unless things have changed since then, there%26#39;s nothing else to do when you%26#39;re there, no.

NY in April - Soho Grand Hotel

Wow, what a surprise! Hubby%26#39;s Christmas present to me was a trip to New York! It will be exactly 10 years since he took me there to propose on the observation deck of the Empire State Building.

We are staying at the Soho Grand Hotel, anyone had any experience of this? The trip reviews I%26#39;ve read so far are very positive.

Also, apart from the site of the World Trade Centre, what has changed in the past 10 years that we really should see? We did most of the usual tourist sights last time.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

NY in April - Soho Grand Hotel

Congratulations!! First thought is you must go to Top of the Rock, the new observation deck at Rockefeller Center giving the ESB a run for the money. Reports are much more pleasant experience.

Times Square will seem much changed I think. Lots of new hotels built there in the last 10 years. Soho is also much changed/gentrified. Don%26#39;t know if you spent much time there last time. There%26#39;s now a Bloomingdales in Soho along with lots of other mainstream shops.

The meatpacking district (edge of Greenwich Village) is much changed in the last 10 yrs., but again, maybe you didn%26#39;t visit it last time.

The lower eastside is another area much changed, but again not somewhere tourists generally saw before.

I think you should enjoy staying in Soho. I hear some of the rooms at the Grand are small, but it%26#39;s a very nice hotel in a buzzy part of town.

3 girls in new york for the 1st time.

Your post sounds exactly like my first post! Ya don%26#39;t happen to be redheads do ya? We stayed at The crowne plaza in times square. It was perfect! It is right in the center of it all. Mtv studios was right next door, and so was broadway row, and subways, shopping, eating, drinking, everything! Check it out! Oh yeah, have a great time!

Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square - Is it Safe Around...

We are planning to stay at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Times Square in the early part of January. Would anyone tell me if it is safe to be walking at night time near this hotel? Is it centrally located to most of the sights in New York? Thanks in advance.

Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square - Is it Safe Around...

It is absolutely safe, lots of people around, it is in the middle of Times Square, nothing to worry about.

Doubletree Guest Suites Times Square - Is it Safe Around...

Our family of 5 stayed there last March for 6 days. We loved it, and always felt safe in the immediate area. There are police all over the area, lots of people at all times, and doormen in the front door. You can%26#39;t get past the lobby without showing your room card. My teens were out alone in the evenings for a short bit looking at the souvenier shops close by or grabbing a snack at the McDonald%26#39;s next door. We never had any issues. The rooms there are very quiet also. It is the perfect location to walk to most sights, and you can grab a cab right out front to go downtown, or you are also on a bus line and near the subway. It is a great location. We walked to the theater, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Macy%26#39;s, ESB, (of course the weather was much warmer then.) But even if you chose to take a cab, it only costs $4 - $7 to the other main attractions. You are also next door to the Visitor%26#39;s Center which has free internet use.

We stayed at the Doubletree Times Sq last January for 7 nights. It is in a great position, and like porchparty said the rooms are quiet which is rare in NY. Security is good, you always have to show your key to get into the lift that takes you from the small street level lobby to the ';real ';lobby a few floors up. Walking around at night is no problem, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Try Virgils BBQ while you are there - it is good and always busy. Enjoy NY, relax and have a good time.

It%26#39;s as safe as anywhere else.

Just keep your wits about you and you%26#39;ll be OK.

Did you not do any research before you booked the hotel in relation to the location?

It seems not if you are asking about the sights.

Purchase a guide book w/map to get your bearings, it really will be helpful.

    Poppa

most likely one of the safest areas as it is full of policemen...yum yum!]

Stayed there january2005.Regularly walked back to the hotel from near the UN building at midnight and never felt unsafe.

Central to the theatres, lots of restaurants nearby and close to subway and busses going downtown.Thoroughly reccomend it.

New York City is the safest big city in the country, Manhattan is the safest part of the City, so don%26#39;t worry, have fun.

It is very safe-the sidewalks are crowded always but there are plenty of police around. I book all my out of town friends into this hotel for that reason specifically because although I feel safe in most neighborhoods, they do not and at this hotel,I know they are. It is a terrific hotel and the service is great.

  • Quick advice please - Subway tickets

2 of us fly tomorrow - be over for 6 nights and cant wait!

Re subway passes - do you get a combined subway/bus pass for the 7 days?

I read before that its a good idea to buy a 7 day subway pass for approx 25usd...does that cover buses also?

    Ta

Quick advice please - Subway tickets

It is confusing. The 7 day pass (called a metrocard) is unlimited use of subways and buses for 7 days. Can only be used by 1 person at a time. There%26#39;s also a 1 day version of this. YOu can also get a ';pay as you go'; metrocard. Read more about it here

    www.mta.nyc.ny.us/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm

Most tourists feel the 7 day card is great but you should also realize so much of what you%26#39;ll want to see is midtown, within a walk. If you plan on doing a lot of clubbing, many of those are downtown though.

Quick advice please - Subway tickets

The %26#39;whiz%26#39; is spot on about MertoCards. I prefer the pay as you go; these are issued in specific dollar amounts and can be recharged if you run out, they also can be used by more than one person, ie; swipe it twice for two people taking a ride.

I think this would be better if you are concentrating on midtown sights.

    Poppa

7 day metrocard for $24. Can be used on nyc subway and regular buses. Not good on PATH subway, express buses, or the AirTrain at the JFK or Newark.

You can%26#39;t use it at the same station or on the same bus line within 18 minutes of your last use, but that is never a problem.

check out the mta website for more info: www.mta.info

Staying down at Battery Park if that helps....

Would it be the NYC Subway or Path that we%26#39;d be using to travel to all the sites etc?

    staying down at battery park

no need to use PATH unless you are planning on going over to NJ

you can use the pay-per-ride Metrocards on PATH now www.panynj.gov/path/quickcard.htm

Since you%26#39;re staying downtown, and plan to explore Manhattan and go crazy-nutty-cookoo, buy the $24 unlimited 7-day MetroCard. Wooo! You can use it as many times as you want, on subways and buses, 24-7-365!! The only thing limiting you is your stamina.

(Remember - you can%26#39;t share the unlimited card. If you were able to share an unlimited card, and had a big group of folks using it, you could bring down the cost of a subway ride to less than one penny per ride!!!)

