My retired husband and myself will be visiting New York in April for the first time - for 4 days.
We would like to take some tours and also wanted to know if there were any tours to NY City from Long Island where we will be staying.
Would also like info on the best way to get to the tours etc.
City Tours
I doubt there are since you generally have to get yourself into Manhattan to get onto the many many different tours. Also though, Long Island is a very huge place so please be more specific as to where you%26#39;ll be for better info.
City Tours
From end to end, Long Island is 120 miles long. It includes four counties and a population of 7.4 million people, which is more than the population found in 39 of the 50 states. Thus, to say ';Long Island'; is rather like saying you are staying in ';Georgia';: it would be helpful to know what town you will be in!
Much of Long Island (and by the way, both Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island) is served by the Long Island Rail Road (yes, Rail Road is two words), which can take you into Manhattan easily and relatively cheaply. Most visitors staying on Long Island would travel into Manhattan and then visit according to their own itineraries.
I will not say that there is no such thing as a formal ';tour'; of New York City that originates in Nassau or Suffolk counties, but the idea strikes me as strange and uncommon.
There are dozens and dozens of tours. For general tours, Grayline hop on/off, NY Party Shuttle and Marvelouse Manhattan tours are some that people have enjoyed.
Bigonion.com is another co. that does more specialized tours that also get good reviews. The Municipal Art Society does some wonderful architecture/historical tours. There are also some great free tours--everything from the lower east side to Central Park, Wall St. and Central Park. So, tell us where you%26#39;re staying and what sort of tours you%26#39;d like to do. Also, be aware some of the free/specialized tours are only given on certain days/times.
Call the Super 8 hotel in North Bergen,NJ.Ask the name of the tour that goes into NYC and other places.Sorry forgot the name of the company. The bus picked us up in front of the hotel for all day tour. The tour included Central Park,Grand Central station, ferry ride to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island-got off bus 3 times to walk about.I believe it was $49 per person.Others on the bus were picked up at other hotels.Maybe this will help.
I don%26#39;t know about tours from Long Island, but there are plenty of tours available once you get into the city. The thing to be mindful of is weather conditions and your personal tolerance of discomfort. The sightseeing bus tours are terrific - but I wouldn%26#39;t do an open top bus this time of year (and the view from the lower deck of the double decker buses isn%26#39;t great.) Walking tours are also terrific- but think about how much you want to walk around if it%26#39;s really cold and windy. I would recommend a bus tour - but only from a coach bus, so you could see the sights and be warm and toasty at the same time. Have a great trip!
If you don%26#39;t want to walk, take the bus tours offered by Grayline or NY Party Shuttle. Good overview of Manhattan and other boroughs.
All other tours mentioned are walking tours.

As was mentioned, walking tours are plentiful and very interesting. They have a smaller focus on a neighborhood or theme - haunted places, radical activism, food and cuisines, women%26#39;s history, Broadway and theatre, etc.
Where on Long Island are you staying?
We are staying in Babylon and will probably leave daily for tours.
I highly recommend the Marvelous Manhattan Tour.

This tour is a smaller group of about 26 and the tour guide is very outgoing, humorous and knowledgable about NYC history. You get a great overview of Manhattan, including UES and UWS and Harlem. He makes stops at various attractions for picture taking and closer looks. One of the best tours I%26#39;ve ever been on!
Here is a link to the Long Island Railroad schedule for Babylon to NYC. It takes anywhere from an hour to 1 1/2 for the trip depending on time of day. The train leaves you at Penn Station (34 st %26amp; 7th ave.) and many of the tours start in the Times Square area which is a short 10 minute walk from there. The station is very near Macy%26#39;s.
Sorry, forgot the link!!
