Quick advice please - Subway tickets

2 of us fly tomorrow - be over for 6 nights and cant wait!

Re subway passes - do you get a combined subway/bus pass for the 7 days?

I read before that its a good idea to buy a 7 day subway pass for approx 25usd...does that cover buses also?

Ta

Quick advice please - Subway tickets

It is confusing. The 7 day pass (called a metrocard) is unlimited use of subways and buses for 7 days. Can only be used by 1 person at a time. There%26#39;s also a 1 day version of this. YOu can also get a ';pay as you go'; metrocard. Read more about it here

www.mta.nyc.ny.us/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm

Most tourists feel the 7 day card is great but you should also realize so much of what you%26#39;ll want to see is midtown, within a walk. If you plan on doing a lot of clubbing, many of those are downtown though.

The %26#39;whiz%26#39; is spot on about MertoCards. I prefer the pay as you go; these are issued in specific dollar amounts and can be recharged if you run out, they also can be used by more than one person, ie; swipe it twice for two people taking a ride.

I think this would be better if you are concentrating on midtown sights.

Poppa

7 day metrocard for $24. Can be used on nyc subway and regular buses. Not good on PATH subway, express buses, or the AirTrain at the JFK or Newark.

You can%26#39;t use it at the same station or on the same bus line within 18 minutes of your last use, but that is never a problem.

check out the mta website for more info: www.mta.info

Staying down at Battery Park if that helps....

Would it be the NYC Subway or Path that we%26#39;d be using to travel to all the sites etc?

staying down at battery park

no need to use PATH unless you are planning on going over to NJ

you can use the pay-per-ride Metrocards on PATH now www.panynj.gov/path/quickcard.htm

Since you%26#39;re staying downtown, and plan to explore Manhattan and go crazy-nutty-cookoo, buy the $24 unlimited 7-day MetroCard. Wooo! You can use it as many times as you want, on subways and buses, 24-7-365!! The only thing limiting you is your stamina.

(Remember - you can%26#39;t share the unlimited card. If you were able to share an unlimited card, and had a big group of folks using it, you could bring down the cost of a subway ride to less than one penny per ride!!!)

Sometimes that ';18 minute'; delay rule does pose a problem, especially for the inexperienced or ';un-co-ordintated';. ;o)

For example, let%26#39;s say there%26#39;s a group of tourists standing at the turnstile, and they are supposed to all wait until their ';leader'; determines whether this is the correct line to use. INEVITABLY, someone in the group will wander off in a haze or over-confident swagger, not pay attention, and swipe through the turnstile to the WRONG LINE. Chaos ensues: ';Where%26#39;s Joe? What! He paid the fare already! Argh, we%26#39;re supposed to go to a different line!'; Joe exits back to the group, with shame and indignance.

Now, when everyone goes to the correct turnstile, Joe has to wait 18 minutes until he can join his posse. The group then has to rush eating dinner and barely makes it to the play for curtain time! Everyone hates Joe until next day%26#39;s happy hour. Plus, his friends won%26#39;t let him live it down, especially when they get back home to tell stories.