Sometimes that ';18 minute'; delay rule does pose a problem, especially for the inexperienced or ';un-co-ordintated';. ;o)

For example, let%26#39;s say there%26#39;s a group of tourists standing at the turnstile, and they are supposed to all wait until their ';leader'; determines whether this is the correct line to use. INEVITABLY, someone in the group will wander off in a haze or over-confident swagger, not pay attention, and swipe through the turnstile to the WRONG LINE. Chaos ensues: ';Where%26#39;s Joe? What! He paid the fare already! Argh, we%26#39;re supposed to go to a different line!'; Joe exits back to the group, with shame and indignance.

Now, when everyone goes to the correct turnstile, Joe has to wait 18 minutes until he can join his posse. The group then has to rush eating dinner and barely makes it to the play for curtain time! Everyone hates Joe until next day%26#39;s happy hour. Plus, his friends won%26#39;t let him live it down, especially when they get back home to tell stories.

    buffalo to toronto

I have a meeting in Toronto and am considering flying into Buffalo to save money and take a look at Niagra Falls. How long would the drive from the Buffalo airport to Toronto be including border crossing? How much time should I allot to check out Niagra Falls? Thanks!

    buffalo to toronto

Depending on traffic-(which as you get closer to TO is a huge consideration) it could take between 90 minutes and 2 and 1/2 hours. Crossing the border is a crap shoot, but it usually doesn%26#39;t take much time. Have your driver%26#39;s license ready.

If you are coming after April you must make some time to do the Maid of the Mist-it is an awesome experience. If you only had time to do one thing at the Falls-this would be it. So give yourself at least a few hours-one day would be better.

    buffalo to toronto

From the Buffalo Airport to Toronto will take a little over two hours depending on your traffic when you close in on Toronto. Try to avoid rush hour. Buffalo to the Falls and over the border should take less than 1 hour and the bridge at most time will only take 10-20 minutes. You can stop and park along the Niagara Parkway and see the falls. Give yourself about 1/2 hour unless you have more time available. I would recommend you continue to drive the Niagara Parkway through Niagara on the Lake and hook back up with the QEW in St. Catherines to head up into Toronto. This will take an extra 1/2 hour or so but you will appreciate the investment of time. Winston Churchill described his drive from Niagara Falls to Niagara on the Lake the prettiest drive he has ever taken. Stop at a few wineries to bring home a sample of the region.

    Ferry trips

Im a lil bit confused with the ferry options.

I%26#39;d like to do a trip to get next to the SOL, but unsure about Ellis Island.

As it will be freezing, would prefer to do trip which lasts no more than 1-1.5hrs.

    Whats the best option?

    Ferry trips

Free Staten Island ferry passes near but not right at the statue. You ride to Staten Island. Get off, get on another ferry and ride back. Nice views. No hassle. The ferry that actually goes to the Statue and then on to Ellis Island requires lots of security checks and you pay for tickets.

    Ferry trips

best of all the staten island ferry is free. round trip less than an hour, great views of the statue.

I agaree with the other posts-stick to the Staten Island Ferry. It%26#39;s free, you can get great pictures of the Statue of Liberty and avoid the hassle and the cost of the Ellis Island/Liberty Island Ferry.Enjoy!(And after dark,it%26#39;s really beautiful)

Exactly where can we get info about the free ferry? Such as hours of operation and location?

    Thanks!

T-New York on New Years Eve...need two more for VIP

We (myself, wife, friend and girlfriend) booked a VIP table at T-New York. They called today to tell me that because there is only four of us (minimum in party is six) we cannot have a VIP table on the third floor. Is anyone going to T-New York on NYE? We need two or more to add to our party to get best seats in the house. This can be a win-win situation for a couple of people who want VIP but are short the needed 6 people. Table holds up to 14. We are partiers who are will be having a great time.

T-New York on New Years Eve...need two more for VIP

How much is it. Would be great, but fear none starter for me as have a small child and I%26#39;m guessing not allowed (21%26#39;s and over)?

If by some miracle that is not the case, please let me know further details.

Can%26#39;t seem to get a response on recent post as to where I could try with my 2 year old???

    Cheers

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

T-New York on New Years Eve...need two more for VIP

VIP tickets are $200 each and include open bar, VIP table seating (standard tickets anywhere do not include a seat), bottle of Grey Goose %26amp; Bottle of champagne, and breakfast. Adults only admission. There is a dance floor and music all night. Will be a great time.

Anyone else out clubing on NYE?

This is a good deal for less than six people since most all clubs on NYE require 6 or more for table seating.

We have four tickets now but the club requires us to have at least two more to guarantee a table.

If interested, reply to post and I will give you our reservation name to book under.

    Have a Merry Christmas..Happy Hanukkah.

    ? :]

    Hoping to get a response...????

Wow! Sounds awesome, especially considering how many folks here were looking for somehting fun to do on NYE. I hope you get a nice pair of partiers to join you.

    HI!

i am coming over form England on Friday for NYE with my boyfriend (suprose trip for his 30th bday!!), i have already got tickets booked for Capitale but would really love VIP table seats somewhere...is it too late for me to swap over tickets?

Hey Ladymovin, I%26#39;m not sure if you can change over tickets. To book tickets to T New York go to link: http://www.newyears.com/party.asp?id=1745

Let them know in the comment section that you are with the ';Levit Party';. Hope to see you there. If not, have a terrific NYE.

  • lion king at new amsterdam theatre

Has anybody been to the lion king at the above theatre and sat in the balcony on the $60 seats?

Can you see and hear everything? I am in two minds. I am not big on shows but am thinking about seeing one with the family just so we can say that we%26#39;ve been to broadway! Hence don%26#39;t want to spend a fortune on tickets.

lion king at new amsterdam theatre

Then this is not the show to see. There are plenty of other shows that are regularly available with discount codes. Go to broadwaybox.com Hairspray is currently avail. for $55. Dirty Rotten Scoudrels is fun and may also be available.

If YOU%26#39;RE not a fan of shows, don%26#39;t go and save the money and send the rest of the family.

lion king at new amsterdam theatre

    I absolutely loved this show!!!!

mel I wasn%26#39;t suggeting it%26#39;s not good. Merely suggesting if the poster doesn%26#39;t want to spend too much money, there are cheaper options. Also, the Lion King is not your typical Broadway show (for better or worse) and many men who are not big theater fans really didn%26#39;t like Lion King with the puppets.

thanks for the heads up NY whiz. Think i might send the family and have a couple of beers whilst their watching the show. Any one here is welcome to join me.

Even so, are the balcony seats at the back any good? They really want to see lion king and I really dont want to fork out $200 for the premium tickets.

Also anyone been to the sales? any good? Will they still be on 6th Jan?

