Mount Royal Hotel Hostel - decent or not?

My husband and I are spending 4 nights in NY as part of a trip across the USA taht we%26#39;re doing in Aug-Sept 2006. The accomodation in NY is so expensive, that we%26#39;re considering the hostel-style lodgings, but with rooms with private bathrooms. I have read the reviews of the Mount Royal Hotel which seem very mixed. We can accept %26#39;basic%26#39; accomodation given the price, but are the rooms clean and quiet and is the location handy %26amp; safe? Also, do they have mini-fridges in the rooms? Thanks!

Mount Royal Hotel Hostel - decent or not?

Based on the reviews posted here including headlines like ';worst hotel ever'; and ';dirty and disgusting'; I can%26#39;t imagine why you%26#39;d consider this. The Hostel International (HI) seems to be the preferred hostel in Manhattan but I%26#39;m not sure it has private rooms. There are two ';Y';s (YMCAs) that have private rooms that get not bad reviwews, the Westside Y and the Vanderbilt Y. Both are listed here. hostelz.com is another website to check for hostels and reviews.

There are also several b %26amp; bs and hotels, some with shared bath facilities that get good reviews. Second Home on Second is a

b %26amp; b with both ensuite and shared bath options.

Finally, there are some apartment options that might meet your budget. citylightsnewyork.com has a ';hosted'; apartment program where you stay in someone%26#39;s apartment but get your own bedroom and sometimes bathroom for I think about the same price as a private room in a hostel.

newyork.craigslist.com is a website where people list vacation rentals (among other things) and rooms to let. Just realize there is no way to know for sure what sort of experience you%26#39;ll have doing it that way.

At that time of year, make sure wherever you stay has air conditioning. It can still be very hot. If you can manage up to $120/night, you might want to make a reservation that%26#39;s cancellable and consider bidding for a room on Priceline. People are often able to stay at top hotels like the NY Hilton or the Grand Hyatt for $100-120/night plus tax (remember none of our prices here include tax). If you%26#39;re not familiar with Priceline, you absolutely should get to be as it could yield you wonderful hotel rooms on a cross country trip. Betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com

are websites that explain the bidding ins and outs. Betterbidding is a bit friendlier but both give good information and advice and will even help you strategize a bid.

The only thing good about the Mount Royal is its neighborhood on the Upper West Side. You may want to look at the Newton which is a short distance from the Mount Royal, is much, much better and has some less expensive rooms that have shared baths.

The Newton Hotel is on the Upper West side on Broadway and 95th Street. It gets good reviews, especially for value. It is in a safe residential neighborhood with close by shops and good moderately priced restaurants. It is one block from the subway which can get you to midtown in 10 minutes and most anywhere in Manhattan in 30 minutes.