One more thing... The rocafella tree stays up until 6th December. Does that mean it will be taken down on the 7th and remain up all night on the 6th? I may have to view it as soon as I land.

Cheers. This is a very good forum!!

I%26#39;m normally a cheap seats kind of person and I go to a lot of shows...but for the Lion King,I think you will enjoy it more if you are in the Orchestra. The opening parade is a major part of the show and it%26#39;s just a lot better from Orchestra seats-you don%26#39;t have to be up front necessarily, just on the ground floor.

    Or there%26#39;s always standing room!

    Top Of The Rock

how %26#39;bout top of the rock at sunset? or what could be better than the old fashioned horse drawn carriage ridfe around Central park - and remember - I am sure you owuld want your proposal to have more class than s*x inthe city does ! good luck !

yeah I think the horse drawn carriage idea is good-or somewhere quiet in central park. As a s*x and the city follower, there havent been many romantic proposals in it-there was one outside tiffany%26#39;s (and that wasnt even a proper proposal) and carrie was proposed to in a street while walking aidans dog so wasnt the most romantic proposal there either. Good Luck!

    21 Club Pre-Theater Dinner

We have been to NYC numerous times and are going again Feb 11th to see Wicked.

Has anyone eaten at the 21 Club? I saw it on the Apprentice and they have a reasonable pre-theater dinner menu , but if anyof you have a better suggestion or recommend the 21 Club, then I will make my reservations.

    Thanks!

    21 Club Pre-Theater Dinner

I haven%26#39;t been there in years, but I think it is a bit stuffy. Neat decor, old-boys-club, wood, pipes, books, etc. but the food was good, not fabulous. Don%26#39;t know your ages or tates, though.

Have you tried looking at reviews here (both in this forum and on the restaurants link) and on these websites?:

    21 Club Pre-Theater Dinner

Hmmm...maybe they improved or maybe I didn%26#39;t appreciate it? All these reviews on Citysearch are very postitive - to raving!

    http://newyork.citysearch.com/review/7143799

21 Club is actually pretty good. I would love to know how the pre-theater prix fixe is.

A friend took me out to 21 to celebrate my birthday a few months ago and we had a great time. It%26#39;s almost like a theme park version of John Cheever%26#39;s world -- with the men all in blue blazers and khakis and the women in understated designer elegance. The feel is like a Greenwich or Grosse Pointe country club. It may well be the most Republican place in Manhattan, lol. While I was waiting for my friend to arrive, I was sitting in the welcoming area and heard a middle-aged man pontificating about how what religion you belong to dictates what kind of art you like and, thus, what museums you donate to.

The food is actually very good, as long as you stay away from their ';famous'; ckicken hash, whicch seems lathered in Velveeta. I hate a great kabob of game meats. Terrific cocktails, too.

PontMarie has summed up the clientele beautifully. I%26#39;ve not tried the pre-theater menu, but we had a wonderful dinner there during our last visit to New York.

The ambience and service were flawless, but we were bemused by the toy aeroplanes, lorries and sporting equipment hanging from the ceiling. We thought it a bit like a theme pub - but our waiter explained all the items were gifts from the captains of industry who frequent the place - apparently Howard Hughes was one of the first to bring in a model of one of his planes, and the rest of corporate America seem to have followed suit since.

The other thing we found a little strange was the way they seated us side by side at the table on a semi-circular banquette, so we were looking out on the restaurant. Usually we prefer to sit opposite one another, but I must admit it was great for people watching. We didn%26#39;t spot any celebrities, but apparently Laura Bush had been in earlier that day.

We have had the price-fixe lunch and it was wonderful. I am sorry we didn%26#39;t go there the last time in NYC. 21%26#39;s prices are reasonable. We ate a pre-theatre dinner at the Four seasons, and it was good ($65), however, at twice the price of 21 Club, I wish we had gone to 21.

    Returning and looking for accommodation

We are returning in October and our previous accommodation has been booked out. I%26#39;m sorry now I recommended it to so many!

Any ideas of somewhere central for 2 adults and 2 children and another couple. Any apartments available? Any help would be appreciated.

    Returning and looking for accommodation

Where did you stay last time? How about Radio City Apartments?

    Returning and looking for accommodation

I stayed in Radio City Apartments. Loved it and recommended it to all. I tried booking today for next October/November and they are sold out! So I need to book soon to ensure we get something decent.

They may just not have gone on sale yet? Email them to find out - seems odd they%26#39;d be sold out already for oct/nov

I agree it%26#39;s unlikely the Radio City apts are sold out already for NEXT Oct. Probably their computer won%26#39;t take rezzies this far in advance. If that%26#39;s where you want to stay, email, phone etc.

The Salisbury is a similar type hotel, a bit closer to Central Park. Most rooms are suites/apts. The Buckinham is another. I%26#39;ve noticed quikbook.com often has better prices for the Salisbury than the Salisbury%26#39;s own website.

Also, there%26#39;s an English (I think) website www.apartments2book.com someone else posted about that has many apt/hotels and apts., often at better prices than the hotels themselves. The Beacon is a popular upper westside place and it%26#39;s #11 on the apartments2book website.

The Best Western Hospitality is another apt/hotel but on the east side. The Affinia 50 is another good one.

For a regular apt. (not a hotel) you might check with nyhabitat.com and citylightsnewyork.com, reliable apt. brokers. But remember, in a reg. apt. you don%26#39;t get daily maid service.

I rang Radio City and there seemed to be no problem booking for 2 rooms. I%26#39;ve asked them to confirm by email but they gave me confirmation numbers. I live in hope!

However it%26#39;s good to have other locations just in case!

  • Ruby Foo's for NYE in NYC

Hi my husband and I are flying to NY on Dec. 30th and at first thought of doing the Time Square deal, but after reading all the info here and there (incl. weather forecast) we%26#39;ve decided it may be better to go to a restaurant/hotel....trying to stay within our budget, we found Ruby Foo%26#39;s which was recommended by a friend. They are having a DJ, and nice meal (their menu is in their web site) and they let you go out for 15 min. at midnight to try to get near the ball drop and then come back to the restaurant. Any comments about this place? We would be paying $125 per person, and I don%26#39;t want to end up paying the same amount as in any other place, to then realized we could have gone to a nicer, trendier place...thanks! and Happy New Year

Ruby Foo's for NYE in NYC

Since we live two blocks from Times Square, my beloved and I always opt for a quiet night at home on New Year%26#39;s Eve, so I don%26#39;t know how the $125 tab at Ruby Foo%26#39;s measures up against other places, but it seems pretty reasonable.

The restaurant is very popular and it is fun, and it%26#39;s also one of the handful of Times Square places where New Yorkers actually go. All in all, it sounds like a swell bet for New Year%26#39;s Eve.

Ruby Foo's for NYE in NYC

Thank you, I guess if New Yorkers actually go there, it mus be good ... We just made our reservations...Hope it doesn%26#39;t rain...

My husband and I went on this in August of 2004. We thought it was great. The food was very good and the scenery is beautiful. You can%26#39;t beat a boat made of glass. I would recommend it.

  • a girly weekend in New York

Hi, I plan to go to New York at the end of April and am looking for cheapish accomodation but in an area where there are quite afew bars so we can go for a drink on the way home from sight-seeing. Has anyone got any ideas which area we should be looking to stay and any recommendations of hotels. We dont mind staying in the same room to keep prices down. This will be the second time I have been to New York and, you are going to think I%26#39;m mad, but last time I went it was impossible for me to find a pub that wasnt a hotel-based bar! Not that we are alchoholics or anything! I guess we are looking for an area that has a local feel but is relatively easy to get to the sights. Help!

a girly weekend in New York

Where did you stay last time you were here out of curiousity?

You don%26#39;t say how old your group is, how many there are or what you consider cheapish. It sounds like an apartment might be 1 idea. Nyhabitat.com and citylightsnewyork.com are 2 cos/websites that people have used successfully for apartments.

The West Eleventh st. Townhouse is in Greenwich Village and has rooms that are set up like apartments. Read reviews here.

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d526456-鈥?/a>

    Some other options:

stay on the upper westside, a nice residential area with good transport to midtown. The Beacon and the Milburn both have apt. like rooms. The Lucerne and the Excelsior also good in the area.

stay midtown on the east side, more residential than the Times Square area. The Beekman Towers hotel near the UN sometimes has specials/packages. They also have apt. suites. The Affinia 50 and the Kimberly are other apt/hotels in midtown east side that have apartments.

a girly weekend in New York

Yes, I do think you%26#39;re mad. You must have stayed in a three block radius in Times Square last time. Too bad.

Try the Upper West Side, the West Village, Murray Hill, etc.

Do some searching on this forum for good advice on these neighborhoods.

    Check Citysearch for more info:

    www.newyork.citysearch.com

Yeah you%26#39;re right we stayed just off Times Square I%26#39;m not complaining but just wouldnt stay that way again. We are in our thirties and need abit of everything really. Someone recommended Tribeca. Do you know anything about this area? We are hoping to not spend more than 250 dollars a night.

How about the Cosmopolitan Hotel? Check it out on Trip Advsisor Hotel reviews. It is inexpensive and no frills, but clean, neat and convenient.

I hope you intend to take the subway when you are here. You don%26#39;t have to walk or stay within walking distance of your hotel if you want to go to bars. You can go anywhere in the city, 24-7-365 on the subway. Drink up!

While Tribeca is trendy in spots, not a lot of hotel options and some streets are good, others not. Yes, the Cosmopolitan can be good. But I%26#39;d still suggest either the village or Chelsea or Union Square area or the upper west side.

What%26#39;s your hotel budget? Have a look on quikbook.com for hotels/good prices. With kids it might be a good idea to stay in an all suite hotel where the rooms have kitchens/kitchenettes for breakfast/snacks, take away. Lots of options depending on price.

    Quick draft - Itinary

I%26#39;m gonna decide on our evening itinery on the flight over! Its very rough but we%26#39;re young lads and aint really into museums etc.

29/12: Arrive Newark 1130am. Check-into hotel 2pm approx. Do WTC %26amp; St Pauls, check out Wall St. Shopping (A%26amp;F, Pier 17 %26amp; Century 21). Head out to Chinatown after a wee sleep for Chinese meal %26amp; then bars.

30/12: Head over to Times Square 11am. Take in Central Station %26amp; do ESB trip. Shopping (Macys, B%26amp;H, Armani Exchange etc).

31/12: Stroll round Battery Park %26amp; then head out on bar crawl after lunch. Booking tickets for Crobar niteclub after 12. Times Square %26amp; Bars before ball drop.

1/1: Maybe go to see NY Jets v Buffalo - depending on how bad hangover is. Do Brooklyn Bridge, Grimaldis Pizza %26amp; maybe SOL ferry.....

2/1: Top of the Rock. WWE at nite at Continental Arena. Bars in afternoon.

3/1: Central Park. Shopping (Bloomingdales). Maybe head to Harlem. Ice Hockey game at night at MSG

4/1: Fly home at 8pm. Spend day doing some shopping.

    Quick draft - Itinary

First day, the %26#39;wee sleep%26#39; before the Chinese dinner may turn out to be longer than you thought.

Remember you will have been awake almost 24 hours when you arrive in Newark.

Wire down, take it easy, as much of your %26#39;sightseeing%26#39; is in bars you%26#39;ll be more tired than most.

Do you have tickets for the Jets/Buffalo game, WWE or the hockey game at MSG?

They are usually sold out and you would have to buy from scalpers, ';touts'; which is a risk in itself as many of them counterfeit tickets via their laser printers.

Just take it easy, take time to see some of the outdoor sights and you%26#39;ll be OK.

Sounds like a rockin%26#39; good time!

Menupages.com is a good website for restaurants. Since the hotel is in the west 50s, pick that location and then type of food and go from there. Tons of choices including an outpost of Serafina, a good local pizza chain inside the hotel. You%26#39;re in spitting distance of Times Square and Central Park and the main shopping area on Fifth Ave. (and Rockefeller Center). The Time Warner building at Columbus Circle (sw corner of Central Park) has a big Whole Foods market inside if you%26#39;re looking for healthy and tastey food to eat in or take out. Also near your hotel is the famous Carnegie Deli. Some think the best pastrami in NYC.

    Our trip report-Dec. 18 for 3 nights

We arrived at Hyatt, Sunday at 9:30 AM. Was told when booking that we could get early check in. We weren%26#39;t able to check in until 5:45PM. Did a little complaining and was given breakfast vouchers for both mornings. This usually costs $25 per person. I would never have paid that for breakfast. It was a small concession I guess. We loved the hotel. It was very busy. This is where the strike negotiations were taking place. This day we went to Canal Street. Didn%26#39;t really care much for this. Same stores, same knockoffs. Went to see the Rockefeller tree and it was absolutely beautiful. Watched the musical snowflakes at Saks. Very nice. We started a conversation with a man who knew we were from the South. Could it be our accent??!! He said he wanted to find a Southern woman, s Southern Belle, and had been to Charleston. He didn%26#39;t find one there. He said he couldn%26#39;t find anything to eat after 10 PM in the South. We thought that was funny.

Monday we hailed taxis everywhere. Went to NY baking company and got sanding sugar, and edible glitter, and dragees. Ready for cookie making next year. Went to Doggie Do and Pussycats Too. Got some freshly baked goodies for my two Rotties, Max and Lucky. My neice went to live taping of TRL. Johnny Knoxville, Carmen Electra and somebody named Daddy Yankee were there. She enjoyed that very much. Also saw Hairspray this night. We all loved this.

Tuesday got very expensive. Because of the strike the taxis could charge whatever they wanted. We were so nieve. We wanted to take a taxi from the Hyatt to Bloomingdales. The driver wanted $10 per person !!(5 of us). We started walking. Didn%26#39;t go all the way to Bloomies because we stopped in so many stores along the way. We had to check out the Hyatt and go to the Beacon for our last night. Remember this is Day one of the strike. The best deal the bellman got for us was a limo. From the Hyatt to the Beacon, for the 5 of us---$80.00. Yes, $80.00. I know the Beacon gets good reviews, but I didn%26#39;t like it much. A little ragged, the doors all banged up and scratched. Narrow halls and low ceilings. No one helped us with our bags. From here we walked a little in Central Park. Stopped at a cafe for hot chocolate and dessert. The cold was bitter. We are not used to that.

Wednesday, because of the strike we were advised to leave early to be sure to get to the airport. The hotel arranged for transportation. We booked a private van, but ended up on a BUS with about 8 other people. That set us back $19 per person. A deal I guess compared to the limo ride. Got to the airport and guess what? Our plane had been downgraded in size, so they were offering people $200 in Delta dollars to take a different flight. We took advantage. We did have to go to Orlando to get to Columbia, SC, but we only got home an hour later. We can use those Delta dollars for our next trip. Next time we want to come in October maybe. We were there in extreme heat in August, and in extreme cold in December. But we already know we will want to return to NY again and again.

    Our trip report-Dec. 18 for 3 nights

Thanks for lovely trip report! Glad you made the best of bad situations, but you are a pro at that after your original Delta ticket snafu! (If I remember correctly...)

Glad you went to NY Baking Co. What are ';dragees';?

Feel free to chime in when others post questions about things you have done. Nothing like the wisdom of experience. Don%26#39;t forget to add your reviews of the hotels on the T.A. hotels page.

    Happy New Year!

    Our trip report-Dec. 18 for 3 nights

Sounds like you were all up to the challenge of the strike. Good thing you were able to get transport.

I don%26#39;t think the Hyatt and the Beacon are comparable. One%26#39;s a modern business class hotel, and the other is a budget tourist class hotel. You can%26#39;t expect even similar amenities. But did you get a chance to explore the upper west side?

What a lucky break to get those Delta dollars. It%26#39;ll certainly help with your next NY trip. October is usually nice here.

Wow. What a NY experience you had. Yes, after the Hyatt I%26#39;d imagine the Beacon would look a bit worn on the edges. Mid-late September is my favorite time in NYC. ;)

Dragees are the small edible candies that look like tiny silver or gold pellets.

And yes you all are right about comparing the Hyatt to the Beacon.

We didn%26#39;t get to explore UPS very much. We walked into the Time Warner Building, Urban Outfitters, and Filines Basement. This is the area we also stopped for hot chocolate and dessert, can%26#39;t remember the name of the place. We left the hotel at noon on Wed. to make sure we got to the airport on time, so we really didn%26#39;t have a lot of time.

One thing I was proud of doing, and it%26#39;s because of the info I got here, was when we hailed a taxi, and he rolled down the window and asked where we wanted to go. When I told him, he shook his head, said no and left. I was yelling ';you can%26#39;t do that!'; When the next taxi pulled up, he asked us where we needed to go. I said ';you%26#39;re not supposed to ask us that.'; He motioned for us to get in and off we went.

See? We%26#39;re getting the ';hang'; of things there.

just want to say about the taxi%26#39;s that what he wanted to charge you was correct for the strike time. It was on all the news reports that it would be $10 per person per zone, new york was divided into zones and taxi%26#39;s could pick up more than one passenger during that time.

He wasnt trying to con you.

Sorry you were in NYC during the transit strike but it sounds like you made the most of it. BTW, Daddy Yankee is a Puerto Rican performer. I forget what type of music he performs--it has a unique name. The local paper had a big article about him. Plus, when we were in town and rode the D train, his picture was in every car in a radio station ad.

sounds like a miserable time, i%26#39;m surprised you want to come back!

I%26#39;m guessing the music you%26#39;re referring to is reggaeton. It is rapping in Spanish to a reggae ';dance-hall'; or calypso backbeat.

P.S....those gold and silver thinigies are edible? Who knew!

where is the ny baking co we also want edible glitter for wedding cake thanks

    56 W. 22nd Street. Their website is nybake.com.

is this the right way round?

starting at mandarin oriental hotel we want to go to designer loft bridal shop 226 west 37st then to kleinfields bridal 110 west 20st shop back up to somewhere near the gershwin theatre for early dinner {suggestions welcome but not to much walking cos i cant walk far} then to see wicked how far in walking terms is theatre from mo hotel

    thanks

is this the right way round?

The MO is at 60th and Columbus Circle. That%26#39;s a minimum of 23 blocks downtown and I don%26#39;t know how many Ave%26#39;s across (what is the cross street for the designer loft bridal shop?). Maybe you should cab or subway it downtown and then walk from the first shop to the 2nd shop.

By the way..when did Kleinfelds move from Brooklyn? are you sure that address is not a Brooklyn address???

is this the right way round?

Hi again. I just looked up Kleinfelds on verizon.com. It is still listed on 5th Ave in Brooklyn, where its been for many years. Have they opened up another shop in the city? Its worth the trip to Brooklyn, but I%26#39;d just double check to make sure your information is correct.

I think you should take the A or C from Columbus Circle to 34th Street. Ride in the back of the train, and use the exit near the rear -- you will come out on Eighth Avenue at 35th Street. Walk two blocks north and turn right - your shop is on that block.

To get to 20th Street, you probably want a cab. (If you want to use the subway, walk to Seventh Avenue and down three blocks to 34th Street. Take the #1 to 18th Street. Walk two blocks north to 20th, and turn right - the shop is on that blcok.)

From the shop on 20th Street, walk to Seventh Avenue (the shop is between Sixth and Seventh, closer to Sixth) and turn left two blooks to 18th Street. At the station there, take the #1 train to 50th Street and Broadway. the theater is on 51st Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue.

our plans are to cab it down to designer loft bridal shop on 226 west 37st between 7th and 8th avenue then to kleinfields the web site says 110 west 20th street between 6th and 7 th avenue then back up to the gershwin theatre if kleinfields is in brooklyn i guess it would be best to go there first then back to other shop did try looking on map but i admit fairly hopeless on the score my daughter in law to be has her heart set on going to kleinfields for veil and other bits we will get cabs as much as possiable

Kleinfeld%26#39;s opened a store in Manhattan this year.

There are a few nice options for dinner around the theater. My favorites are ViceVersa, a sleek, posh Northern Italian. On the same block is a mid-priced Italian, Maria Pia. Also nearby is Thalia, a well regarded American. I%26#39;m not crazy about Thalia, but it%26#39;s very popular. You can read reviews and see sample menus on www.menupages.com.

In short, we loved NYC and had a great trip, despite being there during the strike. We had only 3 1/2 days, but did tons, and we all want to go back as soon as possible (one child is already certain she%26#39;ll try for college in NYC...)We liked our hotel, the Algonquin (see my separate review); get a discount internet or Travelocity rate. We went to some great, resonable restaurants (thanks to TripAdvisor advice!). Tourist things we did that everyone liked: the United Nations tour (fantastic, intelligent guide), the CNN studios tour, museums (loved the Russian art exhibit at the Guggenheim and the Met, of course!); walking around the Village and NYU area, Top of the Rock for the view, Altar Boyz and Star Wars Trilogy shows (kids loved them both; in laws only went to Altar Boyz, but loved it (they are Catholic so could definitely ';relat';); just walking around Times Square and mid-town....the crowds, the holiday ';excitement';; skating at Rockefellar center (worked well because in laws could sit in restaurant and watch kids skate, and we lucked out during the strike and only had a 20 minute wait...but Bryant Park would be a good bet if crowded, and it is more reasonable); the Lower East Side Tenement museum--very interesting, no child will ever complain about a small bedroom after seeing this museum; Central Park: Wow! Kids really understood the importance of parks and land conservation as they looked at the contrast of nature and man made architectural marvels. They loved visiting Toys R Us and FAO Schwarz(yep--even though they are teens--the pretense was shopping for our cousins), and got a kick out of street vendors and learned to ignore their pleas. Awed by Grand Central, loved the walking life, and generally all had a great trip. It is hilarious--since we%26#39;ve been back to our suburban home, my kids have walked to the closest small shopping center (about .7 miles, I%26#39;d say)several times..for Starbucks twice, and once to get a few things at the grocey store--they asked me if there was anything I needed! But the point is that the NYC visit gave them a taste, early in life, of what a lot of California kids don%26#39;t get (except those lucky enough to grow up in SF): there is an alternative to living life continually in your automobile!!!Anyway, we all want to go back soon. Maybe we will make Christmas in NYC a regular tradition!

Sounds wonderful, I am happy that you all had a great time and that you learned to love walking!!!! That is really the only way to really know NYC.

    See you again soon!

    Happy Holidays.

FYI, it is amazing that Central Park is manmade, isn%26#39;t it?

Wonderful report, Travelmom, although I%26#39;m exhausted just READING about everything you did in 3 1/2 days (with the transit strike yet).

How great that your kids got to stay in that most New York of all hotels, the Algonquin and to see the Tenememt Museum.

And it makes me smile that your daughter wants to go to school here. I decided the same thing when I was about 8, went to Columbia and have been here now for over 30 years.

    Please come back often!

Thanks for the sweet trip report! Sounds great!

Love the ';fascination'; with walking. Hope the novelty doesn%26#39;t wear off. Tell them New Yorkers have the best legs - for free! No health club or treadmill required!

I agree, travelmom--it%26#39;s nice to be able to ditch the car and walk to where you need to go! That%26#39;s one of the things I enjoy about visiting NYC. Sorry you were there during the transit strike but you all certainly made the most of it!

PontMarie - interesting that you went to Columbia and never left! The same thing is happening to a friend of mine. Her daughter is a senior at Columbia, and she has already told her mom that she doesn%26#39;t plan to come back to Columbus. She has fallen in love with the city and plans to make her home there after graduation.

    40th bday girls' getaway - - help please~

Hey-I%26#39;m planning a trip for myself and 2 friends to go to New York City to celebrate my 40th bday. None of us have been (can%26#39;t wait!) and want some input from some of you LADIES as to:

    1) best place to stay (walking distance to everywhere....)

    2) best shopping

    3) overall - - best iteneray (sp).

We%26#39;ll be there from Thursday afternoon - Monday morning/mid afternoon. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my head is SWIMMING!!!!!!!

Thank you! (oh - and waving on the Today show is a def. must!!)

    40th bday girls' getaway - - help please~

I really like staying in a suite if at all possible. There is more room, and most have refrigerators, if not full kitchens, which really come in handy. I know most people say that they%26#39;re not in New York to spend time in a hotel room anyway, but trust me - you will be so tired from all the walking that you may spend more time in your room than you think! Check into the Affinia properties (www.affinia.com), Radio City Apartments, the Salisbury, Best Western Hospitality House, the Blakely, and the Kimberly. As for your other questions, type in ';shopping'; or ';itinerary'; in the search box above and you%26#39;ll get loads of ideas!

    40th bday girls' getaway - - help please~

Wow, there is too much to put in one posting! We were there this summer and stayed at the Westin Times Square-really nice, depends on what you want to spend. Do your research and read the reviews too.

Shopping-I love China town! Nothing also beats a walk down 5th Ave.

We were there in Dec. and had makeovers at Saks. Just were walking through and the girls at the Dior counter called us over. We looked fabulous for the rest of the day and it was fun.

A great web site is NYCVISIT.com for research. Will give you alot of info.

    have a great time-happy birthday

';Best shopping'; depends on a few things --

Do you mean posh, elegant, expensive?

Do you mean name brands at a discount?

Do you mean really cheap knockoffs?

Do you mean unique things that you would not find at home in Virginia?

Are you talking only about women%26#39;s clothes, or are you thinking of other things?

Do you prefer Department stores, or small unique shops?

While I am a very unstylish middle-aged blue-collar guy who is no shopper at all, even I know that Madison Avenue and Orchard Street have very different appeal. I think that answering the questions above may help the really dedicated shoppers here focus on what you really want to know.

Myself and a couple girlfriends are planning a 4 day trip to NYC with a bunch of high school seniors this spring. Other than the typical attractions, does anyone have any advice on *must see* stuff for this age group. restaurants, tours, etc, This is for both boys and girls. We plan on a Yankees game, the hop on hop off bus tours etc. Any cool things to do would be appreciated. We will be staying at the new Courtyard on E 92nd. Thanks

    touring nyc with teenagers

I just want to say congrats to you and your friends for taking the seniors on this trip. My girlfriend and I took our daughters during their senior year vacation and we had a great time. Too many parents let their kids go off on these insane spring breaks with no chaperones...but that is my soapbox and I%26#39;ll end it there. :) Planning a trip with teens is a bit different and I understand your wanting to make it special for them. Some suggestions I can give from what my kids enjoyed are: NBC Studio tour, chinatown, maybe some time at the MET and Central Park, walking up 5th Ave. and Trump Tower for those who watch ';The Apprentice';, Ellen%26#39;s Stardust diner has singing waiters.....walking thru SoHo (you could hop off there for a few hours on your bus tour). Make sure to spend an evening in Times Square with all the lights. Girls would enjoy Sephora, guys ESPN Zone, lots of souvenier shops for inexpensive gifts, MTV is there. Maybe you could try to get them tickets to be on the MTV Show, ';TRL';. Take the Staten Island ferry, which is free, past the Statue of Liberty for a better view and avoid the long lines to go directly to the island. There is so much to do, and I am sure they will love it.

LAST CALL!!!!! suggestions of a restaurant in ny ??

HI!!!! For the last time i want to know the name of a good restaurant, not expensive, clean ... Italien, thai , or other... For the new years eve ;-)))) thanks

LAST CALL!!!!! suggestions of a restaurant in ny ??

Okay for the last time, I%26#39;ll respond--Trattoria Trecolori.

I%26#39;ll also add: John%26#39;s Pizzeria for pizza, and ViceVersa for lovely food.

For more info about these, check out trattoriatrecolori.com and menupages.com.

In all seriousness, have fun, ok?

LAST CALL!!!!! suggestions of a restaurant in ny ??

A couple of places you may want to look into; I don%26#39;t know if they%26#39;re open NYE:

    1. La Gioconda, on East 53rd between 2nd and 3rd. They are in menupages, and I think also have a website. I think the Zagat rating for food is about 20-22. Very reasonably priced, compared to other Italians, although don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s in your budget.

    2. Lasagna Ristorante, corner of 2nd Av. and 50th St. Guess what their specialty is? But I think they have other things (haven%26#39;t eaten at this one). I think this is probably less expensive than the one above. Don%26#39;t think they%26#39;re in menupages or have a website, but they probably have a phone. This is a classic, simple, checkered tablecloth type of place, informal, but not as informal as places like Bella Napoli.

    3. Notaro, on 3rd Av. near 34th, which another poster has been recommending and which also gets a good food rating in Zagat. This is in the same price range as La Gioconda.

    4. In the same general area as La Gioconda %26amp; Lasagna (2nd Av. in the 50s), there are several other reasonably priced places and bars. There is a Thai restaurant, Phuket, between 50 and 51.

Sorry, Notaro is actually on 2nd av. near 34th.

    http://www.notaroristorante.com/

    They are also in menupages.

And I just learned that La Gioconda (www.lagiocondany.com) is under the same management as La Giara (www.lagiara.com), a cute little place on Third Av. between 33rd and 34th. That particular block of Third Av. has several other reasonably priced places.

Sorry Montrealtraveler, didn%26#39;t know you had checked it out. Bonne chance with the other rec%26#39;s and Bon Appetit!

    www.yelp.com/biz/80wCGDpDgKwozAcgKXwohA

If you paste the above in your browser, you will be connected to the only webpage I could find that has a reference to Mimi%26#39;s, an Italian place on 2nd Av at about 53rd street. I think the guy who wrote this gives a pretty good description. This is another inexpensive checked tablecloth place, but with a piano bar. I think his description of the food and service is probably accurate. I couldn%26#39;t find it on menupages.

Gosh, I forgot about Mimi%26#39;s. Here%26#39;s some info

    http://newyork.citysearch.com/review/7158391

Certainly not fancy, but a NY experience. They should have a piano player for NYE.

It also reminded me, did I ever suggest Trio? Closer to your hotel, inexpensive, live piano. Nice.

    New Years Eve

As a new member to the site ive just been doing a little browsing and have started to get very worried about the fact im in new york from 11pm on the 29th till jan the 5th and havent got a clue where to eat for new years eve!!! I really dont think i want to go to times square, although our hotel is in that area.

ideally i%26#39;d like to be able to have a decent meal with my boyfriend at a semi decent restuarant and then be able to see the new year in in a nice bar where the alcohol will flow.

Any suggestions that are viable at this late notice would be really appreciated!

    thanks

    vicky

    New Years Eve

You might check out Au Coin Du Feu, a french restaurant, on Lafayette and Spring Streets. I was there tonight and the owner mentioned that the restaurant is doing a special ';prix fixe'; menu; I believe there is still room available. It is a small, cozy restaruant. For a nice bar, there seem to be several in that area. Good luck!

Drinks on Sunday before dinnner - West 50's area

Any suggestions where to stop for a drink before an early Sunday evening dinner (6:00 pm reservation)? We%26#39;re all from New York (Westchester), so we%26#39;re very familiar with the city, but want to have a special drink with special friends...maybe a place with a view or just a really warm place...thanks.

Drinks on Sunday before dinnner - West 50's area

With a 6pm reservation, it sounds like you need something really close. Would help to know where you%26#39;re eating. The Sea Grill or the Rock Ctr. Cafe with views onto the ice rink come to mind for a drink. Morrells wine bar is also in Rock. Ctr (5th %26amp; 49/50 st).

    Other possibilities are

Pentop bar in the Peninsula Hotel

King Cole Bar in the St. Regis

If you%26#39;ll be further north/west, the Library bar in the Hudson hotel is supposed to be very nice.

Ofcourse, the lobby lounge of the Mandarin Oriental (Columbus Circle) has fantastic views).

Drinks on Sunday before dinnner - West 50's area

I don%26#39;t know how west you mean, but I took a look in Citysearch and found this place. I%26#39;ve never been, but it sounds nice:

    Sortie

    329 W 51st St

    New York, NY 10019

    (212) 265-0650

Cross Street: Between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue

    Directions: C, E to 50th Street

    鈥itysearch.com/profile/鈥ortie.html

    http://www.sortieny.com/flash.html

No view and it%26#39;s in the West 40s, but the lobby of the Algonquin is a cozy, warm place for a drink, as is the little Algonquin bar, which I think is (or was) called the Blue Bar.

THALIA at 50th and Eighth is a perfect place for a late afternoon drink. Where%26#39;s dinner? In Theatre District? Elsewhere?

Thanks for the responses - we%26#39;re dining at Patsy%26#39;s on West 56th for those who asked where we%26#39;re dining.

I think at that hour on a Sunday you probably need to stick to a hotel bar. The Peninsula Pentop bar is on 55 st just off Fifth Ave.

Maybe bar at Blakely Hotel (or its restaurant) on West 55th Street (blakelynewyork.com) or perhaps bar at Petrossian on West 58th at 7th (petrossian.com).

Also, any of the hotels along Central Pork South (59th Street) -- like Essex House, Ritz Carlton, etc.

I suggest Sortie on West 51 Street

Beside great drinks and great music (DJ on some nights) they also have a good divers menu. Staff there is really nice

  • Shopping in NYC - 5th Ave vs Outlet Villages

    Hi All

I am visitng NYC over new year for the first time. Although I plan to do the 5th ave shopping experience, I have heard about some outlet villages about 1hr outside nyc that offer very good bargains. Can anyone give me any advive as to whether they are worth the trip.

I am also looking to for a new suit, so any recommendations here will also be appreciated.

    Thanks very much in advance.

Shopping in NYC - 5th Ave vs Outlet Villages

If you love shopping, or that%26#39;s the main reason you%26#39;re coming, maybe consider one of the outlet malls. Woodbury Commons does have a number of high end designer stores like Gucci, Chanel, but it%26#39;s over an hour away and the bus costs $35 roundtrip (or take a cheaper bus but spend the entire day there). Have a look at their website and see if the stores they have interest you. You should be able to find everything you want, especially at this time of year in Manhattan.

For a suit, depends on how much you want to spend, what style etc. All the stores should be having sales and with the great exchange rate for you, you could probably get something wonderful at Saks Fifth Ave. or Barneys-both high end dept stores. If you%26#39;re looking for a bargain, some discount places are

    %26gt;Sym%26#39;s (2 locations),

%26gt;Men%26#39;s Warehouse (Madison Ave. %26amp; about 45 st--this is a stretch of Madison Ave. with lots of men%26#39;s stores)

    %26gt;Rothman%26#39;s

Shopping in NYC - 5th Ave vs Outlet Villages

If you are coming right now, (within the next 2 weeks) you need not schlep all the way to Woodbury, since the sales are in full swing and you can score some major deals.

As for suiting, you can%26#39;t go wrong with Brooks Brothers, whether you want to spend $300 or $3000 Brooks will have something for you.

Btw, assuming you%26#39;re male. The places I listed for a suit are men only except for

Syms which carries men %26amp; women. I also neglected mentioning Century 21 which is a discount dept. store. You either love it or hate it. Very crazy place. Not my thing.

Macy%26#39;s has a very large selection of name brand men%26#39;s casual clothes. Foreign visitors can get an extra 11% discount by registering at their customer service desk. They also will have suits, maybe on sale. Bloomingdales has the same offer to visitors. Lord %26amp; Taylor is a another nice dept store. I%26#39;ve gotten nice men%26#39;s shirts, sweaters etc. there but never looked at their selection of suits.

For after Christmas sales 5th Avenue should do you fine.

For a good suit, try Barney%26#39;s 7th Avenue and 17th Street - they also are having sales.

As for the out of town outlets, never thought them to be a %26#39;great%26#39; bargain, in my opinion.

    Barney%26#39;s isn%26#39;t on 17th and 7th anymore. :-( It%26#39;s on 60th and Madison. (17th st is a CO-OP..not good for suits.)

cb - thanks for the update, just remembering the %26#39;old%26#39; Barney%26#39;s.

Sorry for any inconvenience to anyone..

actually yearly sales of barneys occur in the warehouse at 17 st still. i think they%26#39;re in feb though. they have really good discounts for like 3 day sale.

just go to saks and bergdorf on 5ave - at this time you can get up to 75% discount there. it does not get better!. there%26#39;s some edgier younger discount closings stuff in cent.21, very unpredictable though -that%26#39;s downtown across from wtc site, close to brooks brothers, if you go there.

Thanks Very Much to everyone for their comments.

I think I will stay in manhattan for the sales and save myself the journey. I now have plenty of options for suit hunting.

    Invaluable advice, thanks again.

    Oooooooo...brooks brothers.........Mmmmmmmm.....

Beacon Hotel or Milburn in NYC?

Considering staying at one of these hotels on Upper West Side. I understand Beacon may be dearer but can anyone compare the two ? Would be two adults , no children. Thanks for your help.

Beacon Hotel or Milburn in NYC?

They%26#39;re very similar and about a block away from each other. Both have large rooms, most with kitchenettes. Both are reported to be a bit frayed around the edges. I once read someone who%26#39;d stayed at both actually preferred the Milburn. In fact, at the bottom of the first page of reviews here

    tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60763-d1219鈥?/a>

there%26#39;s someone who says the Beacon was full so they picked the Milburn and won%26#39;t be going back to the Beacon. I%26#39;d say maybe the only major difference is the Beacon is ON Broadway, a big wide busy street and the Milburn faces 76 st, a side street. So the Milburn may be a bit quieter, especially if you face the front.

If you don%26#39;t need a kitchen, you might want to also compare the Excelsior and the Lucerne, both in the same neighborhood.

    The Oak Room Replacement

Tradition for a visit to NYC is to have an overpriced drink at the Oak Bar in The Plaza. Since I hear The Plaza is under renovation, please suggest another 5 star hotel bar for our drink this weekend.

    Thanks

    The Oak Room Replacement

Easy - the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis!!

    The Oak Room Replacement

Here are my substitutes - in fact, here are the places I%26#39;d go to before the Oak Bar anyday ;-)

    1. Bemelmans Bar, in the Carlyle Hotel, 35 E. 76th St., at Madison Avenue

    2. Mark%26#39;s Bar, in the Mark, 25 E. 77th St., at Madison Avenue

    3. Oak Room at the Algonquin, in the Algonquin Hotel, 59 W. 44th St., between Fifth and Sixth avenues

Agree with all of the above for the same sort of feel. Could add some other thoughts but not necessary. For something totally different and new, go to the lobby lounge of the Mandarin Oriental on the 35th floor of the Time Warner building. Pow and wow.
